About 2022 Ford Explorer

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Ford Explorer will be a carryover model with no changes. This means it will come with the same trim options which do include the Timberline, Platinum, and King Ranch, and will offer the same powertrains and interior as the 2021 model year. The popular ST model will also continue to the new year along with the hybrid offering, for those who seek a more eco-friendly model. The 2022 Explorer has an expected release date of Fall 2021 with an expected price of $33,250.

With a multitude of changes rolling in, the 2022 Ford Explorer now starts off at an MSRP of $33,245. Aside from introducing a new Explorer ST-Line trim, Ford also brings about changes in the form of a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen system and a 400 hp turbo V6 with the Explorer Platinum and King Ranch. The Explorer XLT gets a new seat trim, while the Timberline variant now comes with a standard second-row bench option.

Coming to the performance front, the full-size 2022 Explorer is powered by a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder unit, whereas a 3.3L V6 powers the Explorer hybrid variant. Available in AWD setup too, the base trims and the V6-powered 2022 Ford Explorer ST will be available with rear-wheel drive as standard. The interior of the 2022 Ford Explorer remains the same, with ample space for 7 passengers. The Co-Pilot 360 Assist driver-assist features are standard on the models of the 2022 Ford Explorer this year onwards.

The XLT is a proper step-up from the base trim but has all the necessary features of the higher trims as well. It adds a lot of generously nice features and the option of adding the Co-Pilot 360+ to add parking sensors all around, surround-view camera, lane centering system and adaptive cruise control.

Buying Advice

The 2022 Ford Explorer XLT trim is a proper step-up from the base trim but has all the features of the higher trims as well. It adds a lot of generously nice features and the option of adding the Co-Pilot 360+ to add parking sensors all around, surround-view camera, lane centering system, and adaptive cruise control. So for the price of MSRP $36,145, it is the one to go for from the Explorer lineup.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The lineup's three powertrains offer a commendable blend of capability, performance, and efficiency. - MotorTrend

The 2022 Ford Explorer carries forward its two engine options from the 2021 model year. The first is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-4 engine which makes 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque and is found in the base, XLT, Timberline, and Limited trims. The newly added Explorer ST-Line comes with various appearance and technology upgrades but features the same base engine configuration. The 3.0L Ecoboost V6 on the ST model makes 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. The transmission for both engines of the 2022 Ford Explorer is a 10-speed automatic that directs all the power to the rear wheels.

The Timberline trim also gets better off-road struts and rear shocks with a limited-slip rear axle, allowing it to have better control off-road. The 2022 Ford Explorer can finish the 0-60 mph sprint in 6.8-seconds with the RWD and 6.2 seconds when equipped with AWD. The 2022 Explorer completes the standing quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph. The Explorer ST, on the other hand, does the same 0-60 MPH sprint in just 5.3 seconds.
