"The Grand Wagoneer leaves the line with authority, accompanied by pleasing engine and exhaust noises." -Edmunds
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses a 6.4L naturally aspirated V8 engine under its hood, which has been borrowed from the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Compared to the one on the SRT, this powertrain makes 4 hp lesser at 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. This comes hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission that puts all the power to the wheels via Jeep's Quadra-Drive II 4WD drivetrain. With a towing capacity of 9,850 lbs, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer doubles back as a luxury hauler as well.
The Grand Wagoneer's engine is well-suited for a car that weighs nearly 6,000 lbs. Power delivery is smooth and linear, and the eight-speed automatic gearbox is precise and shifts are lag-free. This SUV also comes with Jeep's Selec-Terrain system with a 2-speed on-demand transfer case, and a limited-slip electronic rear differential Despite the weight of luxurious 3-row interiors, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer rides composed and planted.
The Quadra-Lift Air suspension with semi-active damping is the main reason behind the Jeep's ride quality, limited only by its pick-up truck roots. Handling on the Grand Wagoneer is decent, and body rolls are well controlled. The electric-assisted steering is light but does require some effort at higher speeds and around corners. With the powerful V8 setup, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer can go from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Compared to its star-studded adversaries, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer towers among the top 3 in terms of power. Also, it has a segment-leading towing capacity of 9,850 lbs. The Jeep also sprints quicker than the rivals to the 0-60 MPH mark, followed by the BMW and the Escalade. The X7 is the most affordable car in this comparison, and also offers the best value proposition against the other three.
"The automatic fuel-saving cylinder deactivation goes unnoticed." - KBB
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer's SRT-sourced V8 engine is a gas-guzzler of all sorts. Even though this engine comes with an automatic cylinder deactivation system for helping with better economies, it does not do much good overall. EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings for the Grand Wagoneer stand at 13 MPG in the city, 18 MPG on the highway, and 15 MPG combined. The Jeep's fuel tank capacity of 26.5 gallons translates to a combined driving range of 397.5 miles on a full tank.

Compared to the others, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer is a pure gas guzzler and hence is in the last place in this regard. The BMW X7 is the most efficient car in the lot, with a combined mileage of 21 MPG. The Lincoln Navigator comes in second, followed by the Caddy. The Escalade, however, benefits in terms of available range with its massive 28.3 gallons tank that gives it a maximum range of 566 miles.
"The Grand Wagoneer provides large families an opportunity to live the Jeep lifestyle." - Car and Driver
The interior of the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is attractive and is adorned with the right mix of different luxury materials. Aluminum, wood, and onyx glass accents line the dash area completely, with excellent levels of fit and finish. The layout on the inside is clean and logically placed. A two-spoke steering wheel reminds one of the original Grand Wagoneer, and there are visual differences in the interior between trims. The Series I trim has very limited use of leather on the inside, limited to the seats and armrests, whereas the Series II and III trims get Palermo leather on seats, door and instrument panels, and the dash.
As standard, the Grand Wagoneer seats up to 7 passengers, whereas the second-row captain seats can be replaced with a bench for more passenger capacity. Creature comforts such as four-zone climate control, 24-way adjustable front seats, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front, and rear seats, increase the existing appeal inside the Grand Wagoneer. Ingress and egress on the Jeep are easy, thanks to the wide-opening doors and the low seat height. Also, visibility is good on average, however, the rear pillars do restrict some view.Â

The four cars come close in their interior specifications. At the front, the Escalade offers the most headroom and legroom, whereas in the second row the Wagoneer has the best headroom and legroom. The Grand Wagoneer's third-row might seem less on paper, but it offers better thigh support and a tall headroom. In terms of cargo capacity as well, Jeep takes the lead with its 27.4 cubic feet of cargo area. Despite the available space, all four cars offer captain chairs and adjustability in the second row, have well-cushioned seats with excellent support and bolstering.
The Grand Wagoneer gets close to 45 inches of total infotainment system screen just at the front. That includes a 12.0-inch infotainment screen with Stellantis' Uconnect 5 software, a 10-inch lower touchscreen solely dedicated to climate and seat controls, and a 10.3 front passenger screen for entertainment purposes. A rear-seat entertainment system adds two more 10.1-inch rear entertainment screens with Amazon Fire TV. The UI of the infotainment system is a tried and tested system that is quite easy to use. Few interior features on the Grand Wagoneer include:
"The Wagoneer sports a new take on traditional Jeep design with cues from the original." - The Car Connection
One look at the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and you might not see one bit of resemblance to the original nameplate. The reborn iteration is worlds apart as the 2022 Grand Wagoneer now sits much higher at 10.1-inches above the ground. Borrowing its dimensions from the 2021 RAM 1500, the ride is quite wide and intimidating, to say the least. That being said, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer does strike a chord in terms of style.
From LED headlamps and the 7-slot grille to the air vents, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer is packed with surprises from top to bottom. Riding high on 22-inch wheels, it resembles a truck from afar. A suave truck at that. Move towards the back, and it seems reminiscent of the Lincoln Navigator due to the continuous LED strip running between the taillamps. But, what it does impart is a massive road presence.

The Wagoneer's proportions are massive, but the Escalade is even larger. It's 12.3 inches longer than the Wagoneer, while weighing 555 lbs less. The Wagoneer has the most height and width that has helped with more consistent interior space. Its 10.1-inch tall ground clearance also gives it a slight edge while off-roading. The Escalade again has the most wheelbase at 134.1 inches. Against all, the BMW X7 is the most compact car, which is evident in its third row. Some exterior features are:
Being totally new models, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer are yet to reach NHTSA and IIHS for crash tests. Hence, the safety ratings for the ride are not available for now. However, with a High Strength Steel Safety Cage construction, the brand has high hopes that the ride will get 5-star safety ratings in the tests.
That being said, Jeep has left no stone unturned and fitted the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a horde of safety tech. As many as 120 safety features come as standard fitment, which includes active and passive safety tech, driver assistance tech, and other standard safety features. Some of the most notable ones are:
The 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV is a direct rival to the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Both the SUVs offer a powerful engine with relaxed driving dynamics, lots of standard features and high-tech features, and a gorgeous interior with loads of space. Both the SUVs also have the same negatives as well: they're expensive and large. The Escalade does however offer better fuel economy, whereas the Grand Wagoneer is more modern and impressive.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator is a strong rival to the Grand Cherokee. Both these full-size luxury SUVs offer a large and comfortable interior with seating for 7 or 8 people, decent ride quality, a powerful engine, lots of standard features, and user-friendly infotainment systems. The Jeep has better handling, more cargo space, and tons of safety equipment. The Navigator has better mileage, and the L version offers more space on the inside than the Grand Cherokee.
With a starting cost of $86,995, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer enters the market rather well-equipped in its all-new form. The excellent styling, proportionate looks, and classy and spacious interior do an excellent job aesthetically, whereas the feature-rich trims, advanced technical features with tons of screens all around give the Grand Cherokee a very sophisticated approach. The powerful V8 engine with decent handling capabilities, a plush ride, and the 10,000 lbs towing capacity add points to its positives, and its mechanical setup keeps it off-road ready 24x7. All in all, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer packs in a lot of potential, and is surely buying as the next full-size luxury SUV.
