About 2022 Tesla Model 3 electric

4.2

Overall Rating

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 is available for sale and now has a starting price of $46,440. The electric range of Standard Range RWD and Long Range variants have been increased to 272 miles and 334 miles respectively by about 5 miles. The Model 3 Performance can deliver a maximum range of 315 miles while it can do 0-60 in just 3.1 seconds as opposed to 5.8 seconds of the base trim. The interior of the Model 3 is very simple but looks futuristic with the large single screen at the center of the dashboard.

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 gets a few changes this year which includes renaming the base Standard Range trim as just Rear-Wheel Drive along with the Long Range and Performance configurations. A lithium-ion phosphate battery replaces the nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery from the 2021 model year. Even with the change in specs with a less dense battery pack, the standard range has increased to 272 miles and 358 miles for the Long Range trim.

It can do the 0-60 MPH in 5.8 seconds with the 283 horsepower base model while the quickest Model 3 Performance can do the same in 3.1 seconds. The 2022 Model 3 is available for sale across the country with prices starting at $46,440. The interior gets plenty of creature comforts as standard along with the wide network of Tesla's Supercharger network make the Model 3 feel worth the higher price tag.

It competes against other EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Nissan Leaf, and the Polestar 2.

The mid-spec Long Range model of the 2022 Tesla Model 3 offers the most value for money.

It has a dual-motor setup and standard AWD, just like the top-spec Performance trim. But the Model 3 Long Range offers the maximum range of 353 miles as well, which is more than any of the other trims. Along with that, it also adds heated rear seats and a 15-speaker audio system and yet does not exorbitantly expensive.

2022 Tesla Model 3 electric Review

Pros

  • Sharp and agile handling
  • Tesla performance at a lucrative price
  • An impressive set of features and gizmos
  • Pretty tech-laden
  • Impressive drive range for a small EV

Cons

  • Quality and reliability still a concern
  • Sub-par NVH levels

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Model 3's lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto puts it at a disadvantage compared to many competitors- Edmunds

This year, the 2022 Tesla Model 3 has renamed the Standard Range model to Model 3 RWD. But, it continues to offer three configurations namely- Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range, and Performance. The 2022 Model 3 now has a starting price of $46,440 due to the changes made this year. That's around $7,000 more than the outgoing model and this price is before the $1,200 destination charge. A fully-loaded Model 3 can cost up to $60,440.

The Base trim comes with a single motor setup and RWD drivetrain only whereas the Long Range and Performance variants get a dual-motor setup and standard AWD configuration. The majority of the features are offered as standard while a 15-speaker audio system and heated rear seats are added on the higher trims.

Buying Advice

The mid-spec Long Range model of the 2022 Tesla Model 3 offers the most value for money.

It has a dual-motor setup and standard AWD, just like the top-spec Performance trim. But the Model 3 Long Range offers the maximum range of 353 miles as well, which is more than any of the other trims. Along with that, it also adds heated rear seats and a 15-speaker audio system and yet does not exorbitantly expensive.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Acceleration comes instantly, and its responsive steering and low center of gravity help it whip around turns- Cars.USNews

The base variant of the Tesla Model 3 is powered by a single electric motor that makes 283 hp and 307 lb-ft of torque. The Long Range and Performance trims use a dual-motor setup and come standard with an AWD drivetrain. The Long Range model makes 346 hp and 389 lb-ft. of torque while the Performance model produces up to 450 hp and 471 lb-ft. of torque.

All this power is sent through a single-speed drive automatic transmission. The single-speed direct-drive transmission provides the engine with flawlessness which is better than the usual mechanical gear-shifting box. The Model 3 has got a perfect 50/50 weight distribution which means it handles really well.

Tesla claims that the 2022 Model 3 will now do the 0-60 MPH sprint in 5.8 seconds and has a top speed of 140 MPH. The Long Range model can do the same in just 4.2 seconds with the top speed limited to 145 MPH, while the Performance trim does the same in 3.1 seconds and has a 161 MPH top speed. Unlike other EVs, Tesla doesn't offer different levels of regenerative braking but the braking power is good enough to achieve 123 feet of braking distance.

Setting a benchmark with its performance, the Model 3 stands way above others in the segment. The Hyundai Ionis the least powerful of the lot and hence is also the slowest. Both the Chevy Bolt EV and the Polestar 2 offer similar acceleration performance, which is about a second slower in the 0-60 MPH run,

That said, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is about $10,000 cheaper than the Model 3 is pretty quick as well.

When it comes to efficiency, the 2022 Tesla Model 3 is one of the most efficient EVs available in the market today. The EPA ratings of the base Rear-Wheel Drive model are 138 MPGe in the city, 126 MPGe on a highway, and 132 MPGe combined. Comparatively, the Long Range gets lower ratings by 1 MPGe. The Model 3 Performance is rated for 118/107/113 MPGe in city/highway/combined respectively by the EPA.

This year, Tesla has increased the driving range of the Base and Long Range variants. It now delivers 272 miles as standard, which is 9 miles more than the outgoing model while the Long Range can drive up to 358 miles. The Performance variant delivers only 315 miles. The 120kW Tesla Supercharger can charge the 50kW battery in just 2 hours while the 7kW home charger can add 44 miles of range per hour and will take around 13 hours to replenish the battery completely.

No rival can challenge the Model 3 when it comes to its efficiency and driving range. The MPGe ratings and range of the Chevy Bolt EV are slightly better than the Polestar 2. Although their battery packs are bigger, they can't match the Model 3 in terms of range. The Ioniq Electric has the smallest battery pack and even with the impressive efficiency ratings, it has the shortest range to offer.

The Model 3's interior is minimalist and handsome, almost Scandinavian in terms of its look and feel- Kelly Blue Book

Moving to the interior, Tesla continues with the minimalistic design in the 2022 Tesla Model 3 as well. The Model 3 makes use of leather-free vegan upholstery and it can come in an all-black finish as standard. However, the $1,000 Black and White color scheme does bring in quite an additional amount of light. Even the steering wheel is wrapped in synthetic leather and the two scroll wheels are well-positioned.

The seats themselves are really soft and comfortable. The front seats come standard with 12-way power adjustability, which can help you find the right amount of comfort. The front row offers ample passenger space. Taller people might feel hesitant to sit at the back but legroom is plentiful. The standard glass roof gives an airy feel to the cabin and does block out pretty much of the sun's rays.

The Model 3 offers a trunk space of 19.8 cu-ft which includes the front trunk and folding down the rear seat can open up to 40.3 cu-ft of cargo space.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric with its hatchback-style trunk offers the most cargo space and offers similar cabin space as the Model 3. That said, the material quality is better in Tesla. The Bolt EV might be the smallest car here, but has the most spacious rear seat in this comparison. The Polestar 2 on the other hand has the least rear-seat legroom and the smallest trunk here.

A large 15-inch touchscreen display is planted at the center of the dash as standard which basically controls almost everything in this car.

There are three ways of operating the functions of the car via the app, the touchscreen or via a physical button found at the back. It's a shame that the Model 3 does not support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also, there are no hard buttons present below the screen and everything is touch-sensitive which makes it difficult to use on the move. You have to rely on this screen for activating windshield wipers or adjusting mirrors or popping the trunk open. On the bright side, the large display has high-resolution graphics and the interface is fluidic.

The smooth arc of the roodline tapers a bit at the sides, and it's a slippery shape-accented by door handles that sit flush to the body- The Car Connection

While seeming rather easy on the eyes, the 2022 Tesla Model 3 looks rather futuristic. From the front, you get this Aston Martin-esque type of look but with the lack of a front grille. The flared LED headlights and the dipped bonnet make the front-end styling look aggressive. Its wide wheelbase helps it to be stable at high speeds. The much obvious curvy look with smooth flowing lines makes it stand out on the road.

The lip spoiler is not only added for extra drag co-efficient and aerodynamic efficiency but it does also give a little bit of a sporty flair. As for wheels, they are available in 18-inch and 20-inch sizes as standard. The base and Long Range trims can get the 19-inch Sport wheels for another $1,500. There are not many options available from Tesla in terms of color options and the 2022 Model 3 continues to be offered in just 5 color schemes with the Red Multi-Coat showcased here costing the most at an additional price of $2,000.

The compact dimensions of the Chevy Bolt EV will be an added advantage when cutting through city traffic or parking the car at tight spots and it doesn't compromise in terms of cabin space as well. The Model 3 is the largest but it is the Polestar 2 is the heaviest one here.

On the streets though, it is the Model 3 that looks the most appealing with the Polestar also bringing in some novelty.

The Tesla Model 3 offers great safety plus a full ensemble of technology- The Car Connection

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 has received a full 5-star rating in NHTSA crash tests. We are considering 2021 model ratings as it is a carryover model. It earned the 'Top Safety Pick+' award from IIHS after getting a good score in all six crash tests. We expect the same results for this year's model too.

Tesla cars are not only known for their performance and excellent range but also top-notch driver-assist technologies. A decent list of standard active safety features is available in 2022 Model 3. Just like other Tesla cars, even the Model 3 goes the extra mile to keep you safe, thanks to the Autopilot. Some other features are:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic emergency braking w/Pedestrian detection
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Full self-drive (summoning the car, full auto parking, traffic light recognition, autonomous highway driving, automatic lane change)
  • 360-degree camera

2022 Tesla Model 3 vs 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

The Chevy Bolt EV is another cheaper alternative to the Model 3. For the power it makes, it delivers swift acceleration thanks to its low curb weight. Although its driving range is less than the Model 3, still it is pretty impressive for a hatchback. On that note, its hatchback profile allows it to offer more cargo capacity than the Model 3 while the interior is adult-friendly. But, most of the active safety features on offer are optional, which is bad news.

2022 Tesla Model 3 vs 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Electric

While the Ioniq might not sit in the same segment as the Model 3, it manages to match up with the efficiency ratings of a Tesla. It also has an equally spacious cabin and a larger trunk but there is more technology and better quality materials available in the Model 3. The superior design, much longer range, and the massive advantage of having a well-set and ever-growing Supercharger network all make the 2022 Model 3 the obvious choice here.

2022 Tesla Model 3 vs 2022 Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is the newest offering in the premium electric sedan segment and has a similar price as that of Tesla. That said, the Model 3 is much quicker off the mark and has a more spacious passenger and cargo space. While the Polestar 2 has a similar range as that of the Model 3, Tesla offers faster charging and a wide network of fast chargers across the country, and a comprehensive warranty that makes it the preferred choice here.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 continues to be a promising and exciting proposition with the all-new LFP batteries. It gets a considerable price hike this year which makes the most affordable Tesla less accessible to the masses. That said, the impressive range, fast charging, feature-loaded & spacious cabin, and stellar designs still keep it interesting for the buyers.
