The Nissan Armada is the brand’s luxury full-size SUV that is currently in its second generation. Even though it's sporting capabilities are to be taken with a pinch of salt, it remains supremely capable and is an exciting car for the money.

Overview

The Nissan Armada is the brand’s full-size SUV that is currently in its second generation. Even though its sporting capabilities are to be taken with a pinch of salt, it remains supremely capable and is an exciting car for the money. The 2021 Armada received a mid-cycle refresh marked by redesigned front and rear fascias and enhanced in-cabin and driver-assistive features. Prices for the 2022 Nissan Armada start from $48,900 and the SUV is now on sale across all Nissan dealerships in the US.

The 2022 Armada received major feature enhancements as part of its massive refresh last year and it now can easily boast of modern features that used to lack in the earlier versions of the SUV. With 5 trims on offer, the 2022 Armada takes on the likes of the Toyota Sequoia, Chevy Tahoe, and the Ford Expedition.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The current Nissan Armada is offered in five trims; S, SV, SL, Midnight Edition, and Platinum. The prices start from $48,900 and going all the way to $65,300 for the Platinum trim. We expect the 2022 model to start off as slightly more expensive as the S trim gets tabled. All models get an impressive 5.6L V8 motor which produces 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.

Along with that, the full-size SUV offers has major interior and safety features on offer, like 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster display, and many more. So clearly, the Armada is filled to the brim with features more than ever.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

One of the best things about the Armada is the fact that it has a very capable engine. It is powered by a 5.6 L V-8 that produces 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and one can choose from rear-wheel or all-wheel drive layouts. This makes for a very capable SUV with a towing capacity of 8500 pounds. There is no option of a more powerful engine or more exciting drivetrain though.

But that is not to say that the car is slow. It is seriously fast for a full-size SUV that seats eight. The acceleration figures are excellent at 5.9 seconds taken to reach 60 mph from a standstill. This should be adequate for almost all buyers and that is the reason why Nissan has not provided any other engine option. It comes as a surprise that the car also handles pretty well, much better than anything that competes against it.

The Chevrolet Tahoe is the slowest car of the bunch but even that car is still plenty fast. With a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.2 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 16.7 seconds, it certainly has a healthy dose of power. But the Armada raises the bar so high that it seems like a very slow time. The Toyota Sequoia remains second fastest but is still more than half a second slower than the Nissan.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

We believe that Nissan was so engrossed in providing their Armada with a powerful engine that they completely disregarded the fact that it had to be fuel-efficient. It returns an unimpressive 19 mpg on the highway and more often than not, matches that figure in real-world performance. The combined MPG is 16 which is a figure that is pretty low by today’s standards.

Among the rivals, the Toyota Sequoia is the least fuel-efficient having a combined MPG of 15 which is even lower. The Ford Expedition is clearly the most fuel-efficient three-row SUV here. It has a smaller displacement engine blessed with Ford's iconic EcoBoost technology which allows it to offer 17 MPG on the highway and 20 MPG combined. However, the Armada makes for above-average range using its rather large fuel tank.

Interior
7.0/10

The interiors of the Armada had always been very comfortable, plush and noise insulated. The only problem was that they had started to look a little bit outdated, but the 2021 update took care of even that. Now, the material quality and the design layout look and feel amazing.

The leather in the higher trims feels plush, maybe much more than its competitors offer. It also offers a lot of features and storage spaces are in abundance. Even though it is not the biggest car in its class by any means, these giant SUVs never seem to run out of space.

All three rows promise good space to the passengers and the cargo area is decent, with 16.5 cu.ft. available behind the third row. If you want more space, you can also fold the seats flat for more space. Infotainment duties are looked after by the NissanConnect infotainment system.

The high-end models get rear-seat entertainment as well as several power outlets and connection points. The 8-inch touchscreen was a bit outdated and lacked modern features but the new 12.3-inch unit has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is no longer slow and does not in any way remind you of infotainment systems that came in previous generation cars.

Exterior
8.0/10

The previous exterior styling was aggressive but did not grab a lot of eyeballs. Not too long ago, it was often described as refined and dashing. We all felt that it looked good but that design language had moved on and the Armada definitely deserved a redesign.

Its rivals have innovated a bit in terms of their styling and hence it would be nice if Nissan followed suit too. Clearly, the feelings were mutual and Nissan redid the Armada's styling for 2021. The current design is still boxy but looks a lot more modern and contemporary.

Among rivals, the Toyota Sequoia is the heaviest car of the lot by quite a margin. At over 5600 lbs, the Armada is the second heaviest when it comes to its curb weight. Its size is also not too large but it is definitely not the smallest. It promises good ground clearance that should be enough to tackle any terrain.

Safety
8.0/10

According to the NHTSA testing, the new 2021 Armada has scored an overall safety rating of four out of five stars which is considered good enough. It has lost points when it comes to rollover ratings which are generally a weak spot for SUVs. Apart from that, the front crash safety rating seemed to be a little weak, especially on the driver's side. Here it has scored only two stars and hence calls for improvement. The list of driver assistance features is extensive as well. They include but are not limited to:

  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • Front and Rear Parking Sensors
  • Traction Control with ABS and EBD
  • Rear Cross-Traffic alert

Final Verdict

The Nissan Armada is a great car, one that is certainly worthy of a lot of praise and has been an interesting option in its class. It is a car we would recommend by all means. It provides a good experience both for the passenger and the driver, and given Nissan’s reputation for reliability, you would also be satisfied with a used model as well. As for the upcoming model, the 2022 Nissan Armada is reasonably priced as well and could arrive in the market by the fall of 2021.
