The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee looks; well; like how it has always looked and probably how it’s going to look forever. The Grand Cherokee for 2015 comes with very minor changes and remains unchanged for the most. The Grand Cherokee comes in seven trim lines ranging from $29,995 for the base Laredo trim to the high-end Summit trim that starts at $48,995.

Two engines are on offer- a 290-hp V6 and a 360-hp V8. This SUV is also popular for its irrefutable off-road ability. The interior has plenty of luxury and tech-oriented features. Along with adult-friendly space, the Grand Cherokee also offers a decent cargo capacity. It gets its rivalry from the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and Nissan Murano

The Limited trim costing $37,565 is the one to go for and comes fitted with 18-inch wheels, Auto-dimming rearview mirror, Leather upholstery, Eight-way power passenger seat (with four-way power lumbar), Driver memory settings, Heated rear seats, USB charging connectivity, and Rearview camera and rear parking sensors added to the features offered by the base trim.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Jeep is known to be generous when it comes to standard features- Carbuzz

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in seven trim levels which are Laredo, Laredo E, Altitude, Limited, Overland, High Altitude, and Summit. Prices begin from $29,995 for the Laredo trim while the top-end Summit trim is priced at $48,995. All the trims are offered in both RWD and 4WD configurations.

A decent list of features is standard in the Grand Cherokee. But, as you explore higher trims, each trim level is identified with a different level of amenities and price. Besides this, there are various optional features available as well. This year, the Summit trim gets an active noise cancellation system as standard.

Engine and Performance
8.2/10

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine that puts out 290 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. Other engine options include a 5.7L V8 that is capable of making 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque which is optional on all but the base trim. The engine's power is transferred to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

All the trims come standard with an RWD drivetrain but a 4WD system is available. The Grand Cherokee had a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds, which is really amazing. It offers a quiet ride but the ride quality is a bit firm for our tase. The steering is nicely weighted and its short turning radius makes it easy to maneuver at tight turns.

The Grand Cherokee reaches 60 MPH from a standstill in 7.6 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 15.9 seconds which is behind the class. The V8 is powerful enough to fly this SUV to 60 MPH in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 140 MPH. The brake pedal is very sensitive and even a small force can bring this hefty SUV to stop in 125 feet.

Both the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and the Nissan Murano have similar power outputs but the CVT transmission in the latter is the reason for its slow acceleration. The Ford Edge is an outstanding performer in this segment, though its towing capacity is less. The Grand Cherokee is the sluggish runner in the race.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The Jeep Grand Cherokee performs averagely well in terms of fuel efficiency. It delivers a fuel economy of 17 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined. The more powerful V8 engine drops the fuel economy to 17 MPG combined, which is below segment standards.

Obviously, opting for the 4WD system will dip the ratings. The Grand Cherokee gets a 24.6-gallon fuel capacity outputting a range of 418 miles in the city, 615 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 492 miles. With the V8 equipped, you can drive up to 418 miles combined only.

Build quality is top-notch in the Grand Cherokee- Edmunds

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers seating for five people while many among the competition do offer 7 or even 8 seats. The build quality and overall fit and finish are great. There are traces of hard plastics but higher trims will greet you with wood trim and soft-touch leather surfaces. Seat upholstery choices include cloth, leatherette, and leather.

The seats are well-padded and provide a good amount of support for long distances. They are power-adjustable on higher trims and also get creature comforts like heated and ventilated functions. Both the rows offer adult-friendly passenger space. So, six-footers can easily slide in the back row but the middle-seat passenger might feel discomfort.

As for cargo capacity, the Grand Cherokee has a trunk volume of 36.3 cu-ft., which expands to 68.3 cu-ft. with the rear seats folded. It is a little less than its segment rivals. However, there is a decent amount of interior storage available in the Grand Cherokee in the form of the glovebox, center console storage, and door pockets.

The Grand Cherokee comes standard with a 5-inch touchscreen but lacks standard smartphone connectivity. It also features an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system that is one of the best in the business. SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 4-month trial subscription is also a feature present as standard. Some other cabin features are:

  • 8-way adjustable power driver and passenger seats
  • Multi-level heating
  • Rear ventilation ducts
  • Split-folding rear seatback
  • 2 one-touch power windows and heated mirrors

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The Jeep Grand Cherokee looks pretty much the same as before. The base trim features automatic halogen quad headlamps while the higher ones get adaptive auto-leveling Bi-xenon HID headlamps. The base model features 17-inch alloy wheels which are replaced by 28-inch alloy wheels on the mid-level and 20-inch ones in the highest trims.

The higher trims further feature LED daytime running headlamps and power-folding multifunction mirrors with the heating element, memory, auto-dimming for the driver, supplemental turn signals, courtesy lighting, body color. The Grand Cherokee has a ground clearance of 8.6 inches, which is really good for off-roading trails.

The Nissan Murano sits quite low to the ground so getting in and out of the vehicle will be easy. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has a short wheelbase which helps it to burn out quickly on the road. The main reason for the excellent performance of the Ford Edge is its low curb weight. Some notable exterior highlights are:

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Fog lamps
  • Fully automatic projector-beam headlights

Safety

Unfortunately, the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

The Jeep Grand Cherokee scores well on the safety tests conducted by NHTSA and IIHS, both. The Grand Cherokee 4WD scores an overall 5-star rating from NHTSA while the RWD models got a 4-star rating. It also received a 'Good' rating on most of the categories by IIHS.

The base Laredo trim lacks all the active safety features, which is a major drawback. Higher trims get access to available safety features. The Grand Cherokee also gets a suite of seven airbags as part of the passive safety feature. Some of the main safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring

Competition

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2015 Nissan Murano

The all-new Nissan Murano lacks the sporty driving experience of the Grand Cherokee but it has a nice balance of power and fuel economy. Unlike the latter, it delivers a pleasant ride. The interior is spacious and upscale and its safety ratings easily beat the Grand Cherokee. Therefore, the Murano is a better pick.

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2015 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is also all-new for 2015 MY. It has sophisticated ride quality and its optional V6 engine delivers quick acceleration. The cabin quality is great and has plenty of room for five adults but its infotainment interface isn't intuitive. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee's infotainment system is easy to use.

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport provides a lot of features for the money. It is much quicker on the road and boasts better ride quality than the Grand Cherokee. Both the SUVs are spacious on the inside but the Santa Fe Sport's cabin is more stylish and practical. Buyers will also be happy with its lengthy warranty.

Final Verdict

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a perfect package with all of the essential features and a capable powertrain on the inside, with multiple engine options ranging from powerful to insanely powerful along with a traditional Jeep design, good fuel economy, and of course superb offroading capabilities. The Jeep offers a well-built interior, a plush ride. The 2015 edition of the Jeep Grand Cherokee even though is not a very fresh and attractive design, does deliver functionality, power, and comfort along with a good interior making it a highly competitive car in the segment.
