2022 Land Rover Range Rover Review

Revamped from ground up, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover hits the track with 2 powertrain configurations and two wheelbase variants in 3 inspiring trims for a starting price at $104,000.

After an inspiring redesign, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover will be blazing down the lane with its all-new 523 hp 4.4L V8 alongside the 395 hp 3.0L I-6 mild hybrid powertrain. Ramping in three configurations of SE, Autobiography, and First Edition, it will thrill the enthusiast with its updated styling, enhanced safety, and improved dynamics for a base price tag of $104,000.

Available in two wheelbases along with 4,5, and 7-seater formats, the Range Rover challenges the ponies of other luxuries including the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class, BMW X7, and Cadillac Escalade. However, it is not alone in its quest as the 518 hp Range Rover Autobiography at $147,400 and 395 hp Range Rover Westminster at $105,600 also dash beside this premium drive.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

"The Land Rover Range Rover continues to offer a unique blend of capability mixed with cutting-edge design and modern technology." - True Car

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover comes in 3 trims that begin with the SE configuration at $104,000. It features Meridian Sound System, Pivi Pro, and Ebony perforated Windsor leather upholstery as its interior divines. It can also be availed of with a 7-seater arrangement costing an even higher expense of $110,000. But it is that Electronic Air Suspension with Dynamic Response that stays the same in both editions.

The Autobiography, with a base MSRP of $152,000, plants all the formats, be it either standard or long wheelbase or 7-seating layout. It even casts 11.4-inch Rear Seat Entertainment and 24-way heated, cooled, & massaging front seats on the inside. The last one in the queue is the First Edition for a $158,200 investment that arrives with bigger 23-inch alloy wheels and a more refined Perlino perforated Semi-Aniline leatherette.

Buying Advice

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Long Wheelbase is the one we recommend. Being the mid-range model, this trim offers an array of sought-after luxury features that are a miss on the SE trim including the enhanced climate control, seats, corresponding seating surface, musical system, and whatnot. At the same time, all these assets appear to be enough for any individual refraining from going for the range-topping model.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"For such a big guy, the Range Rover is surprisingly nimble." - Motor Trend

Discontinued with the former base 355 hp 3.0L I-6, the 2022 Land Rover Range now juices the pleasure by its 3.0L twin-turbo I6 mild hybrid powertrain. Stirring a 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque in the chambers, its I-6 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission in a standard AWD layout. Along with that, cometh a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine too that kicks in 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. But it is offered as standard for Autobiography and First Edition only, the SE sports it an extra $14,700.

Though boxy and masculine in build, the Land Rover Range Rover feels light on off-road with its All Terrain Progress Control that enhances the traction dynamics by miles. And the cornering comes as no surprise as the Adaptive Dynamics 2 tunes the suspension geometry and damping electronically, resulting in exceptional stability. To further poise that stance, it inherits all wheel steering in balance with torque vectoring that makes its maneuvering more lively especially on rain soaked and mud stain tracks.

Spirited with a 0-60 MPH drag of 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 150 MPH, the base 3.0L I-6 hybrid of the Range Rover sets you up for an athletic instinct. Its soul gets more jaunt with its 4.4L Twin-Turbo V-8 inside the belly that is 1.1 seconds quicker in 0-60 MPH and has got 5 MPH higher top speed. Meanwhile, to pedal that boost, one asks for power braking that's on the mercy by its inherent Electronic Brake Distribution, 4-wheel ventilated ABS, and Cornering Brake Control.

Since all of them have been bestowed with over 300 hp, so performance thump is certain to confront but the Range Rover could do it 0.4 seconds faster than the GLS Class. However, it does cost $29,000 more than the latter too which seems to be justified considering a power gap of 60 hp at the same time. Even the Escalade struggles the same way as that of the GLS but it is overwhelmed by 30 MPH as well while speeding to the limits on the straight against the Land Rover.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

"The big Range Rover is hardly thrifty, though some versions are somewhat frugal." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover returns a decent combined fuel economy of 20 MPG. And with its 23.78-gallon fuel tank, it has an appetite of up to 545 miles of range that, in general, comes around 474 miles on average.

Capable of offering a 90-mile better range than the Escalade, much of the credit goes to the 4 MPG better fuel efficiency of the Land Rover Range Rover. It has also got an edge by some 14 miles when compared to the X7 due to its 2-gallon bigger tank.

Interior
9.0/10

" The 2022 Range Rover's high-end interior and first-class curb appeal are designed to attract wealthy, white-collar buyers." - Car And Driver

The interior of the 5th-gen 2022 Land Rover Range Rover in Ebony furnish is simply a vogue with its Natural Brown Walnut veneer and Ebony perforated Windsor leatherette for the SE trim. The contrast is further intensified when those SV Bespoke carpets are fashioned under the Semi-Aniline leathered seats in the Autobiography variant. However, that awestruck fine finish only welcomes you when the Perlino interior trim finds its way in the First Edition space.

Exemplary in its virtue, the Land Rover Range Rover honors your time spent inside it with heated seating in both rows for the base SE. While the Autobiography upgrades with added massage and cooling functions for the front row. There are Executive class comfort Plus rear seats as well for you to stretch your limbs in the First Edition with the practicality of cargo capacity ranging from 40.7 cu-ft to 83.5 cu-ft, being the same throughout.

The 2022 Range Rover has been crafted to seat up to 7 people in the long wheelbase format for the SE and Autobiography, thereby, equalizing with its other rivals. Nonetheless, it has a 32.2 cu-ft smaller cargo volume than the Escalade behind the 2nd row. On the other hand, the X7 feels a little cramped in the rear with its 3-inch smaller legroom. Apart from that, the Pivi Pro claims to make an impact as its standard infotainment system.

The 13.1-inch touchscreen is fused on the dashboard with Meridian Sound System for jabbing you with your favorite artist's top song charter. Moreover, from Autobiography onwards, an 11.4-inch rear entertainment display is integrated exclusively for the backbenchers. The head-up display has the same storyline as that of the rear entertainment display while the navigation unit remains consistent all across the lineup.

  • Power adjustable heated, cooled, and massaging front seats

  • Perforated Windsor leather upholstery
  • Four-zone climate control

Exterior
4.0/10

"Against the progressive design of the last-generation Range Rover, the new SUV’s look offers a more subtle advance from nearly every angle." - Motor Authority

Refreshing and refined with all-new curves, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover radiates a combative richness through its MLA-Flex platform. The Premium LED headlights with signature DRL portray aggression on its front fascia while beaming for a long range. And a 33-exterior color finish including the Fuji White, Santorini Black, and many more on offer chills its level of customization and sophistication.

As a real power buster on 21-inch, 22-inch, and 23-inch alloy wheels, the Land Rover Range Rover sheriffs its bolder presence. Moreover, the panoramic sliding moonroof, privacy glass and solar attenuating windshields all around the cabin shade the exterior paint job throughout the silhouette with their darker backgrounds. It also pounds that LED taillight alongside the powered gesture tailgate in the rear that seems as clean as its build.

Being 13-inch smaller than the Cadillac Escalade with a 3-inch wheelbase gap, the Range Rover appears to unfold the reason for its lower cargo volume behind the rear seats. In terms of easy off-roading for the platform, the Range Rover boasts superiority over the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class with its 0.7-inch higher ground clearance. Some of the notable exterior features have been mentioned below:

  • 21-inch, 22-inch, and 23-inch alloy wheels
  • Premium LED headlights
  • Signature DRL
  • Panoramic sliding moonroof
  • Privacy glass
  • Solar attenuating windshields

Safety
9.0/10

"It boasts a lengthy list of luxury, safety, and high-tech features." - J.D Power

When it comes to safety, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover hasn’t been crash-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet and will never be as per its premium stand. That being said, the Range Rover comes loaded with a decent level of safety features and assists to keep the vehicle and its occupants safe. Although the visibility from the inside is amazing still a backup camera with parking sensors is available for a better experience. Some other safety features include:

  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Forward collision mitigation system
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • High-speed emergency braking system
  • Adaptive cruise control

Competition
5.0/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class

Though $25,000 more expensive than the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is more grilling but quiet at the same time with better performance figures and curve. Its power lead is further reinforced with a parallel range coverage indicating a much more balanced powertrain under the hood. The spaciousness and touch are somewhat desirable in both luxuries. So, one should go for Range Rover despite its higher price tag.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2022 BMW X7

As enriching as the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover in ambiance design for a relatively cheaper price range, the 2022 BMW X7 lacks the power surge like its rival. Be it acceleration or top speed bound, the Range Rover easily outclasses the X7 with a superior range reach. The tech-ends and safety suite, meanwhile, remain at par with each other. So, one can consider Range Rover even if it asks for more investment.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2022 Cadillac Escalade

Easily a space demon on the inside, the 2022 Cadillac Escalade is one rival in the market that can get the 2022 Land Rover Range rover when it is a matter of cargo volume and seating ease. However, that edge easily overturns, the moment you step inside and floor the Range Rover as it has got far better performance dynamics and range practicality along with impressive safety gears and build. On the whole, the Land Rover seems more fulfilling in its virtue than the Escalade.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is, without a doubt, a melange of all luxury, off-road, and power performance. All the facets are right on top that justify its comparatively higher expense than the counterparts in the space. The convenience techs and interior infotainment are also impressive in their functionalities. Therefore, there seems no reason not to put it in our pick.
