About 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee has benefitted a lot from the short marraige between Chrysler adn Mercedes-Benz which has led to borrowing of the parts from the M-Class platform, increasing the capability of the SUV multiple folds

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good mid-size SUV and comes with many comforts. This year, a new off-road focussed Trailhawk trim debuts with a lot of off-road gears. The rest of the specs and features remain the same. The 2013 Grand Cherokee has a starting MSRP of $27,695. The power is sourced from a 290-hp 3.6L V6 with the option of a 360-hp 5.7L V8.

Both RWD and 4WD configurations are available. The interior of the SUV comes with many comfort features like power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and even has options to enhance the level of comfort. The Grand Cherokee goes into direct rivalry with the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

We recommend buying the Limited trim with the all wheels drive as it comes with the Laredo X and E packages as standard. These packages bring a lot of good features to the car. The Limited trim also has heated second-row seats and a navigation system along with rear parking sensors over and above Laredo’s standard and optional features.

I love my Jeep

Pros

I love my engine, I also love the style

Cons

I don't like the gas., I also don't like the loud sounds.

Jeep is the SUV expert, so of course I feel my car is superior. V-6 power engine is the best. The interior is nicely finished, and the SUV drives well. And the eight-speed automatic is smooth. Handling is sound and secure. I'm an adventurous spirit who craves off-road exploration, the Trailhawk is your go-to model.

Pricing begins from $27,695 for the Laredo trim while the top-end Overland Summit trim may reach up to $47,995, without destination charge. The new Trailhawk trim is an off-road focussed model and comes standard with a 4WD system.

The rest of the lineup comes standard with an RWD drivetrain while a 4WD setup is available. When it comes to standard features, the Grand Cherokee pleases its buyers with a decent list of features. Engine and Performance
8.6/10

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6L V6, which makes 290 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is paired to a five-speed automatic transmission, which directs all the power to the rear wheels or all the wheels equally (4WD). There is an optional 5.7L V8, which makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque. This is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

When properly equipped, the Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,200 pounds. The Grand Cherokee does not offer agile handling due to its heavy curb weight. However, its handling is composed, therefore inspiring drivers. As for ride quality, Jeep has tuned the suspension a little bit firm for a sporty driving experience. The 4WD system offers excellent traction and grip levels.

In performance tests, the base V6 can do the 0-60 MPH sprint in 7.6 seconds and will do a standing quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds. With the V8, it does the same sprint in 6.5 seconds. Therefore, the optional engine is the go-to option for speed and power lovers. The Grand Cherokee performs decently when it comes to braking. It records a braking test of 125 feet without any nose dive.

In terms of speed, the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport tops the table with amazing performance numbers. Next in line is the Ford Edge with decent performance and grunt from a V6. Had the Nissan Murano been fitted with a traditional automatic transmission, it would have better performance stats than the Edge.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the least efficient midsize SUVs. It offers 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and a combined MPG of 19. The 5.7L V8 gives an mpg figure of 13 MPG in the city, 20 MPG on the highway, and 15 MPG combined. These ratings are very less for the class.

It comes with a 24.6-gallon fuel tank, which allows it to have a combined range of 467 miles with the V6 and 369 miles with the V8. Owing to its stellar towing capacity, the fuel economy will definitely decrease depending on the amount of load carried. Therefore, the Grand Cherokee is not a fuel-saver.

If observed properly, the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport comes out to be the most efficient among the lot. The Ford Edge's fuel economy is identical to the Santa Fe Sport but it delivers a better range. On the other hand, the fuel estimates of the Nissan Murano are slightly better than the Grand Cherokee.

Build quality is top-notch in the Grand Cherokee- Edmunds

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee can accommodate five passengers in the cabin. The front seats feature manually-adjustable seats and can be upgraded to power-adjustable seats with the optional Laredo E package, this also adds leather upholstery. The trims following this all feature power-adjustable seats. Dual-zone automatic climate control is available on the Laredo X package, standard on the Limited and Overland trim.

The Limited trim offers power lumbar support to the front seat and a heating function to the rear outward seats. The Overland trim comes with upgraded leather upholstery and a heated leather and wood steering wheel. The Overland trim has a Summit package, which adds the option of Black or Saddle colored leather upholstery into the mix. In terms of passenger space and comfort, the Grand Cherokee excels in both areas.

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a sophisticated and stylish exterior. Although the Nissan Murano is underpowered, its low weight helps it with a better pace than the Grand Cherokee. The Ford Edge's overall length is a lot less for a midsize SUV. One's advantage of this is easy maneuverability. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport sits quite low and sports a short wheelbase for a quick pace. Some other exterior features are:

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Fog lamps
  • Fully automatic projector-beam headlights

Safety
8.6/10

Unfortunately, the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

NHTSA has given a 4-star overall safety rating out of a possible 5 stars to the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is for both RWD and 4WD variants. IIHS has given the Jeep Grand Cherokee many good scores, including one Poor and Marginal score but has still managed to score a Top Safety Pick.

While the SUV received positive feedback from IIHS, the Grand Cherokee lacks standard active safety features, which is pretty much expected for the price you pay. All of the safety features are either available on either trim or are optional. Some of these safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
6.0/10

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2013 Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano is powered by just one engine but it feels quicker and at the same time, more efficient than the Grand Cherokee. In contrast to the latter's firm ride quality, the Murano offers a smooth ride. Inside, the Murano feels spacious and packs user-friendly controls but it lacks enough cargo space like the Grand Cherokee.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2013 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is the closest competitor of the Grand Cherokee. It offers abundant features but its infotainment system is difficult to use. On the road, the Edee shines with an agile acceleration and confident handling. It further impresses with a quiet and spacious cabin with a respectable cargo capacity.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Apart from its weak base engine, the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport seems like a good pick in this class. Its turbocharged engine is economical and strong. The cabin is practical and functional while third-row seating is also available. Buyers will also be complemented with a lengthy warranty. It is a value-for-money car.

Final Verdict

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good car with enough performance and a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds and even has a V8 engine option. The good part is the Grand Cherokee looks good as well and is also feature-rich, i.e., comes with many features as standard and has many optional extras as well, making it a good car to keep in mind when buying.
