Overview

BMW is generally associated with making premium cars that majorly cater to families with their rather spacious sedans and SUVs. However, the Bavarian automaker holds a long history of winning races such as Le Mans and still holds the title of making the car to win the most number of titles. The BMW M4 coupe is basically a 2-door variant of the BMW M3 sedan and is based on the second generation of 4-series that was introduced back in 2021. The exemption of the two rear doors does not make this any less family-friendly as the rear seats unlike other 2-door copes are spacious and comfortable in the M4. However, what the 2023 BMW M4 is really known for is its sheer power and handling as the car comes standard with a 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline-6 cylinder engine mated to a traditional 6-speed manual transmission on the standard variant that puts out a total of 437 ponies and 406 lb-ft of torque. 2023 is the 50th-year mark for the M performance line of vehicles and to make the occasion special, BMW will launch the M4 CSL which will be limited to only 1,000 units and is 240 lbs lighter than the M4 Competition models.

Buying Advice

While the higher power in the Competition trims is exciting, the base variant comes with a very enjoyable 6-speed manual transmission, and considering it’s going to be one of the last cars to feature such transmissions, we lean towards the base M4 coupe and its worth every single penny it asks for.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With the kind of package that BMW offers, rivals like the Lexus RC F, the Mercedes-AMG E53 coupe, and the Audi RS 5 have a tough run for their money. The M4 offers its drivers an overwhelming number of driving modes and that at times becomes a problem as drivers would find it difficult to identify the ideal setup but that aside, the M4 carries almost all that is needed in a car of this format and also has a variant that still offers a manual transmission, making it one of the very few cars that still offer a stick shifter.

Features
8.0/10

The 2023 BMW M4 will be segregated into three trim levels and will cost $74,700 for the standard trim and go all the way to $82,700 for the M4 Competition xDrive. BMW will continue its premium treatment and feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen that comes standard fit on the M4 and has wireless compatibility with both Apple as well as Android devices. The seats come wrapped in premium-grade leather upholstery with the front seats being heated and 14-way power adjustable. If you geek out on tech, then the additional driving assistance professional package for the M4 Competition models is for you as it carries traffic jam assist, lane keep assist, and emergency stop assist along with a few other driver aids. For those fancy, BMW also allows the buyers to add M carbon ceramic brakes and M carbon bucket seats for an additional cost. There also is the 50th anniversary special BMW M4 CSL, which is limited to only 1,000 units and costs a whopping $140,895. The M4 CSL loses 240 pounds compared to the M4 Competition and exempts the rear seats as a part of shedding weight. The car will also feature a carbon fiber roof, hood, and trunk lid along with a titanium exhaust system and track-worthy wheels and tires.

Release Date

The M4 CSL was officially unveiled in the month of May 2022 at Concorso d’Eleganza and the standard variants are expected to hit the dealers in late 2022.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

This is where the BMW M4 takes a lot of beating and criticism as the fuel efficiency is on the lower side. Even though such performance cars are not expected to carry a road trip worth of range, some rivals offer a much better figure in comparison.

With a total range of 296 miles in mixed driving conditions, the m4 holds the least gas range and all the rivals offer much in comparison. The Mercedes AMG E53 coupe takes the lead with a massive 417 miles range.

Interior
6.0/10

Colors aren’t limited to just the exterior of the M4 and users can configure the interior in multiple shades to pick from that are drenched in Merino leather. The dash area has premium aluminum tetragon trim and carbon fiber touches. BMW has never gone normal with their M cars and the BMW M4 carries that character very well. The seats on the M4 are comfortable and hold the occupants in place even when swinging the car around a corner. The $3,800 M carbon bucket seats are much lighter and blend well with the whole character of the car. Even though the M4 is a coupe, the cabin space offered is impressive but the rear headroom does get tight due to its aggressive roofline.

The infotainment system comprises a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and the central dash area houses a 10.25-inch touchscreen that runs the iDrive software that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although certain graphics on the display may be a gimmick, they suit the sporty nature of the car and are integrated very well. The car also received a 16-speaker surround sound system by Harman Kardon.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2023 BMW M4 are

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen.
  • Apply CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Wireless charging pad.
  • Navigation system.
  • 16-speaker audio system by Harman Kardon.

Exterior
6.0/10

This design was introduced in 2021 and It hasn’t still sunk in for a few people as the nose of the car houses a massive kidney grille. However, the car looks much better in person and the aggressive lines and styling on the hood and bumper complement each other very well. The designers have got the proportion on point and the car looks like it's about to launch even with the ignition turned off. The standard variant wears an 18-inch wheel at the front and 19-inch on the rear while the Competition models carry 19-inch in the front and 20-inch in the rear. All the wheels come wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

The Audi RS 5 has the least amount of ground clearance and for a performance vehicle, that only helps as the low center of gravity helps keep the car planted to the ground and let it accelerate quicker. The Lexus is the smallest car and hence making it suffer in terms of the rear passenger space. Mercedes and BMW are the largest cars here, making them pack in ample room for all occupants.

Some of the standout exterior features include

  • 19/20-inch forged aluminum wheels.
  • LED adaptive taillights.
  • Quad exhaust chrome tips.
  • LED automatic high beam.
  • Power folding heated exterior mirror.
  • Rear lip spoiler.

Safety

The 2023 BMW M4 hasn’t been crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS but because the M cars carry a structurally much more rigid chassis and structure than the non-M cars proves the M4 to be safe. BMW hasn’t gone light on the safety tech and for the extra cautious buyers, BMW offers optional packages that include extra features safety features and driver assistance features.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 BMW M4 are

  • Active blind spot detection.
  • Lane departure warning.
  • Front and rear parking sensors.
  • Active cruise control.
  • Traffic jam assist.
  • Emergency stop assist.

Competition

2023 BMW M4 vs 2023 Lexus RC F

The only advantage the Lexus holds over the BMW is its larger engine and the lower price tag. However, the performance proves that it’s worth the extra money to pick the BMW. There isn’t much that the Lexus offers that the M4 cannot do. The BMW also offers larger space in the rear making it the practical choice of the two.

2023 BMW M4 vs 2023 Mercedes AMG E53 coupe

Both these brands have been known to be rivals for a long while and the tradition continues with both these cars. The competition is really tough and even though both their figures in terms of power, cabin space, and dimensions are very close, the Mercedes outperforms the BMW slightly. The major advantage for the Merc is its fuel economy while the BMW holds the lower price tag out of the two.

2023 BMW M4 vs 2023 Audi RS 5

Yet another tough competition as the Audi comes loaded with tech that might make the BMW infotainment look basic. Even though the power output is lower on the Audi, it manages to put out a better acceleration time to 60 mph, all thanks to its standard Quattro system. The BMW M4 however is much more engaging to drive and comes with a manual transmission, making it a completely fun machine.

Final Verdict

You really cannot go wrong with an M performance car and the 2023 BMW M4 is as exciting as things can get. This car is the epitome of handling and the fact that it feels playful to drive the M4 makes the experience worth the money. The BMW M4 also happens to be the only car that offers a manual transmission, which adds a very distinctive character to the car. The car sure does carry a few gimmicks in the name of features and the gas mileage might be too low but that’s ignorable for a car this good in terms of comfort, performance, and styling. However, if fuel efficiency is really important to you, the ideal choice to look for is the 2023 Merced AMG E53 coupe.
