How well does the 2022 Toyota Mirai handle?

Toyota doesn’t boast the Mirai to be fast like the expensive and premium electric cars. However, its pride lies in how comfortably the Mirai drives and how pleasant the driving dynamics are. The Mirai does an excellent job when it comes to driving dynamics and handling. The steering feels well weighted, smooth, and responsive. It is fun to drive a car in the cities. The precise steering spices up the driving experience. 

Despite being over 4200 pounds, the Mirai does a good job while taking sharp turns and corners. Body rolls are less and easily manageable. The chassis comes fitted with multi-link front and rear suspensions that soak up bumps well and offer a comfortable ride. The cabin comes installed with active noise cancellation. Hence, the cabin is quiet, and being seated inside motivates peace of mind.

Braking Performance

All the wheels of the 2022 Mirai come fitted with ventilated disc brakes. The front comes fitted with 14” ventilated discs while the rear wheels are installed with 13.1” discs. On the other hand, the Honda Clarity trails with lower mileage. Though its fuel tank is similar to that of the Mirai, the lower MPG numbers cause it to stay behind the Mirai in mileage and range.

The cabin of the 2022 Mirai is an amazing place to sit. It's premium, sleek, comfortable, and stuffed with a heap of features. Entering the cabin is easy and hassle-free. The cabin allows a seating capacity for 5 people and the amount of space provided to the passengers is impressive. After looking at the sloping exterior, we are impressed with the amount of headspace the cabin offers.

The front comes fitted with an 8” color driver’s display, leather-trimmed steering wheel with mounted controls, Dual or triple-zone automatic AC, and the updated infotainment system. For seating, the front offers a couple of 8-way power-adjustable front bucket seats. The front seats also provide memory function, heating, and ventilation functions. The front seats are well placed and allow a panoramic view of the road to the front passengers. The rear seats are opposite, they are more padded, wide, and restful. But, the rear seats don’t allow a folding option for additional cargo space. At the back, the Mirai offers a small 9.6 cu-ft. trunk which can be used to store 2-3 bags and luggage.

The Honda Clarity’s cabin is spacious and offers better passenger space to the occupants. It offers a larger cargo trunk that can additionally accommodate a couple of suitcases more. However, if you are looking for opulence, Mirai’s cabin offers you the cookie. The cabin is sleek, modern and the quality of materials is top-notch. Both the cabins shine in their respective areas. Once shine because of comfort and space. The other justifies with better comforts, features, and tech.

The UI runs smoothly and is easy to operate and understand. 

Other features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth services for smartphone integration. Other features include SiriusXM, Wi-Fi hotspot, dynamic navigation, voice recognition, and others. Color head-up display, Qi-compatible smartphone charging, USB ports for media storage, and fast charging are also offered.

The Mirai underwent a complete exterior makeover last year with the introduction of the 2nd generation. Quite frankly, this was much needed. When we first saw the Mirai we mistook it for a Lexus. The fascia looks almost like the Lexus ES series and you can’t spot the difference from a distance. The fascia comes fitted with sharp obtuse triangle-shaped LED headlights that house inside a couple of bi-beam auto-leveling LED headlights and DRLS. Between them, a wide satin-black trimmed comes fitted that makes the fascia look premium. The hood above doesn’t flaunt excess body lines but looks well fitted. The rear comes fitted with LED taillamps further complimented by rear combination lights.

The exterior of the Mirai is sleek and charming. The long hood and sweeping roofline make its exterior look premium. The 4-door design impressed us, the well-designed square-shaped doors and shorter rear deck with an integrated spoiler blessed the rear with a coupe-like design. Further with the visible body lines and rear bumper, the rear part of Mirai’s exterior looks mean and futuristic. A standard fitted 19” wheels come standard fitted on both the trims. However, you can fit the car with optional 20” aluminum wheels.

The Honda Clarity is lighter and smaller than the Toyota Mirai. Its curb weight is lesser and the body dimensions are smaller. Its lighter and smaller body makes it easily controllable and suitable in city conditions. Parking in tight spots is easier and trouble-free. Being based on a smaller wheelbase, it offers responsive handling but at the cost of cabin discomfort. On the other hand, the Mirai offers better driving dynamics. Its stability on the highways and maneuvering is praiseworthy. The bigger wheelbase makes the ride pleasant and noise-free. Its higher ground clearance offers it better freedom to tread anywhere without any worries.

2022 Toyota Mirai vs 2022 Honda Clarity

The 2022 Toyota Mirai cost $8000 less than the Honda Clarity. Despite being cheaper it stays ahead with better attributes. Mirai’s powertrain offers better power and torque. Hence, it is faster and offers better driving dynamics. The handling is delightful and the engine feels creamy. The fascia of the Mirai looks Lexus inspired and frankly, we love it. The cabin inside offers less space than that of the Clarity’s, but the space offered is adequate. Moreover, the Mirai’s cabin looks futuristic, composed of top-notch materials, and offers a load of features and comforts. Henceforth, the Mirai is not only cheap but a pragmatic choice too.

The Toyota Mirai is one of the pioneers of Hydrogen-powered cars. The cabin inside is plushy, comfortable, and loaded with features. However, its 2022 and Hydrogen-powered cars are not yet a trend. Should you buy it? The answer is No! There are many reasons behind it. Firstly, the Hydrogen fuel stations are presently available in California only and the expected number of fueling stations are 69 by the end of 2021. Secondly, the pricing seems too high. You can buy a Lexus RC for this price that offers massive power, bold looks, a premium cabin, and plenty of features. Thirdly, the resale value is unyielding.
