Overall Rating
The 2022 Subaru Forester is in dealerships now and gets a much-needed mid-cycle refresh. Available at a starting MSRP of $26,320, the 2022 Subaru Forester gets refreshed exterior styling, new headlamps, revised tech and features, and an all-new “Wilderness Edition”.
The 2022 Subaru Forester has finally reached dealerships with a much-needed mid-cycle refresh. The 2022 Subaru Forester gets a key facelift band starts at an MSRP of $26,320 which includes the $1,125 destination charge. With its 2022 facelift, the revised Subaru Forester now gets boxy-looking headlamps, redesigned grille, and new wheels along with optional gesture control for the climate control system and a standard panoramic sunroof for all but the base trim.
Along with some mild cosmetic tweaks, we also get a “2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition” with an aggressive off-road body kit positioned between Limited and Touring trims. While the new “Wilderness Edition” would bring in higher ground clearance, chunkier wheels, and heavy exterior cladding, the EyeSight driver-assist suite of features has also been updated. It also brings along AWD as standard which gives it an advantage against its rivals like the Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Mazda CX-5, and Toyota RAV4.
Although the 2022 Forester has a low starting price, the base trim feels lackluster in terms of features. Therefore, opting for the 2022 Forester Sport trim should be the sensible choice as it gets all the features that one might need and also adds flair to the SUV with the orange accent stitching, the larger touchscreen, and larger wheels to name a few.

"The Forester combines good ability in all aspects for a great package that is affordable, comfortable and capable." - Carbuzz
The 2022 Subaru Forester will carry forward the five-level trim structure as seen on its current 2021 model, namely Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. However, there is also a new off-road-oriented “Wilderness Edition” for 2022 which sits right between the Limited and Touring trim with additional rugged bodywork and higher ground clearance.
Keeping its legacy alive, even the base 2022 Forester gets niceties like Adaptive LED Headlights, Automatic Climate Control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Subaru’s Eyesight Driver Aids among others. The EyeSight suite gets upgraded camera sensors which widen the field of view of the system. The MSRP for the base 2022 Subaru Forester starts at a low $26,320 but features very limited amenities.

Although the 2022 Forester has a low starting price, the base trim feels lackluster in terms of features. "The sure-footedness of the 2022 Forester brings some compensation for what is not a great amount of power, but enough to pull the Forester uphill with a full complement of people." - Kelley Blue Book
There have been no changes made to the engine of the 2022 Subaru Forester and it continues to be powered by a 2.5-liter boxer-4 engine. It is rated to produce 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to all four wheels as standard through the AWD system that now also features torque vectoring. The engine is paired up with a CVT automatic transmission and there is no manual transmission on offer.
The naturally aspirated Boxer-4 in the Subaru does have a smooth power delivery at lower RPMs. However, in the midrange, it tends to feel exhausted. The Forster handles surprisingly well for something its size and character. However, when you hit the brakes hard on emergency applications, you do get some amount of nose-dive. The suspension seamlessly swallows potholes and the steering wheel offers good feedback as well.
The Subaru Forester charges from 0-60 mph in a modest 8.4 seconds and tops out at 115 MPH. However, after a good take-off, the powertrain doesn't seem inspiring enough. The lack of a more powerful engine does affect the performance to a certain extent, but Subaru has now updated the Forester to tow a maximum of 3,000 lbs as opposed to 1,500 lbs from the 2021 Forester. This puts it ahead of its competitors and on par with the segment leaders.

On the move though, the current fifth-gen Forester is calm and composed as the rivals in its class. The Forester is the most affordable AWD crossover here as rivals with AWD cost considerably more. The RAV4 is the priciest one and has the highest engine output. That said, both the RAV4 and the Forester have similar acceleration timings, while the Mazda CX-5 is the sportiest one here, both in terms of acceleration timings and handling.
With the 2022 Subaru Forester continuing with the same engine, it returns the same MPG figures as its outgoing 2021 model year. The 2022 Forester returns a maximum of 33 MPG on the highways and 29 MPG combined economy even with the standard AWD drivetrain. The large 16.6-gallon fuel tank further aids the Forester in offering a class-leading driving range of well over 450 miles combined city and highway driving on a single tank of gas.

Only the Toyota RAV4 returns better fuel efficiency than the Forester, but it too is no match to the impressive range Subaru has to offer. The sporty Mazda CX-5 has the highest fuel consumption amongst the cars present here which also affects the driving range it has to offer. The CR-V offers a very similar fuel economy to that of the Forester but employs a smaller gas tank which adversely affects the driving range.

"The Forester SUV delivers the feel and rugged attitude that the buyers want, alongwith a comfortable cabin and plenty of features for the price." - Edmunds
Not much has changed in terms of the interior of the 2022 Subaru Forester. It continues to offer a simple and straightforward design language with a commanding seating position and good outward visibility. The build and material quality is pretty good as well and the cabin has been ergonomically designed with everything falling in easy reach. There are some hard plastics employed, but considering how well it is packaged and the low price tag, nobody is complaining.
The front seat is very spacious and comes with enough headroom and legroom to accommodate tall passengers comfortably. There are cloth bucket seats offered as standard with the higher trims unfolding leather and premium synthetic upholstery. The “Premium” model gets you heated front seats with power-adjustability for the driver while only the Touring trim features a powered passenger seat. The spacious 28.9 cu-ft of trunk space can be extended to a massive 76.1 cu-ft with one-touch folding rear seats on the top Touring trim.

The rear headroom falls short whereas the shoulder and legroom are very decent. The Honda CR-V offers the most spacious cabin and trunk space in this comparison while the RAV4 has a pretty large trunk too but compromises the rear-seat space. The Forester has the smallest trunk here and feels more spacious than the CX-5, especially the front row. On the infotainment and connectivity front, Forester’s 6.5-inch standard touchscreen and an 8.0-inch unit on the “Limited and Touring” shall also remain unchanged.
The infotainment system itself is clutter-free with quick responses and comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interface is intuitive to use and does not have a huge learning curve to it, that said, the larger screen is the preferred choice as navigating the smaller screen could be tricky while on the move. While the lower trims get 4-speaker or 6-speaker audio systems, the Touring trim features a Harman/Kardon sound system.
Interior Features:
"For those who like thier Subarus with boxy SUV styling and upright seating positions, the Forester delivers." - Caranddriver
After entering its fifth generation back in 2019, the 2022 Subaru Forester gets a facelift this year with quite a few changes being made to its exterior. The headlights are now chunkier, the front grille is redesigned and so are the alloy wheels. The newly introduced Forester Wilderness edition is similar to the Outback Wilderness launched last year and features a slight suspension lift, and plenty of black body cladding for that added tough appeal.
There are also copper accents to the exterior to match similar interior accents. This new trim shall also get a unique 18-inch matte-black wheel design with Yokohama Geolander all-terrain tires for added grip. The ground clearance is raised to 9.2-inch from the 8.7-inch to offer more off-tarmac capabilities. A sliding panoramic sunroof is now standard across the lineup except for the base trim along with a powered tailgate.

Apart from the aforementioned changes, the 2022 Forester would remain similar to the current model in terms of dimensions and form factors. The Subaru Forester is not the heaviest in the segment which also aids its maneuverability. The Subaru has the highest ground clearance which is the best part and that increases the off-road capabilities. The sportier Mazda CX-5 is the one that belongs the least off the tarmac as it also has the lowest ride height here.

"The 2022 Forester rains value down on crossover SUV drivers, and safety is a very close second." - The Car Connection
Subaru cars have always earned top marks in safety ratings from crash-testing organizations and the 2022 Subaru Forester is no different. The NHTSA has rated the 2022 Forester with a "perfect 5-star overall safety rating "while it also scores a 'Good' rating in almost all aspects of the tests conducted by the IIHS. Thanks to its standard Subaru Eyesight Suite of driver assistance which brings in very handy features even in the base model, a highlight of the available features has been listed below.
Safety Features:
The CR-V not only looks plush and elegant but also offers a much more comfortable and premium cabin than the Forester. Apart from its disciplined ride, the CR-V also offers better overall cabin space and vest in class cargo as well. The Forester on the other hand gets a standard AWD and is more capable than the CR-V. Surprisingly, the Forester is also the one blessed with better standard features among the duo.
The Mazda CX-5 is a lot different than the Forester in terms of its traits. While the Forester is meant to explore the roads less taken, the CX-5 is more comfortable for highway cruising with its sporty handling. The Forester is considerably more efficient than the Mazda and offers a more spacious front seat as well. With the lower asking price and a smooth ride on offer, it makes a strong value point against the CX-5.
The Toyota RAV4 is one of the priciest in the segment due to its class-leading power figures and fuel economy figures. It offers a pretty spacious cabin and yet has the largest cargo space to offer in this segment. The RAV4 feels more capable both on-road and off the tarmac and comes loaded with features right from the base trim. Thus making it the preferred choice between the two.
If you are looking for a rugged all-rounded SUV within the budget of $30,000, the 2022 Subaru Forester is surely one of the best choices you have. It’s capable, practical, economical, easy to drive, and also offers plenty of available features on tap. For the adventure junky in you, the Wilderness Edition should take you places unexplored on weekends and yet double up as a family wagon with its immense practicality on offer.
