2022 Tesla Model Y electric Review

Pros

  • Superlative range and performance
  • Comfortable front and rear seats
  • Hassle-free charging infrastructure

Cons

  • Exterior styling

The 2022 Tesla Model Y retains its blend of high stature performance and practicality with a combined 384 hp and 330 miles range.

Overview

With relatively little yet significant upgrades, the 2022 Tesla Model Y is all set to grace the EV space with a hiked price tag starting at $53,940. After ditching the RWD Standard Range for the 2022 model year, the Model Y will spec itself in two trims of Performance and Long Range only. Also, having 4 miles more than the 2021 model year, Model Y will feature a range of up to 330 miles along with a larger battery cell design and newly incorporated in-cabin radar.

Throttled with a combined 384 hp in a standalone AWD layout, the Tesla Model Y is reviewed as one of the finest to have a balanced powertrain. Moreover, expected to be available for sale at dealerships by January 2022, it will be heading straight against the likes of the  Ford Mustang Mach-E, Jaguar I-Pace, and Audi e-Tron. The 2022 Model Y's interior too is a place of minimalistic culture, with the entire cabin built around for the driver.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

It actually offers ways for the driver to be less engaged than in a traditional car - Kelley Blue Book

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is a 2-trim electric SUV having the Long Range as the base model at $53,940. This trim has been given heated front and rear row seating along with a 14-speaker Premium Audio, together, they make up for an engaging interior. The In-Cabin Radar and 15-inch Touchscreen Infotainment system further vouch for its technology prowess.

Being $5,000 more expensive, the Performance configuration at $58,940 simply stands for sheer flooring of the pedal. It gets 21-inch wheels and performance-oriented brakes as standards over the Long Range. However, the AutoPilot Mode, Custom Driver Profile, and Power-adjustable front seats are among the common assets on offer.

Both these Model Y trims use a dual-motor AWD setup. While the Model Y Long-Range has a 330-mile range, the Performance variant is good for 303 miles. Apart from the standard features on offer, Tesla also offers a range of various other optional packages and features such as the tow hitch, 20-inch wheels, and more for just a premium.

Buying Advice

The Long Range trim with a 7-seating layout should be chosen in the 2022 Tesla Model Y lineup. A melange of maximum accommodation, interior accents, and convenience alongside a high-definition musical jukebox makes its cabin desirable. There is hardly any question on its build-quality and safety technology and that added extra miles in this trim satiates its price tag.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

With its stellar driving range and bracing acceleration, the Tesla Model Y is a poster child for everything attractive about modern EVs - TrueCar

The 2022 Tesla Model Y sports the same set of permanent magnet synchronous and induction AC Motors that in sync churns 384 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. They are aided by a 75 kWh battery. It comes with a single-speed drive unit that is coupled in an AWD layout for both trims. To assist such a power surge, the 2022 Tesla Model Y gets a sport-tuned suspension. As a result of its subsequent stiffness, the vibrations are damped keeping the cabin completely isolated and the overall wheel geometry remains intact for cornering stability.

With its power under the platform, the Model Y has the ability to race from 0-60 MPH in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 135 MPH in its Long Range configuration. The Performance trim achieves the same feat in 3.5 seconds with a 155 MPH top speed scale.

Similar styling cues as the Model 3 sedan but with a taller roof and ovoid design - Motor Trend

Having not undergone any dimensional change or silhouette redesign, the 2022 Tesla Model Y retains its 5 exterior color options including the Midnight Silver Metallic and Red Multi-Coat. However, its simple front fascia holds Automatic HighBeam Headlights along with Perimeter Lighting for a long-range and wider flash.

In addition to that, the Tesla Model Y sprints on the 19-inch and 20-inch wheels in the Long Range trim and on 21-inch ones in the Performance trim. And, in the rear, there is a power liftgate with which comes coupled with a standard lip spoiler. Along with that, one can opt for Class II steel tow bars with Tow Hitch Package at an extra $1,000 that increases the towing to 3,500 lbs.

The same stays true when it is compared against the 1,300 lbs heavier e-Tron. The I-Pace, on the other hand, has a 0.7-inch higher ground clearance than Model Y that can assist the former in better off-roading.

  • Forward Facing radar with a range of 160m

2022 Tesla Model Y vs 2022 Jaguar I-Pace

The 2022 Tesla Model Y has been equipped with far better technology, range practicality, and overall performance curve. Though it is true that Jaguar I-Pace will engage more attraction with its look but it lacks in the offering against the market leader. Hence, it has to be Tesla Model Y between the two.

2022 Tesla Model Y vs 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

The closest in terms of range coverage to the 2022 Tesla Model Y with a parallel cabin space is the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. The sheer power and torque under the platform for the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT also surprise one. But it still has to catch up with Model Y for the level of sophistication and precision. Therefore, Tesla weighs heavier in favor.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is the best in the market and that too at a reasonable price tag. The seating comfort and unexplored superior fine finishes and touches are just content in their appeal. Also, the tech-end inside and around the cabin seems worth investing in. The control over maneuvering and autonomous drive further entice one to choose the Model Y over any other electric SUV in the segment.
