Overview

The 2021 Toyota Corolla comes as a carry-over model for sale that now features some new upgrades such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Rear-Cross Traffic Alert, and BLIS. Though mechanically unchanged, it has extended its trim belt after adding the SE Apex Edition, and XSE Apex Edition in the lineup alongside L, LE, SE, XLE, XSE, SE Nightshade Edition at a starting MSRP of $21,050. And, the Corolla SE steals the light in this production with its impressive optional and standard features such as 9-speaker JBL Audio Plus, Sport Driving Mode, and many more.

Being a frugal sedan, the Toyota Corolla 2021 offers up to 40 MPG of fuel economy without compromising with its 139 hp and 169 hp power curves. The rivals like the Honda CivicHyundai Elantra, Mazda 3, and the VW Jetta are also there to keep the market competitive in both affordable pricing and features. However, Toyota expands the choices available at its end with other haulers such as the 2021 Corolla hybrid costing $24,625 and the 2021 Corolla Hatchback for payment of $21,740 at the least.

Buying Advice:

The SE trim of the 2021 Toyota Corolla is the one, one should go for as it has multiple standard features that will suffice just like higher trims including a sport-tuned suspension and automatic climate control. And, meanwhile, the optional features like the 9-speaker audio and sport driving mode could be availed with little increment in the overall budget. So, that makes it reasonable in its investment as compared to higher trim that costs much higher for such assets.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Toyota Corolla sedan is a big step forward - CNet (Road & Show)

Boasting a J.D power rating of 82, the 2021 Toyota Corolla sedan owns a high-quality build that can cost a fortune of $21,050-$29,335 across the lineup. And its price increment seems to feel justified as the newly added Apex Editions upgrade the dynamics by a margin with enhanced suspension and summer tires, thereby, employing a better driving experience. Apart from these, the practicality of 13.1 cu-ft of cargo capacity remains consistent for all, bringing ease in loading maximum luggage.

In terms of finance, the Toyota Corolla 2021 has a general maintenance charge of $2,866 for the L trim that can go as high as $3,687(highest in the lineup) for the SE configuration. On top of that, one has got to pay a repairing payment of $601 as well excluding those maintenance charges of 5 years. Also, on average cometh a fuel charge of $7,367 after the same time period. While the depreciation in resale can be within the ballpark of $4,964 for the L trim  and $7,214 for the XSE Apex Edition.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The base engine will suffice for getting around town, but it struggles to get the car up to highway speeds with any urgency - Cars.USNews

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is available with the same trustworthy 1.8L Inline-4 motor that routes 139 HP of power and 126 lb-ft of torque through an automatic CVT to the front wheels. However, the fairly new entrant in the Corolla lineup is a peppier 2.0L Inline-4 engine rated at 169-hp and 151 lb-ft of torque features on the SE and XSE trim offer a choice between a 6-speed manual and a CVT.

Moreover, unlike the Corolla hatchback, the sedan model comes with a hybrid powertrain too. With a 0-60 MPH time of 9.4 seconds, the 2021 Corolla’s base engine that has 139-hp offers decent acceleration but misses out on the excitement of rivals such as the Civic and Mazda 3. The Corolla XSE with the more potent 2.0L motor accelerates from 0-60 MPH in 7.8 seconds.

Toyota has ditched the torsion beam suspension and replaced it with a brand new multi-link suspension set up at the rear, improving the ride stability and comfort. Corolla’s steering now has more weight, unlike in the previous generation model as well. The 2021 Corolla gets 10.8-inch brake rotors up front while at the rear 10.2-inch rotors are standard which should be able to bring it to a stop from 60-0 mph in a decent 119-ft.

Interior
8.0/10

Toyota describes the Corolla’s interior design philosophy as “sensuous minimalism.” - Kelley Blue Book

Last redesigned in 2020, the interior of the 2021 Corolla sedan offers a clean and modern dashboard and control layout. For a compact sedan, Toyota Corolla's interior comes with a fair amount of space and with a design that makes it look a bit more premium than it is. Interior materials include Cloth upholstery which in higher trims upgrades to SoftTex. There is also available heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, interior ambient lighting.

The XSE's seats have exclusive blue-striped cloth inserts with matching blue contrast stitching that adds more character. The 2021 Corolla seats five passengers, but with its longer 106.3-inch wheelbase, the sedan is more comfortable than the hatch. The front passengers have plenty of room, but seating for rear passengers is tighter as the 34.8 inches of legroom is below the class average. The Honda Civic's interior space is more, the Hyundai Elantra offers the most interior space.

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is sure to get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display that sits in the center of the dash. Toyota has finally included Android Auto in 2021 Corolla sedan. You get a six-speaker audio system to keep you entertained inside. However, the 8-speaker JBL audio systems and navigation are still an option. The 2021 Corolla Sedan XLE, XSE, and XSE Apex Edition come with Remote Connect capability. Through this you can use features like remote start, remote lock/unlock, and view the diagnostics from their smartphones.

The latest Corolla sips some styling caffeine, but not more than it can handle. - The Car Connection

The 2020 update gave us the most radical-looking Corolla, which is why the 2021 Corolla comes unchanged in this exterior department. The only noticeable change is seen on the new-for-2021 limited-run Apex Edition, which starts at an MSRP of $25,275 on the SE. Apart from mechanical upgrades, the Corolla Apex trim gets a more aggressive body kit along with blacked-out elements.

Although the 2021 Corolla has seen some subtle improvements and tweaks on the outside, nothing much will tell it apart from the outgoing model. The notable exterior features of the 2021 Corolla Nightshade edition are chrome-tipped dual exhaust, Fishhook all-LED headlights, rear spoiler, 18” machined alloy wheels, and LED Taillamps.

What are the different exterior colors on offer?

2021 Toyota Corolla vs 2021 Honda Civic

Though both these sedans are equally rated in most aspects like cabin-space, and comfort, the Civic takes the performance crown. At the same time, Toyota’s reliability, and exceptional gas mileage make Corolla an affordable customer. The pricing of Toyota Corolla also makes it a tempting choice for entry-level cars with the most value. But the Civic is more powerful, faster, has a better set of brakes, and also offers more space on the inside. If you can sacrifice on fuel efficiency a bit and spend a few extra bucks, the Civic is the livelier choice to go for.

2021 Toyota Corolla vs 2021 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra is powerful, faster, and spacious in all its forms. That said, the Toyota Corolla comes back into the game and makes a stronger statement with the best-in-class ride quality, miles better fuel efficiency, and the sheer space inside. Not to forget, its unmatched reliability and safety quotient. This simply puts your needs into perspective. The 2021 Corolla, according to us, should make a better deal of the two considering the priorities of a family man. If you've just got yourself into a college, the Elantra should appeal to you more.

2021 Toyota Corolla vs 2021 Mazda 3

The Mazda offers a more entertaining offering and is also quicker than the Corolla in a straight line. While the 2021 Corolla is more efficient, both offer similar interior and cargo space. Toyota also offers an impressive warranty and is reliable in the long run. The high resale value and the sharp styling do make it difficult to choose between the two. While the agile performance of the Mazda 3 sedan is enticing, the Corolla plays like a more safe bet.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Corolla is the jack of all and the master of none. It gets beaten by most of its rivals in terms of energetic driving performance and 2nd-row seating space yet it outsells all of them. Mostly, because it makes it to fleets who want frugal engines and reliable performance. We could say it wouldn’t be a bad buy but given the fact that there are better cars in the market in terms of driving, you should consider them first before you go straight and buy the Toyota Corolla.

Pros - ["The 2 tone interior.", "The great gas mileage", "The move ability to make turns"]

Cons - ["The engine wants to stall", "The tire size is weird", "Rotation is evey 5000 miles instead of 3."]

The car handles good around corners breaks nicely smooth as a good radio system but overall there are some issues with it but I've learned to live with them and needs to have a better form of tire rotation and get sizes that you can afford instead of expensive sports tires

Pros - ["Fuel Economy", "Safety Features"]

Cons - ["Low ride height", "Didn't come with a spare tire"]

So overall I love this car. It handles nicely and smoothly, seata are comfortable. Fuel economy is great getting about 600 miles on a tank and runs me about 40 bucks to fill up every two weeks. Safety features are top notch from lane departure alerts to the Hud warnings on the dash. I do have some complaints though as it's right in the middle of smart car tech.
