It's been a long time coming but the Tundra finally takes a leap forward with improved looks and technology- Cnet

The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra comes in five trims namely SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro. Toyota recently announced that a new Capstone trim is on its way and it is the top-most luxury trim of the Tundra. The 2022 Tundra's sale price begins from $42,805 while the TRD Pro and Capstone variants are not priced yet. Both RWD and 4WD configurations are offered.

The CrewMax cab is offered with either a 5.5-footed or a 6.5-foot cargo bed. Buyers will be impressed with the long list of standard features, some of which are new. Toyota also introduced a few optional packages for features and off-road upgrades. The TRD Off-Road package includes skid plates, an off-road suspension, a locking rear differential, and a terrain select system.

Buying Advice

The Limited trim seems like a good deal in the lineup. This trim adds power-adjustable front seats with heard and ventilated functionality, a heated steering wheel, a 14-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. You can add a surround-view camera through the Limited PVM package as well.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2022 Tundra also is available with a potent gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain that produces copious amounts of torque- Kelly Blue Book

Toyota has dropped the V8 motor from its 2022 Tundra lineup and now offers two engine options for customers. The 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine makes 389 hp and 479 lb-ft. of torque, crazy numbers for a standard engine. Following Ford’s bold move last year with the F-150 hybrid, Toyota has introduced a new hybrid version of the Tundra as well. Named as the i-FORCE MAX, this all-new motor produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. of torque.

Both engines are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission that shifts seamlessly through gears. The Tundra's maximum towing capacity is rated at 12,000 lbs, which is decent. The Tundra gets a new coil-spring rear suspension, replacing the aging leaf springs. Therefore, the ride quality is much improved. Moreover, the Tundra is also available with an adaptive air suspension. Along with composed handling, some off-road gears are also available.

During city rides, the motor offers a quiet ride with improved efficiency while in low-speed EV mode. On the highway, linear power delivery is evident, and off-road driving gets better thanks to low RPM peak torque. The 0-60 MPH sprint is covered in 6.3 seconds. While the hybrid model was not tested, it is evident that its performance will be much better. Similarly, the Tundra's brakes are also strong and much responsive while in action.

The Ford F-150 is still the quickest truck among the lot despite making less power thanks to its low curb weight. But, its towing capacity is the lowest here. With just 310 horses on tap, the Chevy Silverado's acceleration is really good. The RAM 1500 eats the dust of its rivals due to its underpowered engine. The Tundra's hybrid powertrain is sure the gamechanger in this segment, after the F-150.

Fuel Economy

The Toyota Tundra stands out with its MPG figures in all the wrong ways- The Car Connection

The new V6 engine in the 2022 Toyota Tundra promises better fuel economy than the previous V8 though. The EPA revealed that the new Tundra returns 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined with the RWD drivetrain while the 4WD model's combined mileage drops by 1 MPG.

The hybrid V6 engine is not rated for its fuel consumption by the EPA as of this writing. The Tundra gets a small fuel tank sized at 22.5 gallons. Therefore, you can expect a maximum driving range of 450 miles in mixed proportions. That's less than the competition but the hybrid engine will get good mileage.

Currently, the F-150 has the best fuel estimates in this competition while the RAM 1500 is just a few miles behind. The Chevy Silverado's highway fuel ratings are less than its rivals but its large tank works out for delivering better range. The Tundra's fuel economy is still less than the competition but it has improved significantly.

Interior
8.0/10

The new interior is not only an improvement over the outgoing Tundra's but it also stands out among those of other full-size trucks- Motortrend

As soon as you get inside the 2022 Toyota Tundra, you can immediately tell that it's a new vehicle. There is no rehashing and everything seems modern and different. The build quality and interior layout are really mesmerizing but it still feels behind the RAM 1500 or the Ford F-150. Along with hard plastics, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces as well. You get a brand-new steering wheel design with big, clear buttons that continue over into the center console switchgear area.

The CrewMax cab seats up to five individuals while both cloth and leather upholsteries are available. The seats are soft and comfortable with decent under-thigh support for long journeys. The front seats come with premium features like power adjustability and heated and ventilated functions for both rows. Six-footers will enjoy sitting in the front row due to abundant headroom. The passenger space at the back is also really good for grown-up adults.

Two cargo beds i.e. 5.6 feet and 6.6 feet are available for CrewMax models. The cargo capacity is less than the competition but still decent for a pickup. You also get in-cabins storage behind the rear seats and under-seat compartments. The battery occupies this space in the hybrid models. One of the big bits of news is that Toyota upgraded its audio multimedia software that now features an all-new Human Machine Interface.

You get this software either in a condensed standard 8-inch touchscreen or a much larger 14-inch touchscreen. You can link to your smartphone through wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. CrewMax models come standard with a 9-speaker stereo while a 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional. The physical controls are easy to grab and clear icons make it easy to see what you're looking for. Some other features include:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable front seats w/ heated & ventilated functions

Exterior

The Tundra offers a far more rugged design than the current pickup- CNBC

The 2022 Toyota Tundra CrewMax has got a massive redesign in terms of exteriors. The Tundra now looks more muscular which is easily going to rival Ford’s F-150. The new big grille with beast-like headlights at the sides. a tall mountain-like hood, front bumper with a cutaway looks very conceptual and attractive. Compared to the previous-gen Tundra, curb weight has been reduced. That's because reinforced aluminum was used to keep the weight in check.

Even the tailgate is lighter by 20% over the last-gen model. From the side view, the squared wheel arches and stylish 18-inch wheels give a bold look to the vehicle. Trims like Platinum and 1794 Edition get premium aesthetics with chrome elements and 20-inch wheels. As for the rear design, the taillights got a little bit smaller but in a smart way. The TRD Sport package adds 20-inch TRD wheels, some TRD styling elements, and a lowered suspension exclusive to the SR5 trim.

The Chevy Silverado sits quite lower than the Tundra. So, getting in and out of the truck would probably be easy. Although the RAM 1500's wheelbase is the shortest, it sports the most spacious rear row among its rivals. The Ford F-150 weighs comparatively less at 4,616 pounds. This actually helps in its acceleration. Some other exterior features are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED fog lamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming, heated exterior mirrors
  • EX-Lift tailgate
  • Pickup bed light
  • Front & rear mudguards
  • 18/20-inch wheels

In terms of suspension, the Tundra features standard twin-tube shocks at the front and rear that feature triple-oil seals and extended dust covers for protection and durability. The rear also gets a new multi-link rear suspension, hence replacing the aging leaf springs of the past. The front gets a new double-wishbone suspension for enhanced high-speed stability.

The Tundra's suspension also features automatic and manual leveling functions and height modes for High, Low, and Normal. Also on offer is an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system that has been designed to adjust damping force based on changing road conditions.

Safety

Every Tundra is stocked with a full complement of driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

Both the IIHS and the NHTSA are yet to test the 2022 Toyota Tundra for its crashworthiness. Since it is completely redesigned, we cannot consider the safety ratings of the previous year's model. However, Toyota has assured that the Tundra is safer than before as its body structure features high-strength steel and reinforced aluminum for improved rigidity.

Toyota has made no compromises in decking up the 2022 Tundra with the latest safety features as standard. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite includes all the modern safety technologies that makes the pickup feel safe at all times. In addition, the eight airbags also assist in the safety of the passengers. Some other safety features include:

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Lane Tracing Assist
  • Head-Up Display
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Rearview Camera
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

2022 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2022 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

The Ford F-150 offers superior MPG figures and also comes with more interior space and a bit more modern style on the interior and exterior. Its maximum towing capacity is rated at 14,000 pounds, which is 2,000 pounds more than the Tundra. The F-150 is also available with a V8 while the Raptor is a more capable off-roading truck than the TRD Pro. However, the Tundra comes with unbeatable reliability and more standard features.

2022 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers good fuel economy figures and class-leading interior and cargo space. However, the Silverado isn't as potent as the Tundra mechanically and delivers slow acceleration but its towing capacity is greater. The Tundra has a good resale value as well and offers pleasing interiors too. It is also more off-road capable than the Silverado. So, as long as you are not bound by a sharp budget, it's better to choose the Tundra.

2022 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab

The RAM 1500 outclasses the Tundra in almost every aspect. Although its engine lineup misses a hybrid powertrain, the V8 is just fiery powerful. Its ride quality is also much better than the Tundra but its tow ratings stay behind. Inside, it has one of the nicest cabins in the segment while the rear row is the most spacious in the segment. The TRX variant offers more off-road features than the TRD Pro. Meanwhile, the Tundra comes with more standard features and better reliability.
