The Ford Edge is a superb offering from the house of the American manufacturer and sits between the Escape and the Explorer. The Edge brings a good package in a market filled with rivals like the Honda Passport, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Chevrolet Blazer. The Ford Edge prices start at $36,145 and also comprise 5 trim levels, including the performance-oriented Edge ST.

The crossover is in its current generation since 2011 but has gone through a refresh in 2019 with a truckload of changes. The crossover comes with a solid reliability record which has been multiplied since the refresh. The recall history is rather extensive but we’ve summarized it in a table for an easier read. Let’s go through the recall history and see what the most recurring issues have been in the latest model years of the Edge.

Ford Edge User Complaints

The Ford Edge is a pretty old contender in the segment with good sales figures to boast of. The sales figures also give pretty good data on the common issues and niggles faced by the owners of the crossover. The crossover had seen a major revision for the 2019 model year and also had a steep decline in user complaints. Some of the most common complaints include:

Electrical issues:

  1. Grounding issues: Many people have complained about the grounding in the crossover. The issue caused loss of all power and shutting down due to some grounding issues. The issue had been reported by numerous owners of the 2019 Edge. The complainants have raised concerns over the airbags disabling in this condition.
  2. Erroneous parallel park assist: Many people have complained of the parallel park feature not working as intended. This has led to the Edge hitting other cars in proximity. The main issue here is a miscalculation of the distance between two cars by the system.
  3. Gear Shift Module (GSM) issues: Some owners have reported the car to lose power and not shift the gears since the knob got stuck. The complainants say that the gear knob does not shift gears and one had to restart the vehicle to get it working again.
  4. Backup camera issues: The 2020 Ford Edge’s backup camera is reported to distort the image displayed on the infotainment screen. People have reported the camera to adjust improperly and stays in the wrong position. Some people have reported the screen to go black and display nothing.

Mechanical issues:

  1. Coolant leakage: There have been numerous complaints of the coolant leaking into the engine block and overheating the engine. The issue has been reported to stall the car while moving and cause complete engine failure.
  2. Transmission issues: People have reported instances of the transmission slipping gears, or getting stuck at one gear. The transmission slips gears and enters Neutral from Drive, causing the car to stall. People have also reported the car to enter Neutral from Park, which causes unintended movement. To add to the woes there have been many complaints of the transmission knob getting stuck in its place and not shifting gears at all.
  3. Loss of power steering: There have been numerous reports of loss of power assistance to the steering wheel, causing the wheel to lock in one place and steer abruptly. Complainants have collided with the objects in proximity and have been injured as well.

Exterior issues:

  1. Front windshield visibility issues: The angle of the windshield is reported to cause a reflection in the driver’s eye. This reflection causes a blind spot and affects front visibility. People have reported the issue to the dealers and the same has been communicated to the manufacturer as well.
  2. Trunk door issues: People have reported the hydraulic on the trunk door to lose compression and cause the door to close on a person. There were no warning lights or chimes of any sort. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported yet.

Safety features issues:

  1. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): The AEB in the Edge applies emergency brakes at low speeds. This causes the crossover to stop immediately. Some complainants have reported rear-end collisions due to this but no injuries have been reported due to the low speeds.

Ford Edge Recalls

The crossover had been recalled numerous times in the current generation but if one were to see the frequency, it dropped drastically post the refresh. The crossover’s latest model years have just 7 recalls under its belt which, comparatively, is better than how it was before. Having said that, the latest recall was made on May 24, 2021, with NHTSA Campaign Number 21V377000. Let’s see why the crossover was recalled multiple times over the years:

The Ford Edge is a seasoned player in the market and the American carmaker has taken all the possible measures to ensure reliability. Despite this there have been numerous reports of niggles and issues popping up now and then. The most troublesome one in this generation is the 2017 Edge which had a truckload of complaints and a lot of recalls, making it a major pain for the owners.

Should you buy the 2022 Ford Edge?

The 2022 Ford Edge is a commendable crossover that combines practicality with space and performance. It brings in a very comfortable cabin and a solid reliability record, especially after the refresh in 2019. It gained a lot of popularity due to the Edge ST as well that took the performance much higher than expected.
