About 2022 Lexus LS 500

3.1

Overall Rating

The Lexus LS 500 is a full-size luxury sedan and also the flagship car from Lexus.

The Lexus LS 500 is a full-size luxury sedan and also the flagship car from Lexus. Being a ‘Japanese Luxury Sedan’, it competes against well-established luxury sedans from top-notch German brands and gains ascendancy over its rivals by being opulent and plush. It competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 L, and BMW 7-series. 2022 LS 500 is a pragmatic choice among deluxe sedans that is more affordable compared to its rivals offering similar tech and comfort.

The 2022 LS 500 is offered in a single trim. However, there are a couple of options in drivetrains. Which Trim should you buy?

The 2022 LS 500 is offered in a single trim. However, there are a couple of options in drivetrains. Additionally, we recommend you install the car with Luxury Package and Lexus Safety System+ Advanced Package. Once you fit these packages, your car will possess not only appealing and premium techs and comforts but class-leading safety features as well.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The Lexus LS 500 is powered by a 3.5L bi-turbo V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The power churned out drives either the rear wheels or all the wheels depending on the drivetrain you choose. The six-cylinder engine offers a hefty 416 ponies of power and 442 lb-ft. of torque that makes the car stay on its toes. The hefty power and torque offered by the engine help it with impressive acceleration and good performance. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph at just 4.6 seconds and can reach a quarter-mile within 13.2 seconds.

Power delivery from the engine is high and smooth. The engine is generally consistent but with occasional lags and hesitancy. The RWD variant is 0.2-0.3 seconds faster than the AWD variant and offers a greater punch in the lower revs. However, the AWD variant being slightly slower offers better traction and equilibrates stability. All these make the drive creamy and worthwhile. Once you press the gas pedal, the car flees instantly, but what makes it better is the silky-smooth engine. The impressive powertrain adds to its premium nature and once you drive it, you crave more.

*2021 MY data used for reference

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the most expensive sedan in the competition. Being powered by a 3L six-cylinder hybrid engine setup, its powertrain is the strongest. As a result, it is the best performer and the fastest in the competition. Following the Mercedes, the Lexus LS 500 is the most affordable in the competition. The LS 500 is powered by a bi-turbo V6 engine that offers excellent power and torque. As a result, the performance is impressive.

However, the Audi A8 L and BMW 7-Series, remain at the opposite end of the spectrum. Both these sedans are slower in comparison to their counterparts and take about 5.5 seconds to the 60mph mark. But with no electronic limits on their top speed, both the Audi and BMW manage to breach the 170 MPH mark.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The LS 500’s engine offers impressive power and torque that results in an effortless and responsive acceleration. However, what further makes us admire it is its fuel economy. The RWD variant offers 18 and 29 miles across the city and highway respectively. Being packed with a 21.7-gallon fuel tank, the LS 500 lasts for 477.4 miles combined. The AWD variant offers a lesser fuel economy. It offers 17MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.

The BMW 7-series offers the most efficient engine. Its mileage of 25 MPG is praiseworthy. Though it comes with a small fuel tank, the combined range of 515 miles is better than the rivals, credits to its superior MPG numbers. On the other side, the Audi stays at the bottom because of low mileage. The best deal is offered by the Mercedes S-Class. Despite being the best in power and performance, it offers laudable EPA figures and with the largest fuel tank of 22.2-gallons, it manages to surpass the competitors, averaging a range of 533 miles.

Interior
7.5/10

Being a luxury brand of Toyota, Lexus well justified itself in the competition. With the S-Class and 7-series heavily opposing it, Lexus’s answer to that is a finely sculpted cabin that feels premium and comes blessed with plenty of features. If we had to describe the LS 500’s cabin in a word, we would call it ‘innovating’. The cabin offers a seating arrangement for 5 people with an adequate amount of space at the front. The rear is surprisingly cramped and we recommend it only if you are a child, have a pet, or for storage in case you run out of cargo space.

The cabin comes fitted with Kiriko Glass and genuine wood interior inserts. The seats are leather-trimmed, wide, supportive, and comfortable. The front comes fitted with 16-way power-adjusted bucket seats with power-adjusted headrests. The front seats also come with heating and ventilation functionalities, which come in handy in harsh weather conditions. The rear seats are wide and restful but feel cramped due to tight legroom. For cargo storage, the LS 500 offers a 16.9 cu-ft. cargo trunk that can accommodate 6-7 bags and luggage.

While the 2022 Lexus LS 500 is curated to be comfortable and luxurious, its infotainment system does add an element of quirkiness to the cabin. This time around, the sedan comes equipped with a 12.3-inch central display screen and now uses a 12-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. It gets packed with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and satellite radio. Moreover, it comes with the Lexus Enform Suite and is extremely intuitive and responsive, enhancing the overall cabin experience.

All the sedan offers a standard seating capacity for 5 people. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers the most spacious and comfortable seats. The BMW 7-series follows the S-Class with similar seating space. While the Lexus LS 500 trails with tighter seats. The BMW 7-series offers the biggest cargo trunk of 18.2 cubic feet, which can easily accommodate a fair amount of bags and luggage but the S-Class falls short at the end with the smallest cargo trunk.

Standout interior features:

Exterior
3.0/10

When we first saw the 2022 LS 500 we were flabbergasted and we gazed at it helplessly. The sleek design language, well-fitted headlamps, and wheels were encouraging to watch. The LS 500 well justifies the fact that the Japanese are aggressively coming head to head with the Germans when it comes to building cars and Lexus is a perfect example. The front fascia is dominated by sharp LED headlamps that fit in all LED premium tri-beam adaptive headlamps. Between the sharp LED headlamps, a dark metallic tinted spindle grille adds to its premium look and makes it easily recognizable.

Below the headlights, the fascia comes fitted with a redesigned grille that makes the LS 500 look sportier and more appealing compared to the previous models. At the rear, LED taillamps with a wrap-around design make the rear look unique. A pair of chrome surrounded tailpipes are fitted standard on all models. The below comes standard fitted with 19” 10-spoke alloy wheels further adding to its premium nature. The standard alloy wheels look well fitted, but we recommend you fit the 20” split 5-spoke alloy wheels with a dark chrome finish.

The Lexus LS is the heaviest sedan in the competition. But its body is the smallest of all. It comes with the smallest wheelbase that helps with the best handling. Further with the highest ground clearance, it is the last one to worry about rougher surfaces. The S-Class follows the LS 500 in terms of weight but is on the bigger side compared to others. On the other side, the BMW 7-series is the lightest sedan and offers the best driving experience because of the larger wheelbase and lighter curb weight. The Audi A8 matches the Mercedes-Benz in most dimensions but it has a shorter wheelbase of 123.2 inches and even its ground clearance is the lowest in the segment. However, in terms of design, it looks the best in the segment.

Standout exterior features:

  • 19” Split 10-spoke alloy noise-reduction wheels with dark-silver machined finish
  • Premium tri-beam LED headlights
  • LED taillamps with turn signal indicators
  • Hands-free power open/close trunk
  • Chrome-plated dual chrome exhaust
  • Optional 3M Paint Protection film

Safety
4.0/10

Toyota is widely known for making safe and reliable vehicles and its luxury brand Lexus carries forward its legacy. The LS 500 is based on the TNGA: GA-L platform. In addition to that, the vehicle is stuffed with plenty of modern safety and driver assistance tech that helps in avoiding crashes and perform a better drive. The 2022 ratings aren’t available presently, but the 2021 MY gained excellent safety ratings from the IIHS. The IIHS rated it ‘GOOD’ and awarded it the ‘TOP SAFETY PICK+’.

Standout safety features:

  • Lexus Safety System+ 2.0
  • Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lexus Enform Safety Connect
  • Intuitive Parking Assist with Auto Braking
  • Adaptive Front Lighting System
  • Lexus Teammate

2022 Lexus LS 500 vs 2022 Audi A8 L

The Lexus LS 500 is the most affordable in the competition, while the Audi A8 being $9000 more expensive than the LS 500 falls second in line. As both cars thrive at a very competitive price point, both are an excellent choice among sedans. However, we recommend the Lexus LS 500 for reasons more than. It is more powerful and thus is faster than the A8. It also boasts top-notch build quality. From the paintwork on the outside to the materials used in the cabin, the materials used are one of the finest we have seen. Lastly, the standard safety feature list is vast. Therefore, the LS 500 seems to be a better choice.

2022 Lexus LS 500 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Lexus LS 500 being the most affordable, while the Mercedes-Benz S-Class being the most expensive leaves us in a dilemma here. Both the sedans are excellent and come bestowed with a wide variety of practical talents. However, if we were to choose to be lenient to the budget, we’d go for the S-Class any day. The S-Class features a better engine that offers not only the best power and performance but is surprisingly efficient. The cabin inside is richer and more spacious. Compared to the tighter cabin of the LS 500, the S-Class offers a more comfortable and spacious cabin.

2022 Lexus LS 500 vs 2022 BMW 7-series

Both Lexus and BMW are excellent in their respective areas. The Lexus LS 500 offers a better engine that offers superior performance. It's affordable and costs 10-grand less than the latter. However, after taking a look at the features and specs, it’s clear that the BMW 7-series makes more sense. Firstly, we love the way the 7-series look. Secondly, the engine inside may be underpowered compared to the LS 500’s, but its oneness lies in its efficiency. Secondly, the cabin inside feels like a dream. Henceforth, the BMW is what we recommend.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Lexus LS 500 is a perfect match for a popular saying ‘Jack of all trades’ and we mean it. It looks amazing and frankly, we love how Lexus is still embracing its originality. The cabin inside is modern and rich. It comes fitted with loads of features and comforts. For safety, it comes loaded with a diverse set of features. It's affordable and arguably the most practical choice in the competition. Thus, it is a no-nonsense option among luxury sedans. It runs fast, feels premium, looks charming, and is undoubtedly safe!
