The 2013 Jeep Patriot was introduced as an affordable SUV which shines both off-road and on-road. The Patriot is a crossover SUV rather than a mid-size SUV it looks upright, traditional and the boxy look makes it stand out. It has a simple but purposeful body. It has the typical Jeep styling elements like the 7 slotted grilles and the macho appeal. Many of the Patriot variants come with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that tends to bring out the noise and vibration in these engines, and there's too much of a lag when you need a quick burst of power.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2013 Jeep Patriot is a five-seater compact crossover SUV. It is available in Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim levels. The base model Sport is very basic with standard 16-inch steel wheels, roof rails, fog lights, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a tilt-only steering wheel, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, and a four-speaker sound system. There is the Power Value Group which adds full power accessories like heated mirrors, keyless entry, and additional body-color exterior pieces. Air-conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels are also available.

The Latitude trim gets all of the Sport's options, plus a height-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a reclining rear seat, and steering wheel audio controls. Satellite radio is optional. The Limited trim adds all the above optional items, plus automatic climate control, rear disc brakes, upgraded exterior trim, leather upholstery, a six-way power driver seat, and a trip computer.

All-wheel-drive models, regardless of the trim, can be equipped with the Freedom-Drive II Off-Road Group. This includes an enhanced four-wheel-drive system, special 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, a full-size spare tire, hill descent control, tow hooks, skid plates, and a height-adjustable driver seat on the Sport.

We Recommend

The Jeep Patriot rides on-road and off-road indisputably like a full-size SUV. It is great for individuals who want the adventurous touch and yet require a vehicle for their daily commute. The four-door Patriot has plenty of room inside for the whole family. The Jeep Patriot checks in with a significantly lower price than any other SUV.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The very basic front-wheel-drive Jeep Patriot is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a CVT is optional. Hill-start assist is also standard.

The Patriot Limited and "Freedom-Drive I" all-wheel-drive models only come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. It gets the same transmission choices as the 2.0-liter. The CVT feels a little outdated and hard to respond to.

The optional Freedom-Drive II four-wheel-drive system includes a low range. The Patriot limited with the four-wheel-drive system and 2.4L engine takes 10.3 seconds to reach 60 mph from 0, which is one of the slowest crossover SUVs. The engine feels dull and the CVT lacks the sudden power delivery. The throttle response is naïve and the brakes are not great.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The Jeep Patriot has a fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined, with front-wheel drive and the CVT which is substandard given its lack of power. It's marginally better at 23/30/26 with the manual transmission. The fuel economy stands at 21/26/23 with Freedom-Drive I and the CVT. It goes up to 22/28/24 with the manual, but down to a poor 20/23/21 with Freedom-Drive II.

Since the primary focus was on off-road capability and the four-wheel-drive system, the fuel economy is very poor. While the standard front-wheel-drive model gives better economy than a four-wheel drive, it is not still up to the segment standards. But the decent 13.5-gallon fuel tank will help for better range and will last for a trip into the woods.

Interior
6.5/10

The interior of the Patriot looks a little utilitarian. But when looked closely, low-quality materials can be seen all around. Cheap and hard plastic materials make the cabin dull. The basic sports variant lacks even basic features like air conditioning.

The rear legroom is so small that it is very difficult for grownups to sit. User-friendly controls and dials make commuting easy. The touchscreen UI feels outdated and takes time to respond.

The cargo area is significantly smaller than almost all crossover competitors. There is a compass in the center console bringing out Jeep’s heritage and the speakers that flip down from the raised liftgate to energize those tailgate parties. One very useful feature in the interior is that the cargo lamp doubles as a bright, removable, and rechargeable LED flashlight which is very convenient.

  • Rechargeable LED flashlight
  • Cloth upholstery; leather optional
  • 60/40-split folding backseat
  • Outside temperature gauge
  • The optional flat-folding front-passenger seat
  • Optional heated front seats

2013 Jeep Patriot Infotainment System

The 2013 Jeep Patriot lacks some of the segment-best features but makes up for it with its easy-to-use controls and minimal styling. The instrument cluster is basic but provides all the information needed to know both off-road and on-road. The compass in the center console brings out the typical Jeep DNA. There is a 12V DC power outlet for charging mobile phones. The navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity come as an optional package.

  • iPod interface
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Navigation with Sirius Travel Link
  • CD player and an auxiliary audio jack
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Exterior
7.0/10

The exterior of the Patriot looks boxy and gives a rugged look and road presence. The typical seven-spoke grill adds to the beauty. There is cladding all over the body for off-roading and the jacked-up stance helps increase ground clearance.

The round headlamps and large matt black side mirrors separate the Jeep Patriot from other SUVs.

The fog lamps are strategically placed on the lower side of the front bumper to significantly increase night-time visibility. The Patriot is a compact sport utility vehicle featuring classic Jeep styling in an affordable package. The 2013 Jeep Patriot is available in nine exterior colors: black, silver, white, Cherry Red, dark grey, medium grey, Dark Forest Green, dark blue, and light blue. The 17-inch alloy wheels bring out the Jeep personality.

  • Seven-slot grille
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Matt black side mirrors
  • Round headlamps
  • Increase ground clearance

Safety
7.8/10

The 2013 Jeep Patriot comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and full-length side curtain airbags. The Limited gets rear disc brakes. Front side airbags are optional on all trims either in the Security and Cargo Convenience Group or as stand-alone items. The Jeep Patriot's anti-lock brakes are specially calibrated for off-road terrain to provide optimum braking power even when mud, dirt, or gravel might have significantly affected braking power.

  • Side curtain airbags
  • Electronic stability system with electronic roll mitigation
  • Anti Lock brakes
  • Traction control
  • Optional Side-impact airbags for the front seats

Final Verdict

The 2013 Jeep Patriot is good both on-road and off-road indisputably like a full-size SUV, and although reasonably priced, it does not miss out on functionality. But its key competitors offer more features. Its engine feels powerless and the CVT gearbox is also a downsize. It is great for individuals who want the adventurous touch and yet require a vehicle for their daily commute. But if you are looking for a crossover SUV for comfort, then you should consider other options.
