Overview

Alfa Romeo has always made pretty cars and delivered a unique driving experience. Known for its stunning design, ingenious engineering, and pleasant driving experience, the 2023 Alfa Romeo is a capable luxury midsize SUV with a powerful drivetrain and unique looks to go along with it. Alfa Romeo has always been a niche brand that people either swear by or dislike due to supposed reliability issues. The past few years have been pivotal for the brand as it has reenvisioned itself with affordable luxury-class vehicles all around. With more competent specs and a more refined design, the brand has been steadily increasing its quality and appeal which had deteriorated over the years.

Buying Advice

We would recommend going with the Stelvio Veloce as it provides a nice balance between luxury, features, and affordability. It has 19-Inch aluminum wheels, an 8.8-Inch AM / FM / HD radio with built-in navigation support, and premium seats along with a whole host of safety features. There is also the option to upgrade the active sensors in the car with the Active Assist Plus Package and a better audio system with the premium interior and sound package. For our more performance minded audience, we recommend going with the 2023 Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It has a better engine and more responsive brake rotors for a more fast-paced ride.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For 2023 Alfa Romeo has added a new limited edition trim to the Stelvio known as the Estrema. The Estrema is just below the Quadrifoglio among the trims of the Stelvio and it serves to bridge the gap between the Veloce and the Quadrifoglio. With a much more accessible trim lineup and a focus on driving experience, the Stelvio will take center stage by December 2022. The 2023 Stelvio’s interiors feel luxurious although with cut corners and the drivetrain is responsive and pleasant. The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be competing against the Audi Q5 Sportback, the Porsche Macan, and the Jaguar E-Pace.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Stelvio will be coming in five different trims including the limited edition Estrema. The trims this time around are called the Stelvio Sprint, Stelvio Ti, Stelvio Veloce, Stelvio Estrema, and the high-end performance based Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The base trim, the Stelvio Sprint comes at an MSRP of $46,575 which is a little steep for its competition but provides a lot of value for the slight price hike. All trims have their unique features, ranging from purely cosmetic to functional and all trims build upon their lesser counterparts. The base trim comes at a reasonable price of $46,575 and the price hike for higher trims is also understandable until the Quadrifoglio comes into the picture.

Thus, all the trims of the 2023 Stelvio have unique offerings on offer and they have their own individual design elements to complement the type of person using it. The base Sprint trim comes with all the necessities and much more in terms of comfort and safety features while the performance-oriented Quadrifoglio has a completely different and more powerful 2.9L V6 Twin Turbo PDI Engine compared to the 2.0L 280HP I4 DI Turbo Engine available in lower trims. The limited edition Estrema is a good balance between the price jump of the Quadrifoglio. Alfa Romeo has been standardizing a lot of offerings between its trims and it is very evident in the 2023 Stelvio. The packages on offer by Alfa Romeo for the 2023 Stelvio are:-

Active Assist Plus Package

  • Active Blind-Spot Assist
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Highway Assist System
  • Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA)
  • Lane-Keep Assist
  • Traffic Jam Assist
  • Traffic-Sign Recognition

  • 14 speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system
  • Leather dash and upper doors
  • Body-Color Appearance Kit

We Recommend

Release Date

The 2023 model of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is expected to hit the markets by Q4 of 2022.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes with a standard 2.0L turbo in-line 4-cylinder engine on all trims except the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This helps the 2023 Stelvio produce 280hp and 306 lb-ft of torque. The Stelvio has an incredibly quick acceleration of just 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 144 mph. It is the fastest car among its competition by a wide margin as usually luxury SUVs rarely ever put emphasis on power. With quick acceleration, the Stelvio also comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission that makes gear shifts incredibly smooth and seamless. The highly anticipated Quadrifoglio comes with a powerful 2.9L V6 Twin Turbo PDI Engine for an excessive amount of power if necessary.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio far surpasses its competition's power with its 2.0L turbo in-line 4-cylinder engine. The Q5 only comes close to the quick acceleration of the Stelvio and the Macan and Jaguar are slower in comparison. The 2023 Q5 comes the closest to beating the 2023 Stelvio in a Quarter mile run but remains in second position. The Macan has a similar top speed to the Stelvio and the E-Pace is close to them as well. Overall, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio beats all its competitors and the 2023 Jaguar E-Pace gets the shorter end of the stick in terms of pure performance alone.

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ride and Handling

Alfa Romeo are well known for producing cars that are pleasant to drive, the 2023 Stelvio is no exception as it provides a seamless ride in most cases. With a wheelbase of 111 inches and a Double Wishbone suspension up front and Multi-Link suspension out back, the Stelvio is a breeze to handle. It has a Rack-Pinion type steering and a front track width of 63.5 inches to go along with it. The upper-end Stelvio Quadrifoglio has an active Suspension system, Aluminum Steering-Column-Mounted Paddle-Shifters, and a Carbon Fiber drive shaft to provide a much more premium feel to the handling. The limited edition Stelvio Estrema provides a bridge between the Stelvio Veloce and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Braking performance

Although it has a Curb weight of 3,901lbs, the Stelvio has a decent braking system. All the trims of the Stelvio get Advanced Brake-Assist, Electric Park Brake, and Anti-Lock Brakes. The Stelvio comes with a 4-Wheel Disc braking system with a front rotor dimension of 13 inches and a rear rotor dimension of 12.5 inches. It is not very different from that of the competition but drive tests have shown the brakes to be unsatisfactory and not as responsive as hoped. Being the lightest SUV among its luxurious counterparts, the Stelvio does not have a quicker braking action than most of them and its lighter body weight does little in terms of improving its braking potential.

As the lightest car in the segment, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio also has the smallest brake rotors only beating the rear brake rotors of the 2023 Jaguar E-Pace. The 2023 E-Pace also has the biggest front rotors among the competition and the 2023 Q5 Sportback and Macan both have relatively higher curb weights and relatively bigger brake rotors. The towing capacity available makes the 2023 Macan the best among the competition but the results remain inconclusive as we need further data. Overall, the brake rotors on the 2023 Stelvio are on the smaller side and are beaten by the competitors decisively.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its class as well. It provides an above average fuel efficiency of 22 MPG in the city and 29MPG on the highway for a combined average of 25 MPG. The Stelvio has a 16.9-gallon gas tank which provides it a range of around 371.8 miles in the city and 490.1 miles on the highway for a combined average of 422.5 miles. The Stelvio does fall short of its range because of a much smaller gas tank than its competition. The Stelvio has always had decent fuel efficiency unlike its competitors and the trend continues as the Stelvio has one of the most fuel-efficient drivetrains among its competitors.

Overall, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio has one of the best fuel economies among its competition, only competing against the 2023 Audi Q5 Sportback in that regard. However, it has the smallest gas tank among all its competition making its range lower than the others as well. The 2023 Jaguar E-Pace has the biggest gas tank and average fuel efficiency in this segment and the 2023 Porsche Macan has one of the biggest gas tanks, second to the E-Pace but has the worst fuel economy among its competition.

Interior
6.0/10

Alfa Romero always goes the extra mile when it comes to the interiors of their car and they have not disappointed with the 2023 Stelvio. The premium quality is felt everywhere as the Stelvio has a Sport Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel, a perforated-leather shift knob, and premium upholstery seats. The Stelvio comes with a 7.0-Inch TFT color cluster along with a 160-MPH Primary Speedometer, Black Headliner, and Bright Aluminum Pedals. In terms of storage, it comes with a cargo compartment cover, a driver-side instrument panel storage bin, and a front center console storage tray. As part of the creature comforts it has an A/C with Dual-Zone auto temperature control, an Auto-Dimming rearview mirror with a microphone, and a premium cabin air filter. Even with so much going on, the interior design of the Stelvio makes sure it doesn’t feel cluttered or overwhelming.

The 2023 Stelvio has an average interior space among its competition. As it is quite a tall SUV it can afford to provide more headroom for its users, other than that all the SUVs in this segment have relatively similar space provided in them. The Stelvio also has the best maximum cargo capacity due to its interior design. However, the Stelvio also has the worst legroom among its competitors and it is beaten by a wide margin on that front. Overall, the 2023 Stelvio has adequate interior space despite smaller legroom.

Some of the standout features in the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s interiors are:-

  • Sport Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Premium Leather upholstered seats
  • 6-way/ 8-way power-adjustable front seats
  • 7-inch digital cluster
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • A/C with Dual-Zone Auto Temperature Control

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Infotainment system

The 2023 Stelvio will come with the same 8.8-inch touchscreen that can also be accessed by a handy rotary-control knob. It has a standard 8-speaker audio system with the pricier trims having the option to switch to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. The premium audio system provides a seamless and euphonious audio quality and makes the Stelvio viable for multimedia consumption in a much more pleasant setting. The infotainment system has good visual aesthetics and responds in a timely manner. Although Alfa Romeo had a history of making poor UI in their infotainment systems, that issue seems to have been long put to rest as the Ui on the Stelvio is easy to navigate and convenient, if not a little bland. Apart from that, the system supports standard connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and AM/ FM/ HD Radio. The pricier trims also have a built-in navigation system that should have been standard throughout the trims.

Some of the standout features in the interior of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio are:-

  • 8/14 speaker audio system
  • 8.8-inch TFT touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible
  • Wireless charging pad
  • 12-Volt Center Console Power-Outlet
  • 115-Volt Auxiliary Power-Outlet

Exterior
8.0/10

Alfa Romero always make their cars elegant in design and the Stelvio is a continuation of their design doctrine. The 2023 Stelvio has its signature V-Scudetto Grille, "Stelvio" Badge, and High-Performance Adaptive Bi-Xenon Headlamps. Furthermore, it has an Acoustic Laminated Front Door Glass, an Infrared Windshield, and an Automatic Dusk Sensor that’s paired with an automatic high-beam headlamp control. There is little change in the design since previous years and the tried and tested look of the Stelvio will remain mostly unchanged. It has 18-InchMulti-Spoke Wheels on the base trim and 19/20/21-inch 5-Hole Aluminum Wheels on the rest of the trims. The Stelvio comes across as a unique, more luxurious, and more exclusive offering compared to its competitors as its design is one of the most hit-or-miss factors about the SUV.

The 2023 Stelvio and the 2023 Q5 Sportback are the longest SUVs with a similar wheelbase and a marginal difference in their ground clearance. The 2023 Stelvio is also the lightest and tallest SUV among its competition. The Jaguar E-Pace is the widest SUV with the best ground clearance at 8.8 inches. The Macan and the Stelvio have similar ground clearance. The Q5 Sportback is the heaviest among the competition and has the lowest ground clearance as well.

Some standout features of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s interiors are:-

  • High-Performance Adaptive Bi-Xenon Headlamps
  • Acoustic Laminated Front Door Glass
  • V-Scudetto Grille
  • Infrared Windshield
  • Rain-Sensitive Windshield Wipers
  • Automatic-Dimming Exterior Mirrors

Safety

The Stelvio comes with a wide range of safety features that make it a very safe ride, active and passive features come into play to ensure the safety of the people inside. It has adaptive cruise control, the Alfa DNA drive mode system, anti-slip regulation/torque Control, a blind-spot, cross-path detection system, and electronic stability control. Other than that it has sensors like front and rear park-assist sensors, full-speed forward-collision warning plus, hill descent control, hill-start assist, and LED daytime running headlamps. Along with that the 2023 Stelvio also includes some safety measures like a rear backup camera, a remote-start system, a tire pressure monitoring display, and traction control. Features like these make sure the Stelvio is as safe as possible and should these features not work it also has Supplemental Front Seat-Mounted Side airbags which would provide all-around protection in the event of an automobile accident. The NHTSA and IIHS have no data on the Stelvio currently and there have been no recalls as far as we know.

Some of the standout safety features present in the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio are:-

  • Active Blind Spot Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Blind spot and lane departure warning
  • Dual front side-mounted airbags
  • Traction and Stability control

Competition

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2023 Audi Q5 Sportback

Both the 2023 Stelvio and 2023 Q5 Sportback have their strong suits. The Stelvio has more power, better acceleration, a better top speed, a smaller curb weight, and more ground clearance. Whereas, the Q5 Sportback has bigger brake rotors, better fuel efficiency, and a bigger gas tank and therefore, a longer range, more spacious interiors, and better cargo capacity. Overall we would say that the Stelvio comes out on top as it excels in more utilitarian ways than the Q5. However, the Q5 Sportback has a better potential of being a good daily driver as it has better fuel efficiency and a more spacious interior.

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2023 Porsche Macan

Objectively speaking, the 2023 Stelvio either matches or beats the 2023 Macan in almost every category. It is cheaper, has better acceleration, a smaller curb weight, better fuel efficiency, and better cargo space. Whereas, the 2023 Macan has slightly bigger brake rotors and a bigger gas tank. However, in spite of having a bigger gas tank, it fails to match the 2023 Stelvio’s range. Overall, we must agree that the 2023 Porsche Macan is the weakest competitor of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and is in dire need of an overhaul of its internal specifications.

2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2023 Jaguar E-Pace

The 2023 Stelvio beats the 2023 E-Pace but only marginally and it also has shortcomings that the E-pace gets away with. The Stelvio has quicker acceleration and a marginally better top speed. It's also slightly lighter, has better fuel efficiency, and has a slightly bigger cabin. However, the E-Pace has bigger front brake rotors, a bigger fuel tank and driving range, and much greater ground clearance while having just a slightly lower top speed and slightly higher curb weight. Overall, the 2023 Jaguar E-Pace will be a tough competitor to the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

Final Verdict

We would wholeheartedly recommend the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, it is a powerful and capable compact SUV with an incredibly robust engine that has quick acceleration and an incredible top speed. The SUV handles like a dream and is very responsive to inputs. The design of the Stelvio is very unique unlike its competition, it has a unique V-Scudetto Grille and a curvy hood that makes it distinct from the other more boxy SUVs. The limited edition Estrema and the more powerful Quadrifoglio trims make sense as people would want a more exclusive offering or a more powerful option. Even though it has not had much in the way of upgrades, the internals of the Stelvio is among the best if not the best considering its price. The infotainment system could do with a bigger iteration and it could have slightly better brakes but that’s about the only shortcomings of the 2023 Stelvio. For a luxury offering by a premium brand, we couldn’t expect more and Alfa Romeo has really outdone itself with the new 2023 Stelvio.
