Overall Rating
A refreshed look and additional technology features will be found on the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, courtesy of the mid-year update it will be put through in 2021. Capable of now fitting in eight individuals in three rows, the prices for the same start from an expected MSRP of $33,000. All set for release in late 2021, the 2022 Atlas will be made available in the same 7 trim lineup.
With no major changes in the pipeline, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas follows in the footsteps of the 2021 Atlas as it receives no major changes from last year. The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is now on sale with a starting price of $33,475 as it comes standard with the 235 hp 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. VW, however, gives customers the option to upgrade to a 3.6L V6 that makes 276 hp and 266 lb-ft torque.
The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 5 trims: S, SE w/Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. The 4 Motion AWD system with active control is available on all the trims. The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas features plenty of interior space and standard features inside the cabin. The 2022 VW Atlas rivals the likes of the Honda Pilot, Chevy Traverse, and the Toyota Highlander.
The Atlas’ line-up can get quite confusing for many but if you’d ask us, we recommend the SE with Technology trim which provides the perfect balance of features and price, while also giving the buyer to choose from options like panoramic sunroof and captain's chairs in the second-row.

The Atlas has airy seating space, a vast cargo area, intuitive tech features, and composed handling, but it's hindered by apathetic engine performance, mediocre fuel economy, and down-market cabin materials. - U.S News
The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas drops the S trim, which used to be the entry point to the range, in favour of the SE which now acts as the base trim. That said, the SE is now among the seven trim levels on offer, each of which add some additional amenities and functions to make the Atlas a complete package.
All the trims, though, are powered by either a turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder engine that cranks out 235 horsepower or a 276 horsepower V6 which is even better in terms of refinement and power. The trim line-up of the Atlas might be confusing but we’ve sorted out the hierarchy in the table below:

The V-6 offers decent acceleration, with 60 mph arriving in 7.3 seconds, but the Atlas suffers from poor fuel economy. - Motor Trtend
When popping the hood of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, you will find a standard 235 hp 2.0L Inline-4 unit, and a 276 hp 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6 engine. This machine delivers decent numbers on the chart but when put in comparison it lacks the competence to face its rivals with regard to power production.
In spite of having an edge of being equipped with the highest engine capacity in class, the Volkswagen Atlas fails to deliver a good number for its horsepower, when compared to its rivals. However, it does justice with the torque it offers. This would mean that the vehicle lacks speed but is also capable of comfortably hauling its 8 passenger capacity.

Having a higher asking price over its competitors goes as a negative mark for the Toyota Highlander. Atlas from Volkswagen and Chevrolet Traverse is equipped with 3.6-liter engines which are also the largest in its segment. Not very far behind the other competitors come equipped with 3.5-liter engines.
Up against top-notch rivaling precision from Japan and an engineering stalwart from America, the Volkswagen Atlas finds it a little bit tough to run this race. The upcoming 2022 Volkswagen Atlas has chosen to retain its powertrain and hence it will most likely deliver the same MPG figures with the 2.0L engine of 17 in the city and 19 out on the highway, at least that's what we expect but we will have to wait for EPA to confirm the same.

When it comes to evaluating the competency of the German-made engine we find that the cars in consideration more or less offer a similar number of miles to a gallon. However, when it comes to deciding the best car in the aspect of mileage, the name of a consistent segment leader pops up-Honda Pilot. Even though Honda and Toyota offer equal miles to a gallon on all the aspects, Honda Pilot having a larger fuel capacity delivers a better range, and hence grabs the first place when it comes to fuel efficiency.
The Atlas also gets high marks for its clever sliding second-row seat, with good rear visibility to boot. - Edmunds
It is in this aspect that the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas received several significant interior changes over its previous make. To begin with, up until now, Atlas was capable of accommodating only 7 individuals into it and hence was losing an edge over its rivals. The 2022 model year will see a slight interior change that will make it possible for the Volkswagen Atlas to accommodate 8 people.
Offering the most space for its occupants when compared to the rivals, adds a feather to the hat of the German Company SUV. Coming to the interior cabin design layout, the materials used might be posh, but the whole layout reeks of simplicity and utmost practical nature.

For the 2022 Atlas, Volkswagen also will reportedly introduce a number of creature comforts and additional infotainment features as standard, especially in the SEL and SEL Premium R-Line trims. On the cargo capacity front, with 20.6 cu. ft of outright cargo space, the 2022 Atlas seals a podium spot when compared to its rivals.
On the outside, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas will continue with the same upright look it’s had since its 2018 launch. - Cars Direct
It is in this aspect that the Volkswagen Atlas is expected to get a few modifications. To begin with, the 2022 make comes with an aggressive grille and redesigned headlamps that include standard LED components, just like the 2021.5 MY. Even the rear end finds itself remodeled with new taillights. Further, the vehicle is offered with different wheel sizes and an increase in the cabin space, which resulted in the increment of length of this vehicle.
Coming to the overall exterior styling, the 2022 Atlas is still a bit bland and functional to look at from the outside, while the 5-seater Atlas Cross Sport is still a bit better looking due to its sporting cues. As the 2021 Atlas did get a minor facelift, the same is set to be reciprocated into 2022. We could not access all the details of the exterior dimensions of the 2022 Atlas although one thing we are pretty sure of is the increased length of the Volkswagen Atlas by 3 inches.

There might also be a slight increase in its curb weight but everything else would be approximately the same. When in comparison the Volkswagen Atlas offers the best ground clearance in the segment. The curb weight of the vehicle is moderate and it's good that way, either of the extremes would prove bad for it. Considering the vehicles that rival the German Atlas, their dimensions prove to be pretty similar.
There has been no lag in this safety aspect regarding any offering from the German manufacturer and made on the similar lines of delivering a good safe driver, the Atlas offers a great safety package. The 2022 Atlas receives a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests, and five stars in the side crash test.
The Volkswagen Atlas offers some pretty advanced safety features and will also have more standard ones come the year 2022.
Some of those features are-
The Honda Pilot is one of the top three-row SUVs on the market because of its combination of comfort, storage, and usefulness. It also gets better EPA-estimated fuel efficiency than the Atlas because to its standard V6 engine. The Atlas, on the other hand, has bigger luggage room, more sophisticated driving assistance, and a more modern infotainment system.
The engine of the 2022 Atlas is more efficient than the Chevrolet Traverse. However, the Traverse makes up for it with more horsepower, torque, and interior room. But that's about it for the Chevy, since it's not really enjoyable to drive. The Volkswagen Atlas has a significantly smoother ride. And now, more than ever, the 2022 Atlas turns the tables on the competition by delivering all-wheel-drive throughout the board. Even Atlas's safety and driver-assistance features are superior.
There are two engine options for the Atlas. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.6-liter V6 engine makes 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline-powered Highlander has a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The Highlander Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor to provide 186 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque in total. While the VW Atlas and Toyota Highlander are very equally matched in terms of off-road capability, the Atlas has a slight advantage in terms of overall performance, but only if you choose an all-wheel-drive option.
Because of its sheer size, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas stands out in the competitive midsize SUV sector. The Volkswagen Atlas is a big and luxurious three-row SUV. It also includes an easy-to-use infotainment system and useful driving assistance. Although the Atlas' available engines offer subpar acceleration, it is still an attractive choice for a family-friendly SUV.
