About 2022 Nissan Sentra

3.7

Overall Rating

The 2022 Nissan Sentra has a starting price of $19,510. It gets a 149-hp 2.0L inline-4 motor that is fuel-efficient but not grunty enough to keep you excited. Buyers will also love its stylish and attractive interior but it's not upscale by any stretch. Nissan's Safety Shield 360 is standard on the Sentra, which is a big plus.

One of the more popular sedans in the market from Nissan, the Sentra got some significant upgrades in 2020. Nissan wanted to play it safe and hence has launched the 2022 model with not a lot of changes. New for this year is the All-Weather Package for the SV trim and Midnight Edition Package for the SR trim. The rest of the specs and features remain the same. The 2022 Sentra has a starting price of $19,510.

The SV trim adds a decent list of features that make it worthy of its asking price. This trim gains an 8-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker stereo, satellite radio, premium cloth upholstery, adaptive cruise control, and additional USB ports. We also recommend equipping the SV All-Weather package for $590.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

Nissan's pricing strategy is quite aggressive- Carbuzz

The 2022 Nissan Sentra is available in three trims namely S, SV, and SR. Pricing starts from $19,510 and it goes up to $22,100, excluding a destination charge of $975. Only an FWD drivetrain is available but with a decent list of standard features. This year, Nissan added a few new optional packages for the Sentra. An All-Weather package is exclusive to the SV trim that adds a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, and heated front seats.

Another new package called the Midnight Edition package includes unique styling in the cabin and black exterior bits. The SV Premium package adds a moonroof, power driver's seat, and genuine leather seats. The SR Premium package adds the aforementioned items but replaces leather seats with synthetic leather seats. It also adds an 8-speaker Bose stereo, a 360-degree camera, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and heated front seats.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

For an affordable compact car, the new Sentra is a competent handler- Edmunds

A 2.0L inline-4 engine is the only powerhouse available in the Nissan Sentra. This engine is capable of churning out 149 hp and 145 lb-ft. of torque. It is mated to a CVT transmission while FWD configuration is standard. The engine makes enough power within city limits but it struggles on highways as maximum torque kicks in at a higher rev range.

The Sentra delivers a smooth ride quality even on broken pavements as it is fitted with a rear multi-link suspension instead of a torsion beam. However, the large 18-inch wheels can make the ride bumpy. The steering is precise but lacks proper feedback. When it comes to handling, the Sentra offers good grip levels and the body movements are kept in control.

The powertrain feels underpowered while accelerating and hence, it takes 9.2 seconds while sprinting to 60 MPH from a standstill. The quarter-mile distance is covered in 17.1 seconds, which is comparatively slower than its classmates. On the other hand, the brakes are responsive with zero brake fade. The braking distance of 122 feet is quite decent for a compact sedan.

As mentioned earlier it has one of the most powerful engines in the compact sedan segment. When compared to the top-selling car in the comparison, the Toyota Corolla; The Nissan has a 10 horsepower and a significant torque advantage. However, it is on par with the rest of the comparison.

Being a naturally aspirated engine, it is great fun to drive but it takes a toll on the fuel economy. The Nissan Sentra's fuel economy is average for the class. The EPA-estimated figures are 29 MPG in the city, 39 MPG on the highway, and 33 MPG combined. The SR trim's fueled economy is marginally less frugal at 32 MPG combined.

Although it doesn't use a turbocharger, its CVT gearbox helps to maintain decent numbers. Compared to its rivals, the Sentra gets a small fuel tank that measures 12.4 gallons in size. You can expect a driving range of 360 miles in the city and 484 miles on a highway. This equals to a combined range of 409 miles is available before your visit to the gas station.

Clearly, the Hyundai Elantra dominates this section despite housing a small fuel tank. The Toyota Corolla's fuel economy and driving range are saved by its large fuel tank. The Honda Civic is slightly more efficient than the Sentra and therefore, has a better driving range. The Sentra ranks the lowest in this area.

Interior
7.5/10

Inside, the Sentra has one of the prettier designs in this segment- CarAndDriver

The interior is one place where the Nissan Sentra falls a bit behind its rivals, do not get us wrong. The interior layout is beautiful, especially the triple air vents mounted at the center console. Even the build quality is good but the materials used feel cheap when compared with its rivals. Higher trims come with premium cloth upholstery but there is an option of premium leather for the SV trim.

Nissan's Zero Gravity seats are one of the best in the segment. They are well-cushioned and offer a comfortable experience. The front row is adequately spacious and the seating position is also good. Note that adding the optional moonroof will lower the front headroom. Six-footers may feel the rear row be cramped due to the low roofline but legroom is good. Overall, the Sentra's cabin is comfortable.

The cargo space of 14.3 cubic feet available in the Sentra is good for the class. That's enough space to swallow five carry-on bags. But if can hunt for more space by folding the rear seats and there's some decent interior storage as well. The infotainment system would be a standard floating 7-inch touchscreen that sits in the center of the dashboard while the other models upgrade to a larger 8-inch touchscreen.

Both screens come standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The interface isn't that intuitive and the system lags frequently. Also, the graphics quality is average. Therefore, Missan needs to up its game in this area to stay competitive against its rivals. Audiophiles will prefer the optional 8-speaker Bose sound system available on the SR trim but the regular 4 and 6 stereo speakers have decent sound quality. Some other features include:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Manually-adjustable front cloth seats
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Remote engine start
  • Power moonroof
  • 7/8-inch touchscreen w/ smartphone integration
  • Satellite radio
  • Wi-Fi hotspot

The 2022 Sentra has a lot going for it in the visuals department- Kelly Blue Book

The Nissan Sentra looks modern, sleek, and edgy. It has taken a lot of design elements from its bigger siblings, Altima and Maxima. Upfront, the angular look of the LED headlamps and DRLs make it look more aggressive. Unlike its rivals, the Sentra does not get any fake vents near the fog lamps. The low-slung hood along with the signature V-motion grille looks really beautiful.

From the side view, the Sentra definitely looks like a sport sedan because Nissan lowered the roof height by about 2 inches. The side body lines and the floating roof gives it some extra character. You get 18-inch wheels on the top-end SR trim while lower trims settle for 17-inch wheels. The rear design matches with the rest of the car. It has a high trunk, a wide stance and the smoked taillights look really good.

The Hyundai Elantra weighs around 300 lbs less than the Sentra and hence, it feels thrifty on the road. The Toyota Corolla has a shorter wheelbase which clearly reflects in its rear legroom when compared with its rivals. The Honda Civic's ground clearance is slightly higher than the Sentra for protecting its underbelly from high bumps. Some other exterior features are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED DRLs & fog lamps
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Rear decklid spoiler
  • Chrome window trim
  • 17/18-inch wheels

2022 Nissan Sentra vs 2022 Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla's base engine feels underwhelming like the Sentra but its optional engine provides noticeable punch. The Corolla's interior lacks enough rear-seat space and cargo space but compensates with an intuitive infotainment system and more standard safety technologies. Keeping in mind Toyota's strong reliability, the Corolla seems like a better pick.

2022 Nissan Sentra vs 2022 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is the Sentra's top rival in this class as it beats the latter in almost every aspect. Although it has a higher initial price, it offers more powerful engines and a more engaging driving experience. Even with the turbocharged engine, the Civic's fuel economy is much better than the Sentra. Both cars are equally spacious but the Civic offers more driver aids.

2022 Nissan Sentra vs 2022 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra is similarly priced as the Sentra but it is a better value proposition. Firstly, both its engines are robust and offer excellent fuel economies. Compared to the dull handling of the Sentra, the Elantra handles much better. Inside, both provide a roomy and modern cabin but the Elantra offers plenty of standard tech and safety features.

Final Verdict

The Nissan Sentra has definitely upped its game with the generation change that happened in 2020. However, it falls short in some regions like the interior quality and performance but if it is something that you can leave with then the Sentra is a great choice. The cabin is comfortable and roomy while fuel economy and safety ratings are good for the class.
