About 2011 Toyota Camry

4.1

Overall Rating

Being a huge success can many times have lots of haters, and that is also the case with the Toyota Camry. The Toyota Camry has been a success all over the world.

Available for sale at a starting price of $20,955, the 2011 Toyota Camry carries over unchanged from last year. So essentially, it continues to be part of the seventh generation introduced in 2007. It remains a best-selling model in a segment that has other top-rated midsize sedans such as the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima.

There's no doubt that the Toyota Camry is affordable, offers great reliability, and delivers an extremely pleasant ride. These qualities make it the most ideal family sedan. Its low safety ratings and substandard interior materials do, however, keep it from being outstanding.

Since there aren’t many features available lower down the spectrum, it is better to opt for the SE trim with either of the two transmission options as it adds a lot more functionality to the mix while it still keeps the prices in check. Available features like a leather steering wheel, premium cloth upholstery, leather trim on the shift knob, and more make the SE trim a better value for money.

Cons

  • Subpar cabin fit and finish

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

Toyota offers the Camry in four trims for the 2011 model year. Buyers looking to own this sedan have an option to choose between a manual and an automatic transmission alongside the available V6 engine that is optional on all trims except for the base.

The base trim is more functional in nature as it is intended to be cheaper and cater to a low-budget audience, while the higher trims keep on adding the creature comforts to make things more comfortable for the buyers. But even in its least expensive form, the Toyota Camry offers decent value for money.

Engine and Performance
7.6/10

"The Camry's engine choices include a respectably powerful 2.5-liter inline-4 and an ultra-smooth 268-horsepower V6 that's without question the best in the family sedan segment." -Edmunds.Com

The Camry is available with two engine options, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit that produces 169 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque, while the larger 3.5-liter V6 engine generates 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The base inline-4 engine is available with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

However, the V6 engine is mated just to the 6-speed automatic transmission. The power is sent only to the front wheels, and there is no AWD drivetrain available. The 0-60 mph run is done in respectable 8.4 seconds with the base engine, and the quarter-mile too takes a rather decent 16.4 seconds.

The Ford Fusion is not only the most affordable of the lot but also offers the highest engine output in this comparison, and hence is the fastest of the lot. The other three cars have similar engine output with one bettering the other in some or the other aspect. But the most expensive Chevrolet Malibu is the slowest of all and also has the lowest top speed.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Toyota cars have been synonymous with frugality all over the world, and the 2011 Camry has been one of the reasons behind it. The EPA rates the Camry for 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, while the combined city and highway driving is rated at around 26 mpg. Add to that the large 18.5-gallon gas tank and the car can be driven for over 600 miles on the highway on a single tank of gas.

The Camry and the Malibu both have an identical fuel economy rating, but the Chevy employs a smaller fuel tank, which adversely affects the range. The Ford Fusion has a marginally higher fuel consumption, while the NIssan Altima is a bit more fuel-efficient than the other two. The Altima also makes use of a larger fuel tank, and hence offers the best driving range in this comparison.

Interior
8.3/10

"The Camry has mundane cabin styling, and the materials aren't the best quality." -Cars.USNews.Com

The cabin of the Toyota Camry in the base trims is more functional and straightforward and is ergonomically designed. Even on the higher trims, the materials quality and the fit and finish are not up to the standards. The plastic isn’t up to the mark, and the panel fitment isn’t up to the rival standards. There is, although, ample space up front and the rear seat space is amongst the best in the business. The trunk capacity is also on par with the competition at 15 cu-ft.

The Nissan Altima offers the best front row space but has a pretty compact rear seat, whereas it is the opposite with the Camry, which has the most spacious rear seat. The Ford Fusion offers the best balance between passenger space at the front and rear and the trunk capacity, which is amongst the best in the segment. Overall, all four cars have pretty much the same space inside their cabins.

Exterior
7.5/10

"The Toyota Camry might be the longtime best-seller among mid-size sedans, but most would argue that it didn't get there with its looks." -TheCarConnection.Com

The Toyota Camry is no looker, but that does not mean that it is ugly in any which way. The slim and minimalistic front grille flanked by slim headlamps makes for a pleasant-looking front fascia of the car. The smooth flowing lines with very minimal curves and small-ish wheels confirm the affordable and frugal intent of the car.

This midsize sedan weighs 3,263 lbs and stands 5.5 inches above the ground. So it is quite heavy, and when paired with its lowered stance, it is easy to understand why the handling isn't all that agile. In terms of exterior dimensions, all four cars are pretty much neck-to-neck with hardly anything differentiating between them.
