About 2022 Lexus ES 350

3.9

Overall Rating

Human evolution is one of the most fascinating events in history, but for the purist, the progression of engines, the heart of the automobile is a better topic to chat on.

Human evolution is one of the most fascinating events in history, but for the purist, the progression of engines, the heart of the automobile is a better topic to chat on. Yet some automakers, nameplates in particular love to flaunt less advanced tech; it is still more lovable like naturally aspirated V-blocks. Some garden-fresh revealed cars still feature these high-revving, naturally aspirated engines, which are melody to ears. The 2022 Lexus ES 350 is one such example, that is techier, more elegant yet continues with the same powertrain details, the 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 engine. Besides the V6, the ES 350 features a bigger and updated touchscreen.

The Luxury trim serves as a perfect middle ground with all the essential and lavish creature comforts. It also gets a wide range of safety features too.

2022 Lexus ES 350 Review

Pros

  • Serene ride quality
  • Upscale and premium interior
  • Excellent performance

Cons

  • Front-wheel-drive only
  • Not as sharp and fun-to-drive as some European rivals

Human evolution is one of the most fascinating events in history, but for the purist, the progression of engines, the heart of the automobile is a better topic to chat on.

Overview

Pricing and Features
8.5/10

The 2022 Lexus 350 comes with various updates, but the three trim offering remains unchanged. The base trim starts at an even 40 grand, while the buyers can upgrade to Luxury trim for $45,200. The base Lexus ES 350 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, simulated leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, 8-inch infotainment system display, touchpad infotainment system controller, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and a 10-speaker audio system.

There’s also an optional Premium package, choosing which the Lexus ES 350 features automatic wipers, driver-seat memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 continues to be powered by a potent and brawny 3.5L Naturally aspirated V6 under the hood that produces 302-hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mashed with an 8-speed automatic gearbox; however, the ES 350 remains a strict front-wheel-drive sedan. The engine revs up to 6,600 rpm, yet is incredibly smooth and refined in terms of power delivery.

The transmission does an excellent job with seamless and quick shifts. On the flip side, the front-wheel-drive takes away any chances of sporty driving dynamics. Hence the ES 350 is a highway machine, best for long routes. This Lexus midsize sedan is racy from its heart, shooting off the line, from zero to 60-mph in 6.1-seconds while a quarter-mile is covered in 14.6-seconds.

*2021 MY data used for reference

The Lexus ES 350 offers the most power, but unfortunately, that doesn’t translate to being the quickest. The Infiniti Q50, which is the most affordable midsize sedan on the list, is the quickest off the line and offers rear-wheel drive for being more dramatic and fun. The same goes with Genesis G80. At last, the Acura TLX, with a puny 2.0L engine, in comparison to the rivals, punches out the least attractive numbers.

How well does the 2022 Lexus ES 350 handle?

The V6 on the 2022 Lexus ES 350 is refined and ultra-smooth with the linear power delivery and grunt reserved at low revs. The transmission, too, works incredibly with the engine, but it’s the front-wheel-drive system that makes the ES 350 dull and gloomy. No, it’s not slow or sluggish, but it limits the ES 350 to a luxury cruiser.

The suspension setting is towards a softer side, as the midsize luxury sedan is primarily focused on driver and passenger comfort. The handling and steering are precise, even around the corners. There’s a high amount of grip, yet there’s inevitable understeer that follows. Unlike European rivals like the BMW 5 Series or Audi A6, the 2022 Lexus ES 350 isn’t sharp or playful. But its super-smooth and serene ride quality are impeccable.

Braking Performance

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 receives no changes to the braking setup, hence it would feature the same 12.0-inch discs in the front and 11.1-inch discs in the rear. Together, the all-wheel disc brake setup generates ample braking power to bring the midsize luxury sedan to a complete halt in 110-ft when cruising at 60-mph speed. Besides, the Lexus sedan offers various advanced driver-assist like forward collision mitigation where the system warns the driver of an impending collision and applies brakes in certain scenarios.

Both the Infiniti Q50 and Lexus ES 350 lock horns with the same braking distance while the lightest Acura TLX stretches a tad bit more, 118-ft to be exact to complete to a complete halt. Genesis G80 has the largest set of brakes in the competition but the heavy curb weight does affect its braking performance.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 continues with the same powertrain, hence the fuel economy remains unchanged as the previous model year. With EPA-estimated 22/32/26 mpg for the city/highway/combined driving cycles, this Lexus midsize sedan remains an impressive budget luxury that also delivers impressive efficiency. The ES 350 sedan features a 15.9-gallon fuel tank that stores enough fuel to last for 400 combined miles under generous driving conditions.

The front-wheel-drive does make the ES 350 a more efficient car, but rivals like Acura TLX and Genesis G80 present more desirable fuel economy, which takes a dig on performance, comfort, or opulence. Infiniti Q50 has the largest fuel tank in the lot and that puts its driving range close to 600 miles on the highway.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2022 Lexus ES 350’s interior is subtle, serene with high-quality materials on the key points inside the cabin. There’s open-pore wood, aluminum accents, and more garnishing to make it look opulent and premium. The seating capacity is five, and there’s ample room to fit all these people without much of a fuss. The front seats are worth shouting dibs; with impressive bolstering and shape, the seats prove to be comfortable and supportive. Even the rear space is spacious, there’d be no complaints about limited headroom or legroom whatsoever.

The cabin is refined with soft-touch materials, simulated leather upholstery, and rich flavor with simple open-pore wood. There are various creature comforts to treat the occupants like ambient lighting, power-operated seats, heating, and ventilating function, dual climate control, and more. The ES 350 offers a 16.7 cu-ft of cargo space, which is remarkably spacious when you look into other rivals in the class. Though the rear seats don’t fold, the wide and big cargo opening gives room for bigger luggage bags.

The 2022 ES 350 is opulent and sumptuous but the Genesis G80 is more fascinating. In the rivals, each of the sedans offers a spacious and roomy cabin, but the Lexus sedan gets an edge with a bigger boot and better headroom and legroom in the rear section.

Standout interior features:

  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Rear side-window sunshades

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 gets a big and much-needed change when it comes to infotainment. Replacing the smaller, outdated screen, the ES 350 fits an 8-inch touchscreen display on the dash center. Now, the driver and front passenger can skip over the fussy laptop-style touchpad to access the screen.

Buyers can also opt for an optional, larger 12.3-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard along with a 10-speaker sound system with Amazon Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Scout GPS Link navigation.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Scout GPS Link
  • Lexus 10-speaker premium sound system
  • Satellite Radio
  • Navigation
  • Sirius XM Radio
  • Wireless charger
  • Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto
  • Lexus Enform Wi-Fi

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 doesn’t get massive changes on the exterior, but the revised styling brings tweaked headlamps, grille, and wheel designs. The sleek and angular headlights and the hourglass-shaped spindle grille look pretty much the same, but sharp eyes can easily differentiate. The grille design has been refreshed to give it a sportier appearance.

The side silhouette looks dashing and elegant as in the previous model year. And the rear section is the best design part, as it gives the luxury cruisers a sportier and aggressive appearance. The 2022 ES 350 adds and deletes some color options, along with new wheel designs.

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 is the most handsome amongst the rivals, but some would find the Genesis G80 more appealing and it’s debatable. Overall, the sleek and charming attire of the ES 350 is a fresh breath to the familiar European design.

Standout exterior features:

  • Chrome tip exhaust
  • Black w/chrome surround grille
  • 17" alloy wheels
  • LED headlamps and taillamps
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Power moonroof

Safety
9.0/10

The Lexus ES 350 still boasts top-notch safety tech and a firm and robust framework that shields the occupants in case of an unfortunate event. Both the NHTSA and IIHS have tagged the 2021 ES 350 as a first-class safety rating and the same will be continued since there are no changes to the underpinnings and design.

Standout safety features:

  • Lexus Safety System+
  • Electronic stability and Traction control
  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning with lane keep assist
  • Road sign recognition
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Head-up display

Competition

2022 Lexus ES 350 vs 2021 Infiniti Q50

The Infiniti Q50 is much more capable, thrilling, and fun to drive, but it doesn’t feel as premium as the ES 350. The ES 350 is more comfortable and relaxing. It all melts down to the buyer as to whether they’d prefer having the sportiness of the Q50 or the comfort and premium ES 350. But then if you ask us we would prefer the 3L twin turbo V6 motor on the Q50 over the Lexus.

2022 Lexus ES 350 vs 2022 Acura TLX

Both the front-wheel-drive midsize luxury sedans are budget-friendly luxuries of their respective parent brand. While the Acura might feel slightly outdated and boring, the ES 350 is more comfortable, spacious, and charming. We would go for the TLX Type-S variant which is in a whole other league if you are considering the Acura. The ES 350 on the other hand looks stunning in comparison to the TLX.

2022 Lexus ES 350 vs 2022 Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 is a hot rival to the ES 350 in terms of styling, interior comfort and opulence, and also tech. Both are neck and neck, though the Genesis is less powerful, the rear-wheel-drive system opens the room to be a track maniac. G80 also offers oodles of luxury and creature comforts similar to the Lexus but it all boils down to the engine preference. Picking the G80 would be a wise choice.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Lexus ES 350 brings awaited updates to the infotainment, interior, and exterior. With tweaked attire, the ES 350 grabs more attention, while the interiors have been refined by removing gimmicks and replaced by subtle yet upscale materials. The infotainment gets a touchscreen capability, one of the biggest pricking flaws in the previous generation. Overall, the Lexus ES 350 is worth the pick over some European name, if and only if, comfort and relaxed ride quality is your priority. If you are looking for something sporty yet luxurious, the Germans do a better job.
