Overview

One of the more popular SUVs in its category, the Edge from Ford is back for another stint for the 2022 MY. This time around though, Ford has made a few changes in the lineup that includes the option of the Black Appearance Package now being offered in the SE and SEL Trims. Furthermore, the SEL trim can be equipped with the Adventure package that packs in 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, faux-leather upholstery, and gray and black exterior accents. The lineup also gets two new exterior shades- Flight Blue and Forged Green. Prices for the 2022 Ford Edge start from $34,905 for the base SE trim and go up to $43,760 for the hardcore performance-focused ST model.

Mechanically speaking, the Edge remains unchanged from last year and it still gets a 250hp turbocharged 4-cylinder motor as standard. What's new is that AWD is standard across the range. This makes the Edge the perfect daily driver for city use that does double up as an off-road machine as well. In this segment, the Ford Edge faces competition from the Nissan Murano and the Mazda CX 9.

Buying Advice

At $37,345, the 2022 Ford Edge SEL trim is the one we recommend. Over the SE trim, the SEL basically adds more useful features and some creature comforts, such as an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a heated steering wheel, LED foglamps, heated exterior mirrors, and power-adjustable front seats which do make the drive a bit more comfortable for the occupants.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For 2022, the Ford Edge adds a Black Appearance package and the Adventure package for a few selective trims. Also, AWD is now standard across all trims. The Edge continues to be offered in four trim levels and a sporty ST model. Mechanically, the Edge sees no changes, and continues to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0L engine paired with an eight-speed automatic. Unlike most SUVs of this class, the Edge still prioritizes passenger comfort over a three-row setup.

The 2022 Edge will have a starting MSRP of $34,905, and the top model will cost $41,095. There are no lease options available as of now. In terms of reliability, the Edge is a pretty reliable vehicle, with customers not reporting any major flaws or issues on this mid-size SUV. The ownership costs for the 2022 Edge are estimated to be around $48,900, an increase of around $1,500 over last year's model.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

"Newly standard all-wheel drive contributes to an enjoyable drive." - KBB

The 2022 Ford Edge will be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine with an output of 250 hp and a torque output of 275 lb-ft. This 2.0L engine is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, and comes with AWD as well. The Ford Edge ST model is powered by a 2.7L twin-turbocharged V6 engine that outputs 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.

The 2.0L engine does a fine job of moving the Edge around with some decent acceleration, but it can do better on the highway. The transmission shifts through gears precisely, and with smoothness. The available driving modes are not very different from each other, but the Sport mode does bring out the character. 0-60 MPH run comes up in 7.6 sec.

Steering and handling-wise, the Edge is a fun car to drive around. The steering is consistent, and the chassis has enough feedback to allow for an engaging driving experience. The suspension is tuned right for control and a comfortable ride quality. The addition of AWD as standard helps with better traction, allowing to carry more speed in turns.

The Nissan Murano comes equipped with the most powerful 3.5 L V6 engine and is the only one to use a CVT. The Mazda CX-9 comes equipped with a 2.5 L engine and is the quickest car in the 0-60 MPH sprint. The Edge and the CX-9 have the most towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. All in all, the Ford Edge is the better option here with its balanced performance and efficiency.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

"The Edge lacks gas-saving tech like a hybrid powertrain or cylinder shutdown tech." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Ford Edge's turbocharged 2.0L engine is not only punchy, but efficient as well. Although EPA ratings are not out yet, the 2022 Edge AWD will return similar numbers as the 2021 model. The 2021 model returned a fuel efficiency of 21 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. It's 18.5 gallon fuel capacity gives a range of 388 city miles and 518 highway miles.

Equipped with almost equal-sized fuel tanks and delivering almost equally with regard to fuel efficiency, these three cars in consideration give each other a neck-to-neck fight for leasing this segment. The CX-9 delivers the best in class mileage for the city, highway, and combined ratings. The Murano has the least city mileage. All three cars give the same highway efficient. The Edge and the Murano return the same highway efficiency.

Interior
7.5/10

"The inside of the mid-size Edge is spacious for people and cargo." - KBB

The 2021 Ford Edge's interior remains the same, and this interior is one of the most functional interiors in this segment. In terms of quality, the Edge has not been very much up to the standard set by its rivals, but the fit and finish do improve as we climb higher up the trim level. Available cabin space has been efficiently used, and the controls are positioned in a way that makes it easy to access them, effortlessly.

The Edge can seat up to 5 passengers, with cargo. The seats have excellent cushioning, and the overall lateral support with the bolstering makes the Edge a great car for long drives. There's sufficient headroom and legroom as well, to accommodate any passenger. The front seats are adjustable, and the rear seatbacks can be reclined. The Edge's cabin is well insulated, and the ride quality is smooth on most surfaces.

Exterior
5.0/10

"The look of the Edge changes a bit depending on which trim you go with."  -KBB

The 2022 Ford Edge sees no change to its exterior. The Edge is a stylish-looking car, but the design is getting old and that takes away the appeal from the overall looks. At the front, the car sports a large hexagonal grille, with slim headlamps, and a flat hood. Along the side, the Edge's body lines give it a very muscular stance, and the sharp styling on the alloy wheels goes in line with the cuts and creases. At the rear, the cross-over roots of this SUV are much visible thanks to the sloping roof.

The taillights have a sporty design and are very eye-catchy to look at. For 2022, Ford has introduced a few packages on the Edge. The Black Appearance package on the SE trim adds exterior black-colored parts. The Adventure package is exactly what it sounds like, and this adds unique wheels, roof rails, and a distinct front bumper. The ST-Line gets a sporty appearance package that resembles the sporty ST model. Dimensionally, the Edge weighs 4,154 lbs, is 188.8 inches long, and has a wheelbase of 112.2 inches.

Comparing to the rivals, the Edge is the tallest of the lot by half an inch, but is the most compact car among these three in terms of length. The CX-9 has the most length and is 10 inches longer than the Edge. It also has the most wheelbase as well, at 115.3 inches. The CX-9 is also wider than the other two by at least 1.5 inches. In terms of ground clearance, the CX-9 sits quite far from the ground, whereas the Murano sits the closest. Some exterior features on the Edge are:

  • 18-inch/19-inch-20-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlamps
  • LED foglights
  • Power liftgate
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Panoramic glass roof

  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • ABS

Competition
5.0/10

2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Nissan Murano

The 2022 Nissan Murano is similar to the Edge in the ways that matter. Both the cars are similarly sized, offer spacious interior space, are well-equipped with standard safety features, and are similarly priced as well. The Edge comes with AWD as standard, has more cargo and towing capacity, and the infotainment is easier to use as well. The Murano on the other hand comes with better interiors, a standard V6 engine, and looks better as well. The Murano can't match the ST model's performance, but it does come close in all the creature comforts offered. All in all, the Murano is the better choice of the two, with its powerful engine and refined interior.

2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Mazda CX-9

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 is a people hauler. It can carry up to 7 passengers, with a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, and is very well-priced for what it offers. It also beats the Edge in terms of fuel-efficiency, and is quicker to the 0-60 mph run than the Edge. The Mazda CX-9's interiors are much more premium than the Edge's, but the Edge offers a more user-friendly infotainment system. In terms of cargo capacity as well, the Edge offers more space than the CX-9. Despite the Edge being more affordable, the CX-9 makes a strong statement with its sporty driving dynamics, better efficiency, and upscale interiors.

Final Verdict

At $34,905, the 2022 Ford Edge now stands strong with AWD as standard. The Edge packs in a long list of standard features, with comfortable seating, and a very straightforward infotainment system. The Edge also is well-equipped with a strong net of safety features, and gets top safety ratings as well. With its powerful engine and efficient fuel figures, the Edge delivers right on in terms of value for money, and its a sure shot recommendation from us.
