Overall Rating
The 2022 Nissan Frontier starts a new generation with the 2022 model year. The new generation comes with an all-new exterior and interior design along and comes with an improved set of safety features. However, the powertrain and drivetrain stay the same but have been retuned to meet the demand of U.S. truck buyers. Nissan is continuing with the familiar trim levels and also includes the popular Pro-4X trim. The 2022 Frontier has been released and will begin sales in late summer 2021 with an expected price
The Nissan Frontier is an all-new model and enters a new generation from the 2022 model year. That said, the engine, transmission, and drivetrain (including the suspension setup) have been carried forward and have been retuned for the 2022 model year catering specifically to the demands of the U.S. buyers. 2022 Frontier's towing capacity also increases to 6570 lbs. Starting at an MSRP of $29,440, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is on sale now across showrooms.
Encompassing a new rugged exterior design language, the 2022 Frontier stays true to the Nissan "Hardbody" style. Running the engine duties on the powertrain front is a potent 310 hp 3.8L V6. Furthermore, coming onto the interior front, the Frontier gets a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay offered as standard. Nissan also includes the Safety Shield 360 active safety tech as standard from now on.
The Frontier SV is the best bet because it is very similarly equipped to the S trim but gains an advantage of SV Convenience package and the SV Premium package that take the quality and comfort of the truck up by several notches, while also adding practical features like a tow hitch as well.

The Nissan Frontier has been updated for the 2022 model year and is now available in two configurations and three trim levels, of which we’ll take the crew cab into consideration. The trim levels include - S, SV, and Pro-4X - of which the Pro-4X is exclusive to the crew cab configuration itself. The prices for the trims start at $29,440 for the S and go up to $37,370 for the Pro-4X. That said, some of the highlighting features of the Frontier are:

Further, many more packages are offered with the 2022 Nissan Frontier, namely Pro Convenience, Pro Premium which get Leather upholstery and Upgraded interior trim, although for a premium. Moreover, a safety-oriented Tech package is also being offered across the Frontier lineup.
The Frontier SV, for $32,240 is the best bet because it is very similarly equipped to the S trim but gains an advantage of the SV Convenience package and the SV Premium package that take the quality and comfort of the truck up by several notches, while also adding practical features like a tow hitch as well.
Off-road enthusiasts will also appreciate the Pro-4X trim that has a beefier suspension, an electronic locking differenetial, and other rugged add-ons - Car and Driver
The 2022 Nissan Frontier comes with a 3.8L V6 engine which makes 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. This was the same engine used in the Frontier since the 2020 model year and Nissan has decided to carry it forward for the new 2022 Nissan Frontier. They have made no changes to the engine but have retuned the engine for this generation. The engine comes paired with a tried and tested 9-speed automatic gearbox which is designed to optimize acceleration while providing fuel efficiency, which has also been carried forward.
The transmission directs all the power to the rear wheels and comes with the added option of a 4WD drivetrain. The suspension system has also been retuned for the demands of U.S. truck owners. The 2022 Nissan Frontier's performance figures are not known but, the 2021 model with the same powertrain and drivetrain does the 0-60 sprint in 7.2 seconds, the standing quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds, and achieved a top speed of 120 mph. As the engine and drivetrain have been retuned we expect the 0-60 MPH figures to reduce by at least 0.3 seconds. However, we do know 2022 Frontier can tow up to 6,570 pounds, the same as the 2021 model.

Making the most power in the segment is the Nissan Frontier making 310 hp. Following this is the Honda Ridgeline making 280 hp followed by the Toyota Tacoma making 278 hp and the Ford Ranger making 270 hp. However, with the least power - the Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds, more than 900 pounds over the Nissan Frontier.
The 2022 Nissan Frontier is using the same engine, transmission, and drivetrain found in the previous model year, this leads us to expect the same MPG figures as the 2021 model year for the 2022 Nissan Frontier as well. The 2021 Nissan Frontier gives EPA estimated fuel economy figures of 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and a combined 20 MPG.

When equipped with 4WD, the Nissan Frontier's fuel economy numbers get slashed down by 1 MPG in all three criterias. The 2021 Frontier comes with a fuel capacity of 21.1-gallons which we expect to be carried forward to the 2022 model year. Compared to the competition, the Frontier has lower fuel economy numbers but thanks to the larger fuel tank, it could have a better driving range than the Ranger and Ridgeline.
Although the cabin looks more modern than before, it still lacks lots of basic features that are commonplace among modern trucks - Motortrend
Along with giving the Nissan Frontier a new exterior, the interior has also been updated. The seating capacity continues to be for 5 people. The interior features a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat with a 2-way manual lumbar and will continue with a manually adjustable front passenger seat. The front row seats Nissan's Zero Gravity front seats and is heated as is the steering wheel. The interior also features new trim finishers and accents inspired by adventure gear. As part of the new interior, there is better insulation, a new carpet structure for the rear.
The Pro-4X trim comes with Pro-4X cloth/leather seats with branded instrument panels and door panel accents. The interior storage options have increased in size - 4.0-liters center console storage, 5.7-liters of rear door pocket storage, and 6.5 liters of front door pocket storage. In terms of interior dimensions, due to the change in exterior dimensions, we expect there to be a change in the interior as well.

In terms of infotainment, the 2022 Frontier gets a new infotainment unit that measures 8.0-inches and is standard on all trims, this replaces the previous model's 7-inch touchscreen. There will also be the option of a 9.0-inch touchscreen as well. All versions of the Frontier will also have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features. Along with this, there will also be Wi-Fi Hotspot, a wireless smartphone charger, 4 USB ports (2 front, 2 back; type-A & Type-C) Siri Eyes Free, and also a 10-speaker Fender Sound system.
One of the major revisions done to the 2022 Frontier is in the exterior design. The exterior design combines elements of the "Nissan Hardbody" with modern elements and added a bit of aggression to the design which can be seen with the massive grille and chiseled hood, framed by new LED "interlocking" headlights.
Similar revision can be seen at the back with subtle updates done to the cab. The pick-up bed comes with the option of an available high-utility bed that includes a factory-applied spray-on bed liner. The Pro-4X trim comes with Bilstein shocks, 3 skid plates, LED Foglights, fender flares, and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Lava Red center caps wrapped in all-terrain tires.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier does not share its platform with the 2021 model year but has an improved platform. However, the 2021 model year does have a 4-star safety rating from the NHTSA and an overall "acceptable" safety rating from the IIHS. However, the new 2022 Frontier does get an improvement in safety and driver-assist features.
Safety features for the 2022 Frontier include intelligent forward collision warning, tire pressure monitoring system with easy-fill tire alert, intelligent cruise control, traffic sign recognition, intelligent driver alertness, rear door alert, and Nissan Safety Shield 360 - a suite of driver-assist features which is now standard.
Some of the Nissan Safety Shield 360 features include:
We do recommend buying the new 2022 Nissan Frontier as it is a new model coming on an improved platform and a fresh design. Along with this, there are also many safety features available as standard, which its competition does not offer or comes as optional extras, making the 2022 Frontier more appealing to get. Moreover, with a starting price tag of $29,440, the 2022 Nissan Frontier has it all that you look for in a mid-size truck.
