Belonging to a lineage of SUVs, Land Rover as a brand has perfected its offerings over the years.
Belonging to a lineage of SUVs, Land Rover as a brand has perfected its offerings over the years. While the Range Rover stands to be the most inspiring choice in the lineup, the less popular Discovery holds abundant value and could be a niche SUV, considering the price and performance it has to offer. As the moniker suggests, the Discovery is one SUV that could be the perfect companion on untrodden surfaces and in untoward conditions, and yet be the most comfortable hauler you could get your hands on.
Keeping in mind its price, feature list, and performance potential, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery S will satiate all your needs, and hence, it is our recommendation. We do not suggest jumping onto higher trims as they are not excessively luxuriant, however, if you are a performance fanatic, the R-Dynamic trim will be a viable option.

The 2022 Land Rover Discovery is an all-encompassing SUV lineup that comes in two distinct variants, which include the base S trim and R-Dynamic SUV. However, for the purpose of this review, we would focus on the base variant only. This is because, the R-Dynamic SUV, is mechanically different under the hood, and consequently, we review it separately.
The Land Rover Discovery S stands as the entry-level variant in the SUV’s lineup and bears a price sticker of $56,600, a considerable leap from yesteryear. However, apart from the jump in prices, the SUV remains unchanged. It still comes with a 2.0L P300 inline-4 unit under the hood and also sees no change in its feature list. It comes equipped with a Pivi Pro Infotainment system to start with, and also gets heated and power-adjustable front seats alongside 20-inch alloy wheels as standard.

However, if exclusivity is the name of the game for you, the special Metropolitan Edition feels crafted for you. It gets a higher outputting P360 engine that uses a mild-hybrid assist to power the performance. It also gets added features at its disposal including 22-inch alloy wheels, heads-up display, and four-zone climate control. But it does bear a higher price tag than the base trim, but a final confirmation regarding price is yet to be received.

For a refined SUV that can haul families and reeks on refinement within the city limits, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery does a brilliant job. It comes equipped with a 2.0L inline-4 unit that is good for 296 hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque and gets mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which shifts slickly. It makes use of a 4-wheel-drive system that works in tandem with an electronic suspension system and Terrain response to make the ride easy over undulations and per as impressively even during off-roading.
However, when compared to the rivals, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery is sluggish and slow-moving. And its acceleration timings are evidence of the fact. It takes 6.7 seconds to the 60mph mark and can breach the quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds. It gets an electronically limited speed of 130 MPH. But for a vehicle that is meant to be the perfect partner for your grocery runs and business meetings, the Discovery is supremely practical. Though you would long for some extra feedback from the steering system, the handling capabilities are top-notch.

Every other SUV in the segment makes use of a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and an AWD configuration. But the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE Class bears distinction with its 9-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that improves both performance and efficiency. However, despite producing 362 hp and 369 lb.-ft of torque, the Mercedes-Benz SUV falls short of the Audi Q7, which is the quickest in the segment. It takes 5 seconds to reach the 60mph mark and shares the spot with the BMW X5 of being the leader in the quarter-mile run as well.
Being recently introduced for 2022, the Land Rover Discovery has not yet been rated by EPA, and hence, it is difficult to make a judgment on its fuel efficiency. However, with no changes to the powertrain from the outgoing model, we believe that the mileage numbers from 2021 will still hold relevance. 2021 MY of the Discovery averaged 19/22/21 MPG in city/highway/combined conditions. While the efficiency might seem a tad bit lesser than the rivals, its fuel tank of 23.8-gallons is the largest in the segment and allows the SUV to cover around 500 miles.

Again, it is the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class’s mild-hybrid system that leads the segment and gains ascendancy over its competitors with a combined mileage of 23 MPG and a range of just over 500 miles. Even the BMW X5 is extremely frugal and despite the smallest fuel tank, it manages a class-competing range. And while you might find the Q7 to be a bit low on efficiency, its performance in no way can be deemed as disappointing.
To deem the cabin of the new Land Rover Discovery as luxurious as its rivals would be an understatement. The interiors reek of a palatial aura and the Light Oyster Morzine headliner being available as standard is evidence of how ostentatious they actually are. Step inside the cabin of the Discovery and you find the finest attention to detail at every nook and corner. There are premium quality materials all around and not even one plastic or hard surface throughout. The seats get covered in Ebony-grained leather and even the dashboard and door panels make use of a similar upholstery. In terms of gadgets and gizmos, Discovery’s interior feels rewarding. From its exhaustive list of standard features, we feel that the availability of a wireless charging pad, three-zone climate control, and the Pivi Pro infotainment system are the most noticeable inclusions.
As for comfort, the Land Rover Discovery would have been better off as a two-row SUV in our opinion. The third row lacks adequate space and is best suited for kids or cargo only. However, if you are seated in the front or middle row seats, you would find yourself in ultimate luxury and leisure. There is ample space at the disposal of each passenger and with a heightened roofline, even taller passengers will remain comfortable on longer journeys. The sunroof adds to the airiness inside the cabin and the power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front seats, make the cabin a niche place.

As far as infotainment goes, the Pivi Pro infotainment system, which you would also find in the Jaguar is extremely potent. However, it might lag at times, which could be frustrating for some. Rest assured, the system is impressive, and with a standard list of features that include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch Interactive Driver display, the Discovery never feels underequipped.
In comparison with the competitors, the German rivals bestow an equal level of luxury inside the cabin. Leather upholstery seems to be a staple inclusion across the segment and so is a premium sound system. The interior setups feel defined, but the cargo capacities do differ significantly. Both the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Class come with two-row configurations and get cargo capacities in excess of 33 cubic feet. On the other hand, the Land Rover and Audi lack considerably in the aspect, but for larger families, the third row could be a practical proposition.
Some standout interior features include:
Compared to the Range Rover Sport or the Evoque, the Discovery might not have an athletic and young aura, yet the SUV manages to impress buyers with its people-pleasing nature. While we feel it looks tantalizing and invigorating, critics have their own opinions about the design. But we feel that the Land Rover looks well-rounded. It gets a brawny and muscular design with free-flowing lines and curves, which are representative of its off-roading capabilities. It sits on a set of 20-inch all-terrain tires, which help improve its performance and reimpose a proportionate stance. The front grille might not be the largest or the most aggressive, it complements well the headlights and active air intake shutters on the bumper below. At the side and rear as well, the LR remains impressive with its wide taillamps and contains its dimensions rather well.

All three adversaries of the 2022 Land Rover Discovery have been recently updated or revamped and there is no doubt that all of them look enticing. Which SUV amongst the pack you would choose is a completely subjective choice, but the difference in dimensions does help ease the decision. The 2021 BMW X5 has the maximum space on offer on the inside, thanks to its longest wheelbase of 122.5 inches. It also sports the best-in-class ground clearance of 8.5 inches and we feel that it makes for a family hauler and is followed by the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Class in terms of dimensions. However, the Merc is the heaviest option in the segment that weighs around 5,000 lbs and is only heavier than the Land Rover Discovery, which weighs 4,865 lbs, yet is the most compact option.
Some of the salient exterior features include:
The new Land Rover Discovery continues to be made on the brand’s LR-MS platform, which it shares with the Range Rover Evoque. While being structurally sound and sturdy, the platform of the Discovery is specifically built for off-roading. While the SUV has not yet been tested by the NHTSA and IIHS, we believe that its comprehensive safety suite makes the SUV more appetizing. As standard, it comes equipped with features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Emergency Braking Assist.
Some other standout safety features include:
In an ultra-competitive segment, the BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery set standards for the competitors to match up to. While the X5 is specifically built to cohesively unify performance with luxury, the Discovery S is the refined alternative for a family of seven and whether you opt for the two-row or three-row SUV, you would never regret your decision. However, to declare a certain winner amongst the two, we feel that the statistics are enough. The BMW X5 is the quicker option and manages similar efficiency as the LR. But the Discovery’s practicality, off-roading capability, and three-row configuration make it a pragmatic proposition. And even with its lower cargo capacity, we’d choose it over its German counterpart, credit to its lower price tag.
The 2022 Audi Q7 is an embodiment of German craftsmanship and the bespoke engineering that goes into building the SUV is representative of the performance it delivers. While its engine might not be the most powerful in the segment, it delivers class-leading performance and emerges as the quickest option. However, in every other aspect, the Land Rover Discovery is the better and more practical option. Being seven-seat SUVs, the LR and Audi are the largest options in the segment. But the British SUV moves streets ahead of its German counterpart by being more frugal, having better space for the third-row occupants, and also bearing a lower price tag. It is more technologically advanced and we feel that at around $57,000, the Discovery will leave you brimming.
The only 2021 MY in comparison here, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class, is a true superstar that you would definitely be in awe of. It gets a potent engine at its disposal and is the quicker option amongst the two here. Additionally, thanks to its mild-hybrid assist system, the Merc emerges as the most efficient option available in the segment. It gets the best cargo capacity and even with two rows, it feels supremely commodious. With the latest redesign, it now looks uber-luxurious and with its ergonomic setup and intuitive infotainment system, we’d not mind paying some extra thousand dollars on the German SUV.
In a bid to make Discovery the best SUV in the segment, Land Rover has coalesced abundant capabilities into the vehicle. It’s a formidable machine that is as good at off-roading as it is within the city limits. Its agile handling and engaging driving dynamics are sure to impress the buyers and with an efficient powertrain under its hood, the Land Rover Discovery seems to be a niche vehicle specifically curated for your family. However, it’s not all a bright picture. The Land Rover Discovery has lower space in the rear seats as compared to its rivals and also has substandard cargo capacity. But given its levels of comfort, premium build quality, and lower MSRP than all of its rivals, we feel that the Land Rover Discovery might just be the perfect vehicle for you.
