Overall Rating
The 2022 model is expected to start at around an MSRP of $30,000 and it will feature the new 2.4-liter horizontally opposed engine under the hood producing around 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The Toyota 86 enters into its second generation with the 2022 model year and is now called the GR86. With this generation, the specs have improved as it comes with more power now making 228 hp from a 2.4L flat-4 engine replacing the 2.0L Flat-4 found in the previous generation. The engine continues to get the options of manual transmission and automatic transmission with power going to the RWD drivetrain.
Performance of the GR86 has also improved with a 0-60 time now of 6.1 seconds. The interior comes with Alcantara and leather and also a new infotainment system. The GR86 will be available in two trims GR 86 and GR 86 Premium with prices expected to start at $29,000. This brings this into direct competition with the Chevrolet Camaro, BMW 2-Series, and Mazda MX-5 Miata RF.
We would recommend you to go for the “GT trim” as it adds a lot of advanced convenience and safety features over the Base trim. It adds features such as heated front seats, keyless entry, and automatic climate control.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 or Toyota 86 as more popularly known is coming as an all-new model starting a new generation from the 2022 model year onwards. Toyota will offer 2022 86 in two trims - GR 86 and GR 86 Premium, replacing the 86 and GT trims from the 2021 model year. Toyota will announce the prices later in the year but we expect it to start around $29,000.
Powering the 2022 Toyota 86 is a 2.4L boxer engine and comes with a manual transmission as standard and the option of a 6-speed automatic which we expect will increase the price by $1,200 like the previous model. The GR 86 Premium trim comes with a bit more track focus with the help of a duckbill spoiler and 18-wheels with sticky sport tires.

Toyota has addressed our principal complaint with the last generation and has given the GR 86 more horsepower for 2022 - Car And Driver
The 2022 Toyota GR 86 comes with a new powertrain - a 2.4 liter flat-4 making 228 hp which replaces the 2.0L flat-4 making 205 hp in the 2021 model. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission that will direct all the power to the rear wheels. There is also the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 GR 86 get its chassis tuned from Toyota's "Gazoo Racing" to focus on track work as well and gets 3 drive modes - Normal, Sport, and Track, and that's why you have the GR name on it. In terms of performance, the new engine reduces the 0-60 time to 6.1-seconds from 7.0 seconds of the previous generation with the manual and 6.6 seconds from 8.0 seconds with the Automatic.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 does not have an EPA estimated Fuel Economy. But it is an all-new model with a new more powerful engine, we do expect it to have similar numbers to the 2021 model, most probably with give 1 mpg lesser. The 2021 Toyota 86 offers a combined 24 mpg with the manual and a combined 27 mpg with the automatic transmission.

The 2021 Toyota 86 has a 13.2-gallon tank and we expect a similar capacity to it. In comparison, we do expect the fuel economy to be more than the Chevrolet Camaro and be able to give a better driving range than the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF which has a combined driving range of 345 miles.

To show off how sporty the interior of the 2022 Toyota GR86 is, Toyota has included Alcantara upholstery with black leather accents on the deep bucket design seats with side bolsters. The touchpoints for the driver are leather upholstered to give a premium feel and there are silver interior accents to highlight the interior.
Like the previous generation's interior, the 2022 GR86 continues to offer the same 2+2 interior configuration. However, as we do expect the rear seats to have a bit more legroom than the previous model. The interior is expected to continue to offer dual-zone automatic air-conditioning. The previous-generation Toyota 86 offered 6.9 cu.ft. of cargo space, we do not expect it to change much.

Compared to the competition, we do expect similar interior dimensions to the BMW 2 series which also comes with the most cargo capacity as well. In terms of infotainment, the 2022 GR 86 comes with a bigger 8-inch touchscreen as stnadard and is an improvement as the previous model offered a 7-inch touchscreen.
The infotainment system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is capable of NFC pairing, SiriusXM three-month all-access trial subscription, and available Connected services. A 6-speaker sound system will be standard and the GR86 Premium trim will get an 8-speaker sound system. There is also a 7-inch digital cluster that will offer different information layout for each drive mode.

In terms of the dimensions, the Toyota GR86 is expected to be wider than the previous model but not by much we expect it to be wider by an inch or two. However, Toyota has confirmed that the GR86 will weigh just over 2800 pounds, which is a similar weight to the previous model but is only heavier than the MX-5.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 has not yet been crash-tested by the NHSTA. The IIHS, like the NHTSA, has also not yet crash-tested the 2022 GR86. The previous-generation 86 did not complete NHTSA testing having scored 4-stars in the side impact test and 5-stars in the rollover test.
The GR86 comes well equipped with Toyota's Star safety system which includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, and Brake Assist. 2022 Toyota GR86 Coupe vs 2021 BMW 2-Series
The BMW 2-series does come with more power and better performance. However, being a BMW the finishings are going to be better and also increase its weight a bit. But the GR86 will come with its own tuning givng its own unique driving dynamic. The BMW 2-Series is priced higher than the GR86 and is a good option in comparison to it.
The Chevrolet Camaro does make more power and comes with better performance as well. The Camaro being a muscle car comes with more space as well as being larger in dimensions than the GR86. However, the new GR86 is track-focused but GR86 also costs more, making the Camaro a good option.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata comes with lesser power and also marginally lesser performance. It will also come with seating for two occupants and thanks to the foldable hardtop roof it offers very little space in the trunk. The Mazda MX-5 is also priced higher than the GR86 making it a good option.
The 2022 Toyota GR86 is an all-new model and starts the second generation. This comes with an improved engine and sportier dynamics thanks to Gazoo Racing tuning the vehicle it comes with its own unique driving dynamic and also making the GR86 track-ready as well.
