2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Review

Pros

  • Segment leader in the cargo volume
  • Superb turbo engine
  • Potent braking setup
  • Handles better than its rivals
  • A heavy hauler of its class

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Subpar fuel economy
  • Most of the safety tech is optional

Mercedes has always been appreciated for its luxury and high-performance offerings. However, one must be present in all the segments to diversify the business and make more money, and Mercedes-Benz has very well established its roots in the commercial van segment.

Overview

Mercedes has always been appreciated for its luxury and high-performance offerings. However, one must be present in all the segments to diversify the business and make more money, and Mercedes-Benz has very well established its roots in the commercial van segment. The Metris Cargo Van is a great option for small-scale businesses or services that want nothing but utility at an affordable price.

Pricing and Features
6.5/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris is offered in a single trim level but in different wheelbase formats. The 126” wheelbase is the standard option and the longer 133” will provide much better cargo space for a less than $1000 price increase. Cargo vans are always stripped-off of convenience features and only get mere basics. Being a Mercedes vehicle itself increases our expectations and the Metris is surely a bit better compared to its rivals. Moreover, for 2022 MY, we get an upgraded infotainment unit.

For your or your employee's comfort, the 2022 Metris Cargo Van comes with a manual air-conditioning unit and manually adjustable seats with lumbar support as well. Cargo Vans have a higher height than most vehicles yet the wheels are small so chances of toppling over increase. To reduce this to an extent the Metris comes with a crosswind assist that will help the user tame the van on windy days. From the optional packages list, the van can be fitted with cruise control, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering, 4.2-inch instrument cluster. For passenger safety, we get blind-spot assist and a first aid kit.

Which Trim should you buy?

This cargo van is offered in only one trim so no other choice in that regard. However, you can get longer wheelbase variants for more cargo space for less than a $1000 premium. The standard cargo space is 183 cubic feet and the wheelbase difference increases it to 199 cubic feet. The volume jump is not massive and this configuration will slash the payload capacity by 45 lbs. Mercedes is offering a few nice options like leather-wrapped steering, cruise control, and some extra security features.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Mercedes-Benz Metris has always been the most powerful cargo van in the segment. Where all the vans are well under the 200 number the 2022 Metris Cargo Van pumps out 208 hp and a massive 258 lb-ft of torque. It helps the van reach 0-60 MPH in 8.4 seconds. Quite impressive for something that’s meant for hauling stuff. Metris also is the best-rated van in terms of payload capacity at 2205lbs. The 5000lbs towing capacity again is best in its class, better than many SUVs even.

Metris is the only Van that gets a turbocharged engine and it’s the sole reason for its humongous power. The 258lb-ft torque is available from 1250 RPM and this proves to be a serious advantage in hauling cargo or towing loads. The 9-speed G-Tronic transmission works just like it does on any other Mercedes car. 2022 Mercedes Metris even comes with an option to get steering-mounted paddle shifters; What a nice way to attract buyers to an already expensive vehicle.

Mercedes Metris with its turbocharged engine and renowned G-Tronic transmission is a superior cargo van compared to its rivals and not just in the technical aspect. The payload capacity and towing capacity also is much better on the Merc. However, RAM ProMaster City does come close to Metris in terms of payload capacity and overall engine specs. Nissan and Ford cargo vans are into their separate league with similar acceleration timings and payload capacities. The engine on the Nissan NV200 is seriously underpowered for the task it is meant for. It will do the job no doubt about that but you will feel the lethargic nature.

How well does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van handle?

Here comes another strong point of this van. 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris has the best handling characteristics among all the other vans. The driving position is high and you can see the road wide and clear ahead of you while driving. The steering wheel is light and working with it is a breeze. Such steering setup actually proves useful in tight spaces, especially in fully loaded warehouses where actual drivable space is very little.

The Metris van can easily reach triple-digit speeds and stays planted thanks to its cross-wind assist feature. The suspension setup is very well-tuned and provides a really good ride quality. One more thing Mercedes has done out of the box contains NVH levels. The cabin is a little too silent for a cargo van, not even the road noise seeks inside the cabin. Utility vehicles are always neglected in these areas but being a German automaker, Mercedes took things a little too far. Overall, for a van that’s high and doesn’t come with any special suspension setups, the handling, and overall stability is commendable.

Braking Performance

2022 Metris Cargo Van will come with a similar braking setup as the ongoing model and it again is the best in class. The van gets 11.8-inch ventilated discs at the front and 11-inch rotors at the rear. The brakes feel confident and offer a solid bite and bring the van to a stop quickly and in a composed manner. Though the Metris van weighs in more than the rival vans the braking setup will inspire confidence in the user in any given condition.

The Metris Cargo Van has again come on top in terms of braking performance. Though the RAM ProMaster City comes with bigger brakes the rear unit is a simple drum brake which isn’t as efficient as discs obviously. All the cargo vans except for our host weigh lighter and yet the inferior braking setup on these doesn’t inspire any confidence and will perform poorly in real-life conditions.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

We saw that this Mercedes Metris Cargo van has outdone its rivals in every category but this is the one nemesis for this van. The van produces some serious firepower and that has reflected on the fuel economy section with pretty low numbers compared to the rivals. It returns 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. But Mercedes has made sure that this can get a decent workable range by providing an 18.5-gallon fuel tank. This even though the actual numbers are lower allows the van to travel almost similar ranges like its rivals or better in some cases.

Ford Transit Connect is a good all-rounder option that has ample power under the hood and also is the most economical van today. For business owners, fuel economy would be one of the most important things to consider while making a purchase decision. The Nissan NV200 Cargo Van offers a similar economy to the Ford but the RAM ProMaster City does something differently. Even though the city mileage is lower than most, its engine proves to be the most efficient one on the highway.

Interior
7.5/10

Most buyers will expect nothing from a cargo van and Mercedes has decided to shake that perception away. Though the cabin of the 2022 Metris Cargo Van isn’t groundbreaking, it is still decent. For 2022 MY, the addition of the bigger 7-inch touch screen is the main attraction in the cabin. The instrument cluster is the usual analog unit but you can get the optional 4.2-inch semi-digital set up to make the cabin look modern. Besides these, there isn’t anything special about this cabin with general features like cloth upholstery and a manual air-condition unit.

The steering column can’t be adjusted for reach and that’s a big disadvantage as you will have to rely upon the seat adjustments to find a comfortable driving position. There is a ton of passenger space inside as expected and the seats are comfortable for most people. Why most? Well, the width of the bottom seat is a little on the shorter side so drivers might not feel as comfortable. The seats can be adjusted manually including lumbar adjustments. Overall the 2 passengers in front will have the best possible comfort in the Metris for those long cargo hauls.

Though Mercedes has tried their best to provide a comfy cabin the RAM ProMaster City steals the show with a fully digital 7-inch instrument cluster and optional 10-inch infotainment screen. The smart storage options on the dashboard of the 2022 RAM ProMaster City van are a missed opportunity for all other vans in the competition. Nissan NV200 is all about basics but we like its clutter-free dashboard. Ford Transit Connect’s cabin is close to what we get in a sedan but it makes the front row feel smaller than it actually is.

Standout interior features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering with paddle shifter (Optional)
  • Manual lumbar adjustments
  • Manual Air conditioning unit

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Mercedes has missed the opportunity here as some rivals offer much better infotainment units. The 2022 Metris cargo van comes with a 7-inch touch screen unit with a 5-speaker sound system. We now also have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with the usual features like Bluetooth and a trial subscription of the SiriusXM satellite radio. One can get steering-mounted audio controls as well but that's optional.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 7-inch touch screen
  • Bluetooth
  • USB ports
  • 5-speaker sound system
  • Steering mounted audio controls (Optional)
  • SiriusXM

Exterior
4.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris will not have any cosmetic changes and overall, it's still the best-looking van in this segment. You can consider it as a windowless version of the Sprinter passenger van. The front end has the unique Mercedes grille with almost the same shape we get on sedans and coupes. The 16-inch steel wheels give the van a workhorse look but the optional 17-inch alloy wheels double the style quotient instantly.

On the side, we have sliding doors for easier cargo access in tight spaces and at the rear end, the 180-degree doors make working around the cargo area a breeze. A driver-side sliding door and a rear liftgate are available as options. If equipped with all the options, the Mercedes Metris van is more than just a boring cargo van.

Metris is a huge van compared to the rivals and offers the segment-best cargo room even in the standard-wheelbase option. RAM ProMaster City is close to the Metris in terms of overall dimensions but the width of the ProMaster City is still less than the Benz. Nissan NV200 gets a narrower body compared to the rivals and that means low usable space on the inside. Ford Transit Connect is the smallest van in the segment yet is wide enough to compensate for that.

Standout exterior features:

  • 16-inch wheels
  • 180-degree cargo doors
  • Sliding cargo bay doors
  • Sliding driver door (Optional)
  • Heated and power-folding mirrors (optional)
  • Fog lamps
  • Heated windshield washers

Safety
6.0/10

Commercial Cargo vans don’t get tested for crashworthiness but Mercedes-Benz has made sure to add a few more safety features to make the user feel safe. The Metris Cargo Van has received some updates in driver assistance technology and it looks like it’s the best out there in this segment.

Standout safety features:

  • Hill-start assist
  • Load sensitive electronic stability program
  • Crosswind assist
  • Driver attention assist
  • Blindspot monitoring (Optional)
  • Adaptive cruise control (Optional)
  • Parking sensors

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van vs 2021 RAM Promaster City Cargo Van

Ram ProMaster City would suffice the needs of most of the buyers, it gets less space compared to the Benz but it also costs less and returns better fuel economy. If space is all you need then there is no alternative for the RAM ProMaster City but if you want to feel good on the inside while moving around cargo the Metris Cargo Van is the best option, hands down.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van vs 2021 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van

Nissan NV200 is strictly for utility purposes. And by that we mean, as some automakers try to make the user experience better by adding some high-tech features inside the cabin, Nissan has kept it barebones. The NV200 only excels in the fuel economy and price difference. The difference is $10K but for that, you will be losing a lot like cargo space, power, and some convenience. But on the brighter side, the Nissan NV200 could also prove a real bargain deal for some small-scale businesses where driver comfort or convenience isn't the preference.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van vs 2021 Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van

Now, this is a well-rounded option in the segment. Ford Transit Connect is a small cargo van but gets a decent interior, is fuel-efficient, and starts at a lower price. Just like Metris it also comes in 2 wheelbase options. The interior of this Ford van is unlike a utility vehicle, it feels good to sit inside. If you want a small van that has it all but power then Ford Transit Connect should be a decent option to look for.

Final Verdict

2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo van starts at a much higher price than its rivals but also offers serious power and cargo space. These 2 traits would be sufficient for many people while looking out for a cargo van but for some small businesses where they can’t splurge on conveniences, this seems like a bad option. To add to that the fuel economy is something Mercedes should have looked after. Metris is a superb van that has more power than it will need and has some serious capacities but are those worth the extra money? Thus, summing it up, if you can spend this much money without worries then the 2022 Metris Cargo Van is a great cargo hauler. But even if you can, try looking out elsewhere at least once before pulling the trigger on this one.
