About 2022 Toyota 4Runner

3.5

Overall Rating

Featuring an all-new TRD Sport model, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner retains its impressive off-road dynamics for a starting price of $37,605

Returning with a towing animal of 5,000 lbs yet again, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner will be pretty much the same 270hp beast under the hood. However, it now embraces the newest TRD Sport in its lineup alongside the SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited for a base MSRP of $37,605. Also, the high beam LED headlights and fog lamps have been standardized for all the siblings for the first time since inception.

Marketing itself as an off-road hauler for more than a decade now, the Toyota 4Runner comes for sale with a starting lease deal of $502/month for 36 months with a $3,170 signing due. Roaring up against the miles of other adventure SUVs such as Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, and Honda Passport with its huge 89.7 cu-ft cargo space, it seems to have a tough task to take on.

SR5 Premium of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is the one that matches the vision as per wishes. With pounced comfort and interior tech-ends, the ambiance of this trim is top-notch for its price tag in accordance with its other siblings. The safety features also take a level higher with improved entertainment algorithm. So, one should consider the SR5 Premium among all.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Review

Pros

  • Potent off-roader
  • Impressive payload
  • Vast array of standard driver-assistance tech

Cons

  • Thirsty engine options
  • Rear row seating could have been improved

Featuring an all-new TRD Sport model, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner retains its impressive off-road dynamics for a starting price of $37,605

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

"Off-road enthusiasts who prioritize off-road capabilities over on-road comfort will appreciate the 2022 Toyota 4Runner." - Kelley Blue Book

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is an 8-trim SUV that hits the track with its base SR5 costing $37,605. For such a price tag, it receives an 8-speaker audio system and 8-inch Audio Touchscreen for your engagement and control settings. The Trail Special Edition at $39,575 comes next that has been given 17-inch dark gray alloy wheels along with Star Safety System as its virtues. Spending a little more at $40,450, one owns the TRD Sport that adds X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension and SofTex seats in the standard list of features. The SR5 Premium with an expense of $41,015 stands behind them as their elder configuration with values like heated front seats, Premium Audio, and Dynamic Navigation.

While the TRD Off-Road gets Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control for improved stability for an MSRP of $41,435. After that, the investment of $44,380 is translated into TRD Off-Road Premium that compounds its interior with TRD red lettering on driver and front passenger headrests and Dynamic Voice Recognition. Amounting to $47,190, the Limited arrives with perforated leather upholstery and Premium Audio with 15 JBL Speakers. It even entails heated and ventilated front seats for enhanced nestling. The last part of this Jigsaw puzzle is the TRD Pro playing bossy with its TRD-tuned front springs, TRD FOX high performance shocks, and All Terrain Tires for a round off to $52,420.

Buying Advice

SR5 Premium of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is the one that matches the vision as per wishes. With pounced comfort and interior tech-ends, the ambiance of this trim is top-notch for its price tag in accordance with its other siblings. The safety features also take a level higher with improved entertainment algorithm. So, one should consider the SR5 Premium among all.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"The 4Runner actually lives up to its rugged image, but otherwise it's utterly unrefined." - Car And Driver

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner slams 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque with its massive 4.0L V6 engine that is hooked up with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The FWD platform remains the standard layout for all except for TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro. Meanwhile, the AWD comes as an optional at an additional $1,875 ousting the FWD channel.

Retaining its ground on the tough sites, the Toyota 4Runner fits in X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension that oversees the ride height and wheel geometry. The feel gets more dramatic once those Multi-Terrain Select and Active Traction Control start off their own rallies for the TRD Off-Road configuration.  With these two, it distributes power accordingly and judiciously at wheels independently.

Towing 5,000 lbs and pay loading 1,700 lbs in a burst, the 4Runner flashes unhydrated even on the deserts. However, there is nothing much to comment on its 0-60 MPH acceleration and quarter-mile dash as of now. But one can be at peace of her/his mind as the 13.3-inch front and 12.3-inch rear vented dis brakes don't let it cross over 192 ft while braking from 70-0 MPH.

With a price-payable of almost $2,000 more than the Dodge Durango, the Toyota has been armed with 1,200 lbs lower towing prowess in its 4Runner. This gets even with a 320 lbs better payload capacity in the latter at the same time. Calling off the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the contingency remains somewhat replicated as that of the Durango with only 417 lbs payload deficit.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

"It offers a bouncy ride, poor fuel economy, and lackluster acceleration." - True Car

Capable of offering only 17 MPG on average and 19 MPG at its peak, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is no different from its predecessor in this category. The hugely impacts its overall range reach as the mark does not cross 400 miles and confines to 391 miles only.

Having a range practicality index higher than the Toyota 4Runner by more than 100 miles, both Grand Cherokee and Durango cruise in ease against their Toyota rival. The Honda Passport also runs for extra 30 miles in comparison to the 4Runner with its 5 MPG better economy and 3.5-gallon smaller fuel tank.

Interior
7.5/10

"Ride quality is bumpy and stiff." - AutoTrader

The interior cosmos of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner gravitates all formats, be it fabric surfaces and SofTex trim in Sand Beige and Black/Graphite accent as per configuration. The perforated leather upholstery is stitched as well on the seats for its Limited edition along with exclusive TRD red lettering on driver and front passenger headrests for the TRD Off-Road Premium.

The comfort index of the Toyota 4Runner shakes off gloominess when the SR5 packs heated front seats and the Limited variant adjusts for the added ventilated functions. From the cargo perspective, a sale of 47.2-89.7 cu-ft comes as inherent for all that keeps you load as much as you wish. Also, if one calls for the third row seating and that too with SofTex layout, an investment of $1,085 stands imminent.

Plotting the numbers directs towards the 6.7-inch better legroom in the 2nd row and 3.5 cu-ft larger cargo volume inside the Honda Passport than the 4Runner. The Durango and Cherokee have also more than 5-inch larger legroom in the back than the Toyota's badge. In the meantime, the 2022 4Runner incorporates an 8-inch audio touchscreen with advanced voice recognition as its standard infotainment playbox.

Get in the SR5 Premium and a Dynamic Navigation beside the Premium Audio awaits to ooze you. It also casts Premium Audio with 15 JBL Speakers and Audio Plus on the inside for the Limited and TRD Off-Road respectively for musical tunes. Moreover, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility can also be found to use and abuse for no additional expenses. Some of the notable interior features have been mentioned:

Exterior
6.0/10

"While some might claim that the 4Runner looks pretty dated, its chunky aesthetic is actually kind of retro-chic." - CarBuzz

Polished in more than 8 exterior colors including the Lime Rush for the TRD Pro and other trim generic Army Green & Lunar Rock, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner looks poised. However, there is no style statement as such to attract your eyeballs as the LED HighBeam headlights and fog lights are simply tainted for modern times.

Dashing on its 17-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels, the Toyota 4Runner does have a mood swing between its all season and all terrain tires as its trim changes. Ask for more and Toyota brings in TRD Pro Roof Rack for a cost of $699 and Rock Rail at $575 to attach with the 4Runner for enhanced utility altogether.

Talking off the dimensions and a 0.6-inch higher ground clearance of the 4Runner than the Grand Cherokee is highlighted on spot. With such variation, the travel through off-road tracks gets easier for the former. Honda Passport settles with the same ride height lack but this time gap increases up to 1.5 inches, resulting in far better maneuvering.

Safety
8.7/10

"Mediocre safety ratings evidence the 4Runner's age."- Motor Trend

Though the NHTSA has not been crash tested the 2022 Toyota 4Runner yet, the IIHS marks it with a "Good" rating in almost all the parameters. Furthermore, its reinforced body-on-frame construction has been deluged with myriads of safety features in the Toyota Safety Sense and Star Safety System including the below mentioned:

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Post Collision Safety System
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Electronic Brake Force Distribution

Competition

2022 Toyota 4Runner vs 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner and the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee have been engineered with balanced powertrains as Toyota has a higher payload while the Jeep gets better towing. Seeking for range reach richness, the Grand Cherokee comes out to be more reliable with better seating arrangement on the whole. And, in the end, Jeep turns the tide towards itself with a more appealing philosophy alongside other aforementioned benefits.

2022 Toyota 4Runner vs 2022 Dodge Durango

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner feels a little more cramped in the rear row than the 2022 Dodge Durango but has got better cargo volume. Something similar happens in the powertrain domain too as the 4Runner breaths out way earlier than the Durango despite having lower towing capacity but with superior payload. As per this holistic outlook, Durango offers a better value proposition altogether.

2022 Toyota 4Runner vs 2022 Honda Passport

With the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, one has his/her powertrain throttle on the upper hand against the 2022 Honda Passport. Easily a more potent hauler and towing beast than the Passport, the 4Runner boost takes a toll on its range coverage. Not just, the seating organization could have also been improved inside the Toyota's cabin for the 2022 model year. As far as off-roading is concerned, the 4Runner has a clear advantage over Honda Passport. Hence, Toyota beats Honda in this segment.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner has the presence of being a worthy off-roader but it surely lacks the other keynotes of this segment. Right from seating comfort to styling persona to towing skills, there is a lot to improve in this aging animal. Hence, it does not get our recommendation over its peers.
