2022 Toyota Prius hybrid Review

Pros

  • Affordable price tag
  • Comfortable and smooth ride
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Quiet cabin
  • Available All-Wheel-Drive

Cons

  • Lackluster acceleration
  • Cabin materials feel sub-par at some places
  • Dated infotainment setup

With a starting MSRP of $24,525, the 2022 Toyota Prius carries over itself from its predecessor with familiar specifications. The only change is the new "Nightshade Edition" nomenclature for the previous "2020 Edition" model.

Overview

Amid severe speculations of being discontinued, the 2022 Toyota Prius is out in the market for yet another year. While reports of a refreshed 2023 Toyota Prius are doing rounds on the internet, the 2021 model remains a carryover from its predecessor. There is a new “Nightshade Edition” in the 2022 Prius lineup but is basically last year’s “2020 Edition” with a new name. Prices for the 2022 Prius start from $24,525.

Despite being rather consistent for a long time now, the Prius continues to delight you with its comfortable ride quality, impressive economy and a healthy spec-sheet. At a humble starting MSRP of $24,525, which also includes destination charges, the 2022 Prius still stays strong and competitive in its segment. However, with more updated rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq and Honda Insight, the Prius does face some hard time in its league.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The Toyota Prius has been the most popular hybrid car on the market for decades, and it isn't hard to see why? - Kelley Blue Book

Available in five trim levels as usual, the 2022 Toyota Prius starts at an MSRP of $24,525 for the base “L Eco” model. Moving up to the top order “Limited” would need you to shell out $32,650. Although there is a new “Nightshade Edition” for 2022 sitting between the “XLE” and Limited models, it's nothing but a renamed “2020 Edition” introduced last year.

As standard, all 2022 Prius Hybrid models come with a single 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain mated to a CVT transmission. While FWD is standard the Prius is the only hybrid to offer an e-AWD which is available with the LE and XLE models. In terms of value and pricing, the 2020 Prius still packs a host of standard fitment alongside Toyota’s healthy suite of modern safety tech.

Buying Advice

Among its five available trim levels, our pick of the bunch is the mid-tier XLE trim. The 2022 Toyota Prius XLE is relatively priced at an MSRP of $28,745, including destination, gets you most of the features that you would seek for as a daily commuter. Moreover, with an extra $830, you can also pair the Prius XLE with the available e-AWD.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

The Toyota Prius handles with composure and mostly maintains a good ride quality. While you can't drive it as spiritedly as some other, more athletic small cars, the Prius feels stable and planted through turns. - Cars. U.S News

Under the hood, the 2022 Toyota Prius carries forward its familiar 1.8-liter inline-4 engine paired with two electric motors. The hybrid setup continues to pop out a paltry 121 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. Mated with an e-CVT transmission, the powertrain feels smooth and clutter-free in city commuting. However, in no time does the humble powertrain expose its limitations in the higher mid-range.

Although power comes in quickly down the lower-rev range, the 2022 Toyota Prius clocks from 0-60 MPH in 9.8 seconds. No wonders here since the other rivals are as leisurely as the Toyota Prius. Talking rivals, the Hyundai Ioniq offers the most power while its Kia sibling is the quickest of the bunch. The Kia Niro Hybrid sprints from 0-60 MPH in a respectable 8.5 seconds.

Performance apart, the Prius hybrid doesn't really impress with its on-road manners either. However, the ride feels mostly smooth and compliant at city speeds with good tranquility as well. The overall aerodynamics offer good weight distribution and the suspension soaks undulations with ease. The steering wheel is not very talkative but does offer easy maneuverability.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2022 Toyota Prius is no longer at the technology leading edge, but it provides all the right numbers for cost-conscious commuters.- The Car Connection

An impressive fuel economy has been the core USP of the Toyota Prius and it remains so even with its 2022 model. It may look old-school and dated, it still offers a handsome 56 MPG combined fuel economy to frugal-minded commuters. Coupled with a decently sized fuel tank, the Prius also offers an impressive 633 miles of combined driving range.

Compared against its more efficient and advanced rivals today, the 2022 Prius hybrid still offers a very promising fuel economy. Rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq do edge past over the Toyota here, in terms of efficiency, but only by a small margin. Where its rivals truly shine though, is with their better perofrmance and engagement while being as economical as the Prius hybrid.

Interior
7.5/10

Passengers have plenty of room to spread out in the Prius-there's space for four six footers thanks to upright seating.- Car and Driver

With no changes on board, the interior of the 2022 Toyota Prius hybrid remains a familiar abode. Not the most attractive for sure, but it does have a clean interior layout with plenty of space on offer. Although you mostly encounter hard-plasticky surfaces on the inside, the available black theme adds a good ambiance inside. The wide and curvy dashboard with the instrument panel at the center still remains a major highlight which may not appeal to a wider audience.

In terms of seating, the Prius gets manual seats with cloth upholstery as standard. The seats are wide and comfortable and the higher models also get you simulated leather upholstery with heated front seats. A power-adjustable driver's seat is also available in the XLE and above models. Taller passengers are greeted with ample space at the front, but tighter rear-seat legroom may be a concern for some. Thankfully, its class-leading 27.4 cu-ft of cargo space is a handy compensation.

As in its predecessor, the 2022 Toyota Prius hybrid comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment as standard. The system also comes bundled with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa support. The range-topping "Limited" model gets an updated 11.6-inch screen with a 10-speaker JBL premium audio. Although the infotainment has a clean interface, it's let down by its ho-hum visibility and delayed responses at times. We hope Toyota dresses that too with an update soon.

  • Power adjustable and heated front seats
  • Multifunction steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • 7-inch / 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • 10-speaker JBL premium audio

5.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Prius faces the wind confidently and that's about it. - The Car Connection

Even on the outside, the 2022 Toyota Prius hybrid carries forward its consistent silhouette. Yes, you still get that angular yet distinct front end with a liftback side-profile which makes it instantly identifiable. However, the Prius has been following this design since decades now where its sharper rivals flash their sleek and trendy outfits. The Prius is desperately looking for an update here.

As standard, the Prius comes with 15-inch wheels, heated mirrors and LED headlights. 17-inch wheels and adaptive headlights are also available in the higher models. For 2022, Toyota also renames the previously available “2020 Edition” as “Nightshade Edition” The latter remains the same as the former in terms of fitment with unique black alloy wheels and black exterior elements.

In terms of overall forma factor and design, the Toyota Prius hybrid completely stands out from its rivals. The Kia Niro and Honda Insight represent the compact SUV and sedan segments respectively, the Hyundai Ioniq has a similar styling to the Prius. However, the Ioniq seems better proportioned and more curvy and edgier than the Prius. Footprints remain almost the same on each of these rivals though.

Safety
9.3/10

With Toyota, comes an unparalleled promise of safety and reliability and the Prius is no different. Thanks to its 2021 update, the 2022 Prius also gets Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 as standard which brings in features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning, and more. Toyota Prius Hybrid Vs Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

The Hyundai Ioniq is the closest rival to the Prius here. Thanks to its similar liftback design as the Prius. However, the former seems more angular, well-proportioned and more premium than the Toyota offering. Also, the Ioniq is slightly more efficient, has more power and also feels more connected on the move. On the inside, the Ioniq gains points again with its modern and attractive cabin layout. While the Hyundai also has better rear-seat legroom, the Prius offers better overall space. The Prius is also more practical with a larger boot and is also more comfortable on the go.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Vs Honda Insight Hybrid

Compared to the rather funky Prius, the Honda Insight looks like an elegant sedan drawing inspirations from the Honda Accord. It looks appealing, is more comfortable and athletic on the move and has a far more attractive cabin layout than the Prius. With its enhanced ergonomics, the Insight is also more comfortable on the move along with more power and quicker than the Prius as well. However, the Prius aces ahead in the competition here with its better economy, quiet cabin, better overall cabin space and a larger cargo area as well.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Vs Kia Niro Hybrid

Compared to the Prius Hybrid, the Kia Niro looks and feels class apart. Unlike Toyota's liftback profile, the Niro has a more appealing yet premium crossover design with upscale and attractive fit and finish on the inside as well. The Niro Hybrid is more powerful than the Prius and is one of the quickest cars in its segment. For a fuel efficient modern crossover, the Niro also offers a good balance of comfort and handling. Though the Niro is not as efficient as the Prius, it compensates that with better space inside its cabin. However, the Prius offers a significantly better cargo capacity than the Niro.

Final Verdict

For those looking for an efficient and reliable hybrid car for daily commuting, the 2022 Toyota Prius still has plenty to offer. Its affordable with a low cost of ownership, delivers impressive mpg figures and above all, offers class-leading safety and reliability. However, if you are not a big fan of its styling, the Hyundai Ioniq and Honda Insight are options, worth considering too.
