About 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3.6

Overall Rating

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an aggressive-looking premium SUV that will give you a proper feel of power and luxury inside out. Equipped with a powerful 290 hp 3.6L V6 with 4WD and an 8-speed automatic, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a top mid-size family SUV to buy. This $37,390 ultimate ride offers a towing capacity of 6,200 lbs, and is well-equipped with a long list of creature comforts within its practical and usable interior.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets a complete revamp and follows in line with Jeep's newly motivated exterior design language. Prices for the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts from $37,390 for the base Laredo trim and tops out at $63,265 for the fully-loaded Summit Reserve trim with 4WD. Taking inspiration from the newly launched Grand Wagoneer and the newly introduced three-row 2021 Grand Cherokee L trim, the 2022 Grand Cherokee combines impressive off-road and on-road competence.

The Grand Cherokee is offered in a total of 7 trims with the powerful 3.6L V6 and a humongous 5.7L Hemi V8 leading its power duties. The 2022 MY gets RWD as standard with the V6 engine, whereas there are different 4WD options for the V8 engine. The new Cherokee carries the same interior features as last year but gets a redesigned interior that offers a premium feel and also gets better quality materials for this new-generation Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee SUV faces competition from the Kia Telluride, GMC Acadia, and the Nissan Pathfinder.

We recommend the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk trim. It is not only an adventure ride but also a practical daily driver with its powerful V8 engine. For $50,275, you get creature comforts like heated front and second row seats with leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and 18-inch wheels with a power liftgate. Add to that the Quadra-Trac II 4WD System, Quadra-Lift AIr suspension, heavy-duty engine cooling, underbody skid plates, a 7,200 lbs towing capacity, and all-terrain drive modes, and it is a perfect value for money option for anyone out there.

Buying Advice

The base Laredo trim offers a ton of standard features but we still recommend the Attitude trim as it offers some creature comforts like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start, power liftgate, wireless charging, and leather upholstery. You can add a power sunroof for $1,095.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

"Engines range from a modest V6 to a 707-horsepower Hellcat supercharged V8." Edmunds.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee's powertrains will remain the same as that of the 2021 Grand Cherokee. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine is standard, making 290 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. The powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 makes 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque on the Grand Cherokee's Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims. A standard 8-speed automatic transmission and RWD are provided on all trims for 2022. 4WD is optional across all trims, but standard on the Trailhawk on the Summit Reserve trims. The base engine lacks punch, whereas the V8 is an absolute roar.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee is now more than ever capable of taking the unbeaten path, with a ton of standard off-road features, including a rear electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), Quadra-Lift air suspension, as well select-speed control with hill ascent control. Suspension duties are taken care of by a short and long arm at the front and a multi-link at the rear. Jeep offers three levels of 4x4 systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. The Grand Cherokee comes with Selec-Terrain system's five terrain modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand. Also, every Grand Cherokee 4x4 is front-axle disconnected, which basically shifts the car back in RWD if 4WD is not required.

The new Cherokee now includes the Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension, which features semi-active electronic damping. This system automatically adjusts the shock tuning according to the road conditions. The Grand Cherokee's handling and steering parameters are majorly affected by its weight, and some improvements on that front are in the works. The 2021 model was heavy and lazy around turns, with body roll limiting available potential. The steering does not offer much feedback, and the handling feels vague. The Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,200 lbs as standard, and has a payload capacity of 1,180 lbs. The 5.7L V8 Grand Cherokees can tow up to 7,200 lbs.

The Pathfinder is the most affordable car in the lot, and is around $3,900 cheaper than the Jeep. Except for the Grand Cherokee, all come with FWD as standard. The Acadia has the quickest 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds, thanks to its powerful 310 hp engine. The Grand Cherokee gets the most towing capacity among the four. Considering usability, performance, and pricing, the Kia Telluride is the one that stands out as the one to choose.

Fuel Economy
5.5/10

"With the base V6 and the eight-speed automatic, the Grand Cherokee is good for 21 mpg in combined city/highway." -Edmunds

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is not known to be a fuel-efficient engine. Therefore, the fuel economy of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is not worth praising. According to the EPA, it returns 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. These ratings apply to the 4WD models as well.

The above ratings are quite low by segment standards. The 5.7L Hemi returns even lower figures at 14 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined. A fuel capacity of 23 gallons converts into a decent combined range of 506 miles for the V6 and 391 miles for the V8.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the most efficient car in the lot. The Chevy Blazer also returns the same combined mileage but a slightly large fuel tank translates for more driving range. The Ford Edge's fuel economy is also better than the Grand Cherokee but the latter is the best tourer as it delivers the most range in this competition.

Interior
7.5/10

"A thoroughly modernized cabin will step in to replace the Grand Cherokee's somewhat dated interior." - Car and Driver

For the 2022 Grand Cherokee's interior, we expect it to follow the same suit as that of the 2021 Wagoneer concept. Most of the creature comforts seen on the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be carried over on the 2022 model. Cabin quality was decent on the 2021 model, and this will be improved with higher quality materials and a more grand interior. The Grand Cherokee is a 5-seater. Headroom and legroom are immense in the Cherokee, with an excellent driving position on offer.

The control layout is very logical with easy reach. The seats offer a range of adjustability to accommodate all types of drivers. Despite the tall seating, visibility through the cabin is decent by segment standards. The infotainment unit features an 8.4-inch touchscreen with a 10.1-inch screen on higher models. The car gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability as standard, apart from the standard 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster, customizable interior LED lighting, and a rotary shift knob similar to the one seen in the Grand Wagoneer concept.

The infotainment unit is easy to use due to the large knobs, and touch responses are quick. However, the interface feels slightly outdated. Among the competition, the Pathfinder has a 3-inch longer legroom than the Grand Cherokee in the front row. In the second row, the Telluride's legroom is around 4 inches longer than the Grand Cherokee's. As a three-row SUV, the Telluride also offers the most cargo space among these four at 21 cu-ft. However, the Jeep has a cargo capacity of 37.7 cu-ft. The Telluride is the one to pick in terms of interior space.

Some interior features seen on the Cherokee are:

  • Keyless ignition and entry
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • 115-Volt power output
  • 506-watt nine-speaker Alpine system
  • Navigation

Exterior
6.0/10

The new 2022 Grand Cherokee bears a strong resemblance upfront to the Grand Wagoneer concept. The corner vents in the fascia are smaller, but all the lighting in this SUV is LED which gives a much more premium appearance. The seven-slot grille is there but that too has been made bigger. The Trailhawk trim gets a restyled front bumper and red tow hooks. This model also gets unique wheels and tires.

Coming to the side profile, it is almost 4 inches longer while its wheelbase is about 2 inches longer than the previous generation. Narrow taillights wrap around high on the Grand Cherokee's backside but don't stretch across the hatch as it does on the Wagoneer concept. The lower fascia, however, will be remarkably similar to the Grand Wagoneer. Trapezoid exhaust outlets are prominent as well.

The Hyundai Santa Fe has the shortest wheelbase in this competition, though it does not compromise on interior space. Instead, the Santa Fe burns out quickly while accelerating. The Chevy Blazer sits quite low to the ground at 7.4 inches, which is not bad. The short length of the Ford Edge can assist in its easy maneuverability. Some other exterior features are:

  • 18-inch/20-inch wheels
  • Single-pane/Dual-pane Sunroof
  • Chrome grille
  • Underbody skid plates
  • LED headlights & taillights
  • LED DRLs
  • LED fog lamps

Safety
8.8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has not yet been safety tested by NHTSA yet. However, IIHS rated it and gave average ratings for the class. It gave 'Good' ratings in most categories but also gave a 'Marginal' rating in the front driver-side test and a 'Poor' rating in the front passenger-side test.

With the level-two autonomous driving system, a variety of advanced safety features will be offered on the Grand Cherokee. Most of them are standard and some of them join the list as you go higher on the trim table. The Grand Cherokee also includes a suite of seven airbags for occupant protection. Some other features are:

  • Active driving assist
  • Intersection collision alert
  • Night Vision
  • Surround-view camera
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Drowsy driver detection
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic protection
  • Rear parking camera with parking assist
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane departure warning
  • Perpendicular parking assist

Competition

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2022 Chevrolet Blazer

Introduced three years ago, the Chevy Blazer is known for its Camaro-inspired styling. It costs nearly 4 grand less than the Grand Cherokee. Although the engines are less powerful, they offer spirited acceleration and good fuel economy. However, its main drawbacks are average rear-seat comfort and underwhelming cargo space. The extra bucks on the Grand Cherokee seem worth it due to its unmatching towing capacity.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2022 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is another affordable American rival of the Grand Cherokee. It has a meager towing capacity but offers livelier acceleration and good fuel economy. It is one of the spacious SUVs in its class and also benefits from more cargo space and a long list of standard features. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee has better off-roading equipment and an array of powerful engines with excellent towing capacity.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

The engine lineup of the Hyundai Santa Fe is less powerful than the Grand Cherokee but it delivers satisfying acceleration and great gas mileage. It has an upscale cabin and offers more cargo space. Also, there are loads of standard tech and safety features. The Grand Cherokee offers excellent off-road capability and smooth ride quality. On top of that, its 7,500-pound towing capacity is just outstanding.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a midsize SUV packs in a ton of appeal. It's among the better half of the off-road capable SUVs and offers a lot of appeal with its Trailhawk trim. The base V6 is not as impressive as the V8, and upgrading is a must. A sturdy built, logical and usable interiors, decent cargo space, and impressive safety features make the Grand Cherokee a top recommendation from us in the mid-size SUV category.
