About 2022 Nissan Versa

3.7

Overall Rating

The 2022 Nissan Versa sticks with the same specs and features the 122 horsepower 1.6L I-4 powertrain and the option between CVT and 5-speed manual transmission. With cloth upholstery, the interior stays comfortable and practical across all trims. All set to arrive for sale in Fall 2021, the same three trims, namely, S, SV, and SR will be on offer. Furthermore, Nissan has opted to increase the prices by $250 across all trims, and the price starts from $15,955 onwards.

The 2022 Nissan Versa remains a carryover model with the same specs and features as the 2021 model. Nissan has made no changes to the Versa since it was completely redesigned back in 2020. As per the newly released pricing statement from Nissan, the price for the 2022 Versa lineup ranges between $15,955 and $19,365. The 2022 Nissan Versa sedan is now on sale across Nissan dealers in the country and can also be booked online via Nissan's Virtual store.

The interior remains comfortable, decently spacious, and utilitarian as one would expect. The top-end SR trim does come with plenty of tech as standard which makes it a stand-out offering in the segment. Being a Nissan, the 2022 Versa also achieves a maximum of 40 MPG on the highways as per the EPA ratings while producing a healthy 122 horsepower.

It competes in the affordable subcompact sedan segment against the likes of Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and the Mitsubishi Mirage G4.

The SR trim is the one that offers maximum value to buyers and is the recommended choice.

While it is the most expensive trim of the lineup at an MSRP of $19,365, it adds a long list of safety and technology to the mix which offers tremendous value to the car even in the used market. All the options and accessories can be skipped and the Scarlet Ember Tintcoat is the one that looks the most striking and can be had for an additional sum of $395.

2022 Nissan Versa Review

Pros

  • Plenty of technology at an affordable price
  • Feature loaded cabin and spacious trunk
  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Very fuel efficient

Cons

  • Lackluster acceleration
  • Tight rear-seat legroom

The 2022 Nissan Versa sticks with the same specs and features the 122 horsepower 1.6L I-4 powertrain and the option between CVT and 5-speed manual transmission. With cloth upholstery, the interior stays comfortable and practical across all trims. All set to arrive for sale in Fall 2021, the same three trims, namely, S, SV, and SR will be on offer. Furthermore, Nissan has opted to increase the prices by $250 across all trims, and the price starts from $15,955 onwards.

Overview

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

"The Versa is a satisfying subcompact car that's affordable, comfortable, and elevated by copious safety features." - Car and driver

Following in the footsteps of the 2021 MY, the 2022 Nissan Versa will continue to be offered in 3 trims- S, SV, and SR. With the prices climbing by $250 this year, the MSRP starts from $15,955 for the base S trim which gets the barebones features of the moniker. The SV trim strikes the balance in between with bigger 16-inch alloy wheels, premium cloth upholstery on the seats, and additional connectivity options for $18,000.

Sitting as the flagship option is the 2022 Nissan Versa SR that demands $18,560 from the buyers. At just $560 over the SV, you can get all of the best features that the moniker offers. Features like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with LED DRLs, and leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control are part of the standard fitments.

Opting for the Lighting package adds all of these for $705. The $880 Electronics package adds all the lightings along with a frameless auto-dimming inside mirror with HomeLink capability.

Buying Advice

The SR trim is the one that offers maximum value to buyers and is the recommended choice.

While it is the most expensive trim of the lineup at an MSRP of $19,365, it adds a long list of safety and technology to the mix which offers tremendous value to the car even in the used market. Engine and Performance
6.5/10

"The 2022 Nisan Versa doesn't claim the cheapest title anymore, and it doesn't look, feel, or drive like it anymore either." The car connection

Bringing the 2022 Nissan Versa to life is the same old 1.6L inline-4 powerhouse that came with the 2021 Versa.

Under the hood is the house of the 1.6L naturally aspirated inline-4 cylinder engine that is capable of producing a modest 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. These are put on the front wheel via the CVT transmission in all the trims. The base trim on the other hand can be had with a manual transmission as well, which reduces the starting price even further.

That being said, the road mannerisms do not change depending on the transmission. It takes quite a bit of effort for the Versa to achieve high speeds and the 2022 Versa goes from 0-60 mph in a relaxed 9.7 seconds with the manual. Push it for the quarter-mile, and it takes almost double that time at 17.4 seconds.

The CVT automatic can do the 0-60 in a slower 10.4 seconds but both the cars cruise comfortably with the top speed rated at 115 MPH.

Compared to the rest, the Nissan Versa is the most powerful at an affordable price, however, it is also quite slow in terms of acceleration. The Mitsubishi Mirage is the least powerful with 76 hp, and also takes almost 20 seconds to cross the quarter-mile. The corporate cousins, Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio are only marginally less powerful, but much better at performing in acceleration.

The 2022 Versa can be more affordable and quicker with the manual transmission available for the S trim.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

"The Versa's terrific value shines in its excellent fuel economy and features like a buttery-smooth transmission." - Motortrend

Econoboxes like the 2022 Nissan Versa are made for juicing out every ounce of MPG that they can offer. With the 2022 Versa manual, you get 27 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG combined. Upgrade to the CVT, and these numbers improve drastically to 32 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on the highway, and 35 MPG combined.

That being said, what does not change is the 10.9-gallon fuel tank capacity in both the transmission options. Due to the minuscule-sized tank, the ride offers 324 miles of combined range with the manual transmission. With the CVT, the combined overall range improves and sits at 378 miles at full fuel capacity.

Contrasting to the others, even in its best avatar, the 2022 Versa still lags behind. The Mirage G4 is the fuel economy king and sits at the top with the best highway and combined fuel economy figures. The Kia Rio and the Hyundai Accent match each other with their respective MPG figures as well.

Interior
8.0/10

"The Nissan Versa is a well-built small sedan, with plenty of space inside, and enough standard technology and safety features to justify its price." - Edmunds

The interior of the 2022 Nissan Versa is nothing of a standout but adequately built for the price you pay. After the 2020 redesign, the Versa now employs less cheap plastic materials and feels more upmarket than before. Upgrading to SV or SR trim makes the cabin feel even more premium with soft elements making their way inside the cabin.

The base trim is rudimentary in nature and comes with bare minimum functionality. Apart from keyless ignition and cloth upholstery, there are very few creature comforts on offer. Upgrading to SV trim though changes the interior feel altogether. The dashboard gets covered in Prima-Tex leatherette trims along with premium cloth upholstery for the seats.

The top-of-the-line SR trim adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gets a sportier-looking premium, cloth upholstery. Also, the SR trim features remote engine start functionality. Both the standard and premium cloth upholstery are offered in charcoal color while the sport cloth upholstery is in graphite color. The fit and finish is pretty good after the upgrade couple of years ago and the car feels solidly built.

Seating for 5 people is standard across all trim levels with ample space in the front rows. In the rear rows, there is still enough space, but full capacity might seem like an overkill for space. What's impressive is the 14.7 cu-ft of trunk space that is the best in the segment. One can even fold down the rear seats for added cargo space.

In this lineup, Hyundai Accent offers the most spacious cabin followed by its corporate cousin, the Kia Rio. The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is also not far behind as it offers the best rear legroom in the interior. The Nissan Versa shoves all the space in the front and leaves the rear feeling slightly cramped.

Nissan offers two different 7-inch infotainment systems for the 2022 Versa.

The standard infotainment system on the 2022 Nissan Versa is a 7-inch touchscreen unit that comes with 4-speakers as standard. It features only basic functionality like radio, Bluetooth and Siri Eyes Free. The SV trim onwards gets the NissanConnect interface and it comes with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Navigation in the SR and SV trims.

The SV trim also features the same 4-speaker audio system while the SR trim adds a couple of more speakers. Some of the notable interior and infotainment features are listed as follows:

  • Automatic Temperature Control with in-cabin microfilter
  • Remote keyless entry and remote engine start
  • Multifunction leather steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • NissanConnect 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system w/Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • SiriusXM satellite radio and navigation system
  • Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System and Three USB ports

Exterior
9.0/10

"Nissan gives its Versa a very low drag coefficient of 0.29 and also brings it family resemblance to the Altima and Maxima models." - KBB

The exterior design of the 2022 Nissan Versa does not see any changes from the previous year. At the front, you get the signature V-motion grille like the other Nissan sedans like the Altima, Sentra, and Maxima. Additionally, the LED headlamps with LED DRLs, are reserved just for the flagship trim. The SR trim also gets a darker chrome finish than the lower configurations.

The wheel size changes across all trim levels starting from 15-inch steel wheels with wheel caps on the base S trim, climbing to 16-inch alloys with the SV trim, and maxing out at 17-inch alloy wheels in the flagship SR trim. Due to this, the ground clearance varies on the basis of the wheel size bit ride quality is not compromised in any way.

Overall, the design and exterior demeanor of the 2022 Nissan Versa is quite docile and agreeable with the right amalgamation of the curves and straight lines. It is offered in 7 color options, there are 3 colors that demand $325 extra while the other 4 are available as free options. The SR trim also features LED foglights and a rear spoiler as standard, the latter can be added optionally on the lower trims.

Compared to the rest, the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is the lightest car but is also the smallest one in this comparison. The additional length and wheelbase of the Nissan Versa help it open up more space inside its cabin and trunk.

In terms of styling too, it is the Versa that looks the most stylish with the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent coming in at a close second.

Safety
6.0/10

The 2022 Nissan Versa is the same car as last year, and hence, there are no changes in the structure. The 2022 Versa has received a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and while the IIHS has not tested the car in all its aspects, but it received 'Good' rating in the ones it was tested in for the 2021 model year.

Nissan also includes Nissan SafetyShield 360 (driver-assist features) as standard features on the SV and SR trims. Another reason to opt for one of the higher trims. Some of its notable active and passive safety features are:

  • Auto High-beam assist Headlamps
  • Front and rear collision mitigation system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blindspot monitoring and alert system.
  • Driver monitoring alert
  • SONAR parking sensor alert with rear-view camera

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Nissan Versa vs 2022 Kia Rio

The Kia Rio comes at a marginally lower price than the Versa for the CVT trim. While the 2022 Versa has more power and torque, the Rio is quicker off the mark. It also gets more features as standard and has a more usable rear-seat legroom. Both offer sufficient comfort and safety tech, but the superior warranty program offered by Kia tilts the scales on its sides.

2022 Nissan Versa vs 2022 Hyundai Accent

Both Accent and Versa have an almost identical asking price, and similar to its corporate cousin, the Rio, Accent is far more quicker than the Nissan. The Accent also offers the same impressive 10-year warranty and has more features offered as standard. The rear seat has better legroom and hence makes it the preferred choice here.

2022 Nissan Versa vs 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4

The Mirage G4 is considered the ultimate econobox in the market. It has superior MPG ratings but is painstakingly slow off the line. While the cabin is more spacious than the Versa, the trunk is smaller and the interior feels very utilitarian. The 2022 Versa offers a more premium feel, more technology, and has better safety aids than the Mitsubishi. Hence, the 2022 Versa is the one to be chosen over the Mirage G4.

Final Verdict

As always, the 2022 Nissan Versa will be released for sale in dealerships in Fall 2021. That being said, it does offer a well-mannered driving experience, adequately comfortable interior, and a fairly feature-rich build. Furthermore, it backs itself with great MPG figures with the CVT transmission and the tag of being the cheapest car with the most power. That said, the sedate performance is what you will have to learn to live with for the immense value that you gain.
