About 2022 Subaru Outback

3.9

Overall Rating

The Subaru Outback is a comfortable compact SUV-wagon that offers loads of practicality and has got some great off-roading skills. Now with the Outback Wilderness model, the latter gets pushed newer highs. The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness gets the turbocharged 2.4-liter motor as standard and as per EPA, it will have a combined fuel economy of 24, which is not bad considering the Outback XTs' 26 mpg combined.

The Subaru Outback has been a very popular product for decades. Subaru is continuing to build on the success of the recently designed Outback with an all-new rugged Wilderness model. In fact, the Outback is the first Subaru model to get a Wilderness treatment for 2022. This model is an off-road-focused model and gets suitable equipment for the same. The 2022 Outback's MSRP now starts from $26,945 and ranges up to $39,945.

The base 182-hp 2.5L engine is peppy around the town but the 260-hp turbo 2.4L unit offers quick acceleration. The Outback receives top marks for its interior, practicality, and safety. Although its dimensions match a midsize SUV due to its wagon-like shape, Subaru brands it as a compact SUV. Therefore, it receives rivalry from other compact SUVs such as Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.

Although the base trim has sufficient features to keep you happy, we recommend you to consider the Premium trim as it adds more comfort creatures such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker stereo, and W-Fi hotspot.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

A nice-sounding stereo and plenty of charge ports are pluses- Edmunds

The Subaru Outback arrives for the 2022 model year with a new off-road-focused trim called Wilderness. Therefore, the total trim count is 8 including Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT. The base MSRP starts from $26,945 and it will go up to $39,945 for the top model. The new Wilderness trim is priced at $36,995. Add to that a destination fee of $1,125. The Wilderness trim is the main highlight this year as this is the most rugged Outback.

It has the hardware to hang on trails like sand, mud, etc. With so many trims available, the features are carefully segregated. Therefore, very limited optional packages are available, and that too for certain trims. The Premium trim can be equipped with a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, push-button start, and hands-free power liftgate for $1,400. Add more $1,595 for the power moonroof and navigation system.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The base engine is adequate for most drivers, but the driving enthusiast will really appreciate the new turbocharged engine- Autotrader

There are two engines available for the Subaru Outback. The standard unit is a 2.5L flat-4 engine generating 182 hp and 176 lb-ft. of torque as on the non-XT models. The XT models and Wilderness trim are powered by a 2.4L turbocharged flat-4 engine that makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. of torque. Both of these engines come mated to a CVT transmission with a standard AWD drivetrain setup.

For a car that weighs nearly 3,600 lbs, the Outback drives pretty nicely. It feels so composed and stable at high speeds. When you chuck it through some corners, it rewards you with resistance to body roll and really good composure.  The Outback recovers really nicely from big imperfections on the road thanks to the double-wishbone rear suspension. The steering isn't loose, it's all nice and stable.

With the base engine, it completes the 0-60 MPH sprint in 8.4 seconds whereas, for the quarter-mile, it takes 16.7 seconds. Subaru knows that isn't very impressive, and hence comes in the turbo-4 avatar which pushes this SUV to 60 MPH in about 6 seconds. The braking action is quick with good braking performance. Taking account of its heavy curb weight, the Outback takes 132 feet of braking distance which is about average.

The Honda CR-V accelerates quicker than most of its rivals but in the towing area, the Outback is the leader of the pack. It can tow up to 3,500 lbs when properly equipped. The Toyota RAV4 tries to keep up with the Outback while the Hyundai Tucson displays the slowest performance. It's worth noting that both RAV4 and Tucson don't come with an optional turbocharged engine.

The Subaru Outback isn't the thirstiest in its class- Carbuzz

The fuel economy of the Subaru Outback is on par with its class rivals. The CVT unit lets maximize the fuel efficiency without dulling up the driving experience. The Outback is rated at 26 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on a highway, and 29 MPG combined. Choosing the turbocharged engine dips the fuel economy to some extent.

The MPG numbers are 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on a highway which equates to 26 MPG combined. With a standard AWD system, the Outback leads the charts. Every Outback comes with an 18.5-gallon fuel tank that can deliver about 536 miles of driving range with the base engine and 481 miles with the turbo-4.

Although the fuel ratings of the rivals are similar to the Outback, the Honda CR-V takes the lead with better efficiency. The Hyundai Tucson's ratings are identical to the Outback but it delivers the least range here. The highway estimate of the Toyota RAV4 is slightly better compared to its rivals.

Interior

Overall, the Wilderness' cabin is every bit as nice as other Outback models and the StarTex seats are cushy and supportive- Cnet

Some of the really amazing attributes to mention about  Subaru Outback's interior are comfort and excellent space. Everything has a man-made finish so the dash, door, and steering wheel, all feel quite plasticky but they don't look cheap. The dashboard has a flowing design and simplistic lines that are in sync with the vertically-oriented touchscreen integration. You get some gloss black finishes and brushed aluminum even on the base model which looks really good.

The Limited trim and onwards gains leather upholstery while fabric seats are standard. These front seats provide the utmost comfort and support even after hours of driving. However, the rest seats are a little bit firm. Creature comforts such as heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front seats are available. Both rows are roomy and can accommodate taller occupants without any hassle. Three adults can sit upright comfortably in the rear row.

Cargo Space (cu-ft.) 32.5 38.7 37.6 39.2

Another strong point of the Outback is its cargo capacity. With all seats upright, you get 32.5 cu-ft. of space. This increases to 75.7 cu-ft. with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Moreover, a hands-free power tailgate is also available. The dashboard is dominated by a verticle 11.6-inch touchscreen on higher trims but a pair of 7-inch touchscreens come as standard fitment. The top screen controls audio while the bottom screen is used for climate settings.

Smartphone connectivity such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth is standard. The base infotainment system has structured menus which is not the same case with the larger screen. Though, graphics quality is much better on the bigger screen. The screens respond quickly to the user's inputs. You have to get the optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system if you are a music freak. Some other cabin features include:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated & ventilated front seats
  • Cloth/leather seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • 7/11-inch touchscreen w/ smartphone integration
  • 4/6-speaker stereo
  • Wi-Fi hotspot

Roof rails and plastic side cladding emphasize the SUV vibe of the 2022 Outback- Kelly Blue Book

With a trapezoidal grille, a large air intake, and sharp headlights, the Subaru Outback has amazing styling elements that it shares with other models from the carmaker. But what makes it look like a wagon and an SUV is its muscular yet rugged body structure. The Wilderness model looks substantially different from the regular Outback. It is more stylish with purpose. There's a front-end revamp too and that is exclusive for the off-roading version.

The obvious change is the 9.5-inch ground clearance while the approach angle is 7 degrees higher than the regular Outback. It also gets exclusive 17-inch alloys and rides in Yokohama Geolander all-terrain tires. They bite sand, dirt, and mud better than the regular all-season. Subaru also added more cladding as if there weren't enough already. The roof rack can hold up to 700 pounds because it's all metal and there are no cross rails.

The Hyundai Tucson has the lowest ground clearance here for easy egress and ingress. The short wheelbase of the Honda CR-V doesn't affect its cabin space. Instead, the CR-V can burn out quickly while accelerating. At 180.9 inches, the Toyota RAV4 is the shortest vehicle among the bunch. Therefore, maneuvering it will be easy. Some other exterior features are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED DRLs & fog lamps
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Black roof rails
  • Black fender lip moldings
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Front underguard bumper

All Outback models come standard with the company's EyeSight suite of driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

The Subaru Outback received an overall 5-star safety rating by NHTSA while IIHS gave it its top-most designation i.e. the Top Safety Pick+ for its extraordinary scores in all crash tests. The SUV also scored a 'Superior' rating for the front crash prevention. All these ratings prove the fact that the Outback is a safe car.

A plethora of driver-assist features are standard on the Outback and that's the reason for its excellent safety ratings. Few driver aids are available on top trims. There's an added seatbelt reminder facility for the front passengers along with the rear seat reminders as standard in the safety suite. Some other safety features include:

  • High Beam Assist
  • DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System
  • Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Reverse Automatic Braking
  • Brake Assist with Brake Override System
  • 180-Degree Front-View Monitor
  • Rear-Vision Camera
  • STARLINK Safety and Security
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Head-Up Display
  • Lane Departure Warning

2022 Subaru Outback vs 2022 Hyundai Tucson

The redesigned Hyundai Tucson is more promising with its bold looks and an interior that matches premium SUVs. Unlike the Outback, only one engine powers the Tucson. Both SUVs offer a spacious interior but the Tucson's cabin is filled with lots of the latest tech features. Like the Outback, the Tucson also won the Top Safety Pick+ award but the latter offers more safety technologies.

2022 Subaru Outback vs 2022 Toyota RAV4

Similarly priced as the Outback, the Toyota RAV4 comes with more standard features. Its powertrain offers a satisfying acceleration but a turbocharged engine is missing in its lineup. Inside, the RAv4's cabin is roomy but its cargo capacity is behind the Outback. The RAV4 didn't win any safety awards like the Outback but it does offer a long list of driver-assist features.

2022 Subaru Outback vs 2022 Honda CR-V

The base engine in the Honda CR-V provides great acceleration and slightly better fuel ratings than the Outback. It is highly practical in nature but it lacks enough standard features for its price. The cabin is tasteful and roomy but the infotainment system is quite irritating to use while smartphone integration is not provided standard. Safety-wise, it doesn't much safety features as the Outback.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Subaru Outback is a rare vehicle that appeals to everyone. It's an excellent alternative to an SUV and it proves the theory that people have a fixation on SUVs. The Outback does everything that an SUV does without needing to have an SUV. It has stacks of room inside and that new technology suite is very cool. The Wilderness model is not going to keep up with the Jeep on all the biggest, toughest trails but it's going to still go pretty far.
