About 2022 Toyota Avalon

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Avalon is expected to be priced close to the existing range of the 2021 Avalon, between $35,875 to $42,575. The car will come with an option between a front-wheel drive and an All-wheel drive train. As there are less rivals in this limited segment, the car will compete directly with the 2022 Chrysler 300 and the 2022 Nissan Maxima. The data used in this review is based on last year’s data, as all the three cars are carryover models and not completely new.

The 2022 Avalon is a great large sedan because it offers the best value and quality in the class. Though Toyota is expected to refresh the Avalon with redesigned front-end styling, the prices will be similar to the current model starting from $36,125. For large families, Avalon has outstanding passenger and cargo space, high safety and reliability ratings, and an available long list of features. The customer reviews have always been positive, be it for the looks inside or the low cost of ownership. Inside, the material quality is top-notch while the technology features are plenty and user-friendly.

The standard V6 engine is peppy and the Avalon manages one of the best EPA fuel economy ratings in the class. Toyota made the 2021 Avalon even more competitive by introducing an all-wheel drive paired with a new four-cylinder engine. The 2022 Avalon is expected to feature similar trim levels including XLE, XSE, Limited, and Touring. Introduced in 2020, a more sporty TRD trim (reviewed separately) will continue with the same V6 powertrain but with distinct styling and a sport-tuned suspension setup. In the price segment, the Avalon competes with the likes of Nissan Maxima, VW Arteon, and Chrysler 300.

The Avalon is a loaded car right from the base trims. But it is important to remember that luxury also plays an important role in the development of an Avalon for this segment. Based on this idea, we recommend the Limited trim of the Avalon. It has the most significant luxury features that are not just some color options, and actually make an impact on the interior feel. The car also comes with impressive safety features as well, making it a complete package.

2022 Toyota Avalon Review

Pros

  • Best design language and upscale interiors
  • Most comfortable ride for covering long distances
  • Impressive standard feature list
  • Powerful Standard V6 Engine

Cons

  • Pricing is above-average in the segement

The 2022 Avalon is expected to be priced close to the existing range of the 2021 Avalon, between $35,875 to $42,575. The car will come with an option between a front-wheel drive and an All-wheel drive train. The data used in this review is based on last year’s data, as all the three cars are carryover models and not completely new.

Overview

The 2022 Avalon is a great large sedan because it offers the best value and quality in the class. Though Toyota is expected to refresh the Avalon with redesigned front-end styling, the prices will be similar to the current model starting from $36,125. In the price segment, the Avalon competes with the likes of Nissan Maxima, VW Arteon, and Chrysler 300.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Avalon will be available in the same five trim levels as the current 2021 model, including XLE, XSE Nightshade, Limited, Touring, and TRD. The pricing will start at $36,125 for the base XLE variant. The entry-level Avalon has a standard V6 and lot of features, so the above-average starting price seems justified. The XSE Nightshade trim is a more stylish version of the Avalon and comes with a distinct black exterior appearance along with bigger wheels. Opting for the All-wheel drive train on the XLE and Limited trims gets a powerful 2.5L I-4 engine. Below are the prices and configurations of 2022 Avalon:

The Limited and Touring trims are more luxurious options in the Avalon lineup and have some major differences. The Limited trim starts from $42,425 and comes with a more luxurious and feature-rich interior while the Touring trim which costs $42,825 has an overall more sporty look compared to the Limited along with the sports-tuned suspension setup. It also gets a fake exhaust note in order to make it sound more sporty. The Limited trim gets leather-covered seats whereas the Touring comes with SofTex trimmed upholstery.

The top-end TRD trim (reviewed separately) is expected to start at around $43,575 and comes with no powertrain or performance improvements other than the TRD track-tuned suspension and bigger brakes. It majorly has an aerodynamic body kit, lightweight 19-inch wheels, and other unique exterior and interior TRD touches.

Buying Advice

The Avalon is a loaded car right from the base trims. But it is important to remember that luxury also plays an important role in the development of an Avalon for this segment. Based on this idea, we recommend the Limited trim of the Avalon. It has the most significant luxury features that are not just some color options, and actually make an impact on the interior feel. The car also comes with impressive safety features as well, making it a complete package.

Here are the key changes for the Toyota Avalon over the last few years:

  • 2017: Gains several standard safety features such as adaptive cruise control
  • 2018: no major changes
  • 2019: Start of the fully redesigned fifth-generation model. Gains more horsepower, better fuel economy, a larger trunk capacity, and more available and standard infotainment and safety features
  • 2020: Introduced new TRD trim to the lineup.
  • 2021: Adds standard Android Auto. Additionally, Toyota introduced optional all-wheel drive paired with a four-cylinder engine. Black accented XSE Nightshade trim introduced

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 2022 Toyota Avalon continues to make use of the standard 3.5L V6 engine as the current model. This V6 engine produces a healthy power output of 301 hp and a torque output of 267 lb.-ft. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels. The newly added 2.5L four-cylinder engine is available only on the AWD variants i.e. XLE and Limited trims. The smaller engine is rated at 205 hp and 186 lb.-ft while the transmission remains the same. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The V6 is powerful and has proven to be a great mill for both casual city driving as well as long cruises on the highway. The V6 powered Avalon accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds and does the quarter-mile in impressive 14.6 seconds. This Toyota's large sedan has impressive driving dynamics with a comfortable ride. The XSE Nightshade trim with the sports tuned suspension setup offers better handling over the base XLE trim.

It gets even better in the Touring trim which gets a sport-tuned adaptive suspension setup. However, the track-tuned suspension setup in the TRD trim is quite a lot stiff and that affects ride quality in day-to-day driving conditions. All trims except ‘Touring’ come with three drive modes which are ECO, Normal, and Sport while only the Touring trim gets an extra Sports+ mode. The Avalon’s dimensions do give a doubtful opinion of its ride character, but the high feedback from the steering to the driver at high speeds and even at low speed inspires confidence. Just like last year, the 2022 Avalon continues to be one of the best daily drivers.

Among the rivals, the Toyota Avalon makes the most power and the most torque with the standard engine under the hood. However, the difference in power is down to only one horsepower.  The Chrysler 300’s torque kicks in the last among the three cars. Overall, the Avalon makes a balanced ratio between its price and power. For a car that weighs about 3500-pounds, the 2022 Avalon’s acceleration is impressive. In terms of braking performance, the car stops from 60-0 mph in 115 feet which is pretty quick. Surprisingly, the Chrysler manages the least 0-60 mph time at 5.3 seconds. It is also the only car with a quarter-mile time under 14 seconds. The 300 also has the highest top speed.

Comparatively, even though the Toyota has the most economy, its range suffers thanks to the small fuel capacity. The Toyota Avalon’s range stands at a mere 377 miles combined. The Maxima has an 18-gallon tank that gives it a combined range of 432 miles. The Chrysler has a range of 425 miles with an 18.5-gallon tank. The most highway range is offered by the 300 at 555 miles. The Maxima offers the most city range at 360 miles.

Interior
7.5/10

The 2022 Avalon’s interior offers immense space, utmost comfort, and all the desired technology features. With no change in the interior, the Avalon features a classy and high-quality cabin and superb quality materials and elements all around it. All trims come with dual-zone automatic climate control as well as a leather-trimmed steering wheel. The base XLE trim gets SofTex trimmed seats with 8-way power adjustability. The driver seat further gets 2-way power lumbar support, while the front seats also get heating functionality.  The wood trims on the inside, with a lot of soft plastics, used made the Avalon’s interior and the stitching touches gave the interior a premium-ness to it, which was close to its Lexus sibling.

Moving onto the XSE Nightshade, and Touring trims, you will get SofTex-trimmed seats with perforation and Ultrasuede detailing while the Limited trim features premium leather-trimmed seats. The Limited trim comes with a genuine wood interior trim differentiating itself from the rest. The layout of the central console, swooping into the central storage area looked good and had a futuristic appeal to it. All in all, the interior of the Avalon does not fail to impress.

In terms of space, the Avalon offers best-in-class legroom in both the row. It also comes with a decent cargo area measuring 16.1 cu-ft which can accommodate enough luggage for a long trip. The higher-end trims also come with Active Noise Control (ANC) and Engine Sound Enhancement (ESE) along with ambient interior lighting. There is a lot of small storage space available on the Avalon as well. The central console houses a few storage sections along with cupholders and a place to wirelessly charge your phone as well. The doors house large pockets and the central armrest in the rear also serves a purpose with its cup holders.

The Chrysler has smaller proportions when compared to these two, but it has the most cargo space on offer at 16.3 cubic feet. The Avalon is just behind at 16.1 cubic feet, and the Maxima offers the least at 14.3 cubic feet. Some of the interior features on the Avalon include:

  • Heated and power-adjustable front seats
  • Push-button start
  • Wireless charging station
  • Wood interior trim
  • Ambient lighting
  • Microsuede front seat inserts

2022 Toyota Avalon Infotainment unit

The 2022 Avalon’s infotainment unit might receive an update in terms of additional features. The current Avalon infotainment system offers a 9-inch touchscreen that has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Alexa connectivity, navigation, and four USB ports. Other standard equipment such as Bluetooth, HD Radio, Sirius XM, etc is available as well.

There is the standard 8-speaker audio system on the basic trim, but the higher trims will get the powerful 14-speaker JBL system. We expect a better sound quality this year and a more improved and responsive touch interface over the 2021 model. Standard Infotainment features include:

  • 9-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Navigation
  • USB 3.0 Connectivity

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2022 Avalon’s exterior will see some slight revisions to the front, in and around the grille, and headlights area. There might be slight changes to the rear as well. The design is expected to follow the conventional sedan styling with an infusion of modern styling all around the car. The existing design of the Avalon sports a low-roofline, a streamlined body, and a unique rear fascia.

The aerodynamic kit on offer with the summer tires and the sporty exhaust gives the Avalon a sporty exterior and it does impress. The Nightshade edition’s all blacked out exterior adds a very executive charm to the Avalon. There are a lot of alloy options, with and without chrome finishes.

Safety
9.3/10

The Avalon will have the same structure for the model year 2022 as well, so we expect the same safety ratings as well. The 2021 Avalon was rated 5-stars by the NHTSA. The IIHS also rated the Avalon an overall score of “Good” for the model year 2021. With high safety and reliability, the Avalon is among the safest full-size sedans in the market.

Toyota has equipped the Avalon with a lot of active and passive safety features. In terms of safety equipment, the Avalon includes traction control, stability control, antilocking brake system, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, and radar cruise control. All Avalon trims come standard with the Standard Toyota Safety Sense system. The bird’s eye view camera with perimeter scan function is expected to be standard on the higher trims of the 2022 Avalon. Some safety features on the car are:

  • Rear Cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Energy-absorbing collapsible steering column
  • Radar Cruise Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitor

Competition

2022 Avalon vs 2022 Nissan Maxima

The Maxima is the rival that goes head-to-head with the Avalon. Not only does the Maxima come very close in terms of features, safety equipment and comfort, but it actually leaves the Avalon behind in terms of performance. The Maxima can be the right car for you if some fast runs are on your mind apart from a family drive.

However, with that being said, both the cars are due for some refresh for the 2022 model, which will bring along minor changes here and there. The Nissan Maxima cannot match up to the Avalon’s reliability and durability, which is a strong point of most Toyota cars. The Avalon is better in terms of economy as well, but the Maxima offers a better range.

2022 Avalon vs 2022 Chrysler 300

The Chrysler does offer a much richer performance over the Avalon; but it’s important to note that both of these car appeal to different set of customers. The Avalon leans more towards a family car, whereas the Chrysler is more of an executive speedster. The Chrysler falls behind in reliability as well, and the fuel economy is not that great as well. The Chrysler does however, have a really wide fuel range.

The Chrysler 300 has remained unchanged for such a long time, the 2022 model might see the major upgrade the car terribly needs. Although this is all speculation, and many sources hint at the 2022 model receiving just minor changes over the 2021 model. If that is the case, the Avalon will seep the Chrysler in every factor.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Avalon continues on the path it has been since its upgrade: a path that is made by the collective work of a unique exterior, premium interior, a comfortable and smooth ride, an efficient engine, and undeniable reliability and durability of a Toyota. The car gets some minor changes here and there, but it is all a part of better deliverance from Toyota to its existing and new customers. It delivers on all those terms it has to and does this in style. Of course, the engine can use a bit more oomph, and the pricing can be a bit more aggressive: in the end, it’s the car worth picking up.
