Overview

This isn’t the most enthusiastic segment for buyers, the compact hatchback exists for budget buyers, who just want to travel from point A to point B as efficiently as possible. For these kinds of purposes, where one needs to accomplish some errands and boring but important tasks, vehicles like the Chevrolet Spark becomes a perfect choice, as it’s super convenient to maneuver them due to their lightweight chassis.

We Recommend

We recommend going with the mid-level trim Chevrolet Spark 1LT and even in this trim opt for the automatic transmission, surely it may cost you slightly more than the base trim but it has some quite decent standard features like foglights, power-adjustable ORVM, steering mounted audio/phone controls, Theft-deterrent and 6-speaker audio system. All these features with an automatic gearbox will make your ride experience much more convenient and hassle-free.

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

The Chevrolet offers only one engine and drivetrain option in Spark hatchback but the two transmission options make this vehicle desirable to the audience. The 1.4-liter, inline-four gas engine of the 2016 Chevy Spark produces a decent power of 98 hp and a peak torque value of 94 lb-ft, all the power, and torque produced by Spark’s powerhouse is sent to the front two wheels with the aid of FWD system.

The I-4 gas engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard but Chevrolet also offers each trim level with single-speed automatic transmission which certainly makes both lives and rides hassle-free on the road full of traffic. The Spark with manual transmission can achieve 60mph speed from rest position within 10.8 seconds and it completes the quarter-mile run in 18.2 seconds. All these numbers state how slow this vehicle is and it will take its own time to accelerate on highways.

Every vehicle in this segment has an inline-four gas engine under its hood which sends all the power to front wheels with an FWD system but Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent Hatchback are the only hatchbacks that have a standard 6-speed manual gearbox mated to the engine. Hyundai Accent stands tall with the most powerful engine with 137 hp power followed by the 130hp & 120hp engines of Honda and Ford respectively. Chevrolet Spark lets us down with poor specs and performance, it’s the only vehicle with such performance.

Interior
7.1/10

The 2016 Chevrolet Spark supports a seating capacity of 4 passengers including the rider, it might not feel sufficient as other vehicles come with a seating capacity of 5. Most of the cabin is covered with hard and cheap painted plastic but Chevrolet has done a good job by keeping the interior design simple yet modern but all seems reasonable at a price point of $13,535 and one shouldn’t complain about that.

The seating comfort on the front row is decent but not the best, Chevrolet Spark lacks legroom in both the front and rear row while the front row also has some shoulder room issues. Other than that, the base trim features manually adjustable seats with fabric upholstery but if one wants features like heated seats with leather-wrapped steering and leather upholstery then one might consider going with the 2LT trim.

Out of all four vehicles in the competition, Chevrolet Spark is the only hatchback with a seating capacity of 4 whereas others can occupy 5. When it comes to the first row, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent Hatchback have balanced dimensions, after them comes to the Ford Fiesta with slightly less shoulder & headroom. On the rear row, Honda Fit takes the trophy of the most spacious and comfortable compact car as it leaves behind every car in terms of legroom, whereas Hyundai now comes to the second position followed by the Spark. Some highlights of the interior features of Chevy Spark are:

  • Single-zone manual AC
  • 60-40 split-folding rear seats
  • Trip computer & Outside temp gauge
  • Manually tilt-only steering wheel
  • Chevy’s OnStar telematics system
  • Carpeted floor mats (on upper trims)
  • Steering mounted audio & phone controls (on upper trims)
  • Heated front seats (on 2LT)
  • Rear park assist with audible warning

How intuitive is the infotainment unit?

Not much is expected from this segment when it comes to the entertainment of the occupants, just like every other vehicle in this compact hatchback segment, Chevrolet Spark features a basic infotainment system. The system includes a 7-inch color touchscreen, AM/FM stereo with seek-scan, digital clock, Bluetooth/AUX audio streaming, a USB port, standard Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto smartphone integration, and lastly 4-speaker audio system. All these features make a person’s ride enjoyable and easygoing. Some highlights of the infotainment system are:

  • 4G LTE WiFi hotspot
  • MyLink infotainment system
  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth phone & audio connectivity
  • USB charging port
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Four-speaker audio system with AUX audio input
  • Six speaker audio system (on upper trims)
  • Satellite radio (on upper trims)

Exterior
6.0/10

For the 2016 Spark, Chevrolet has completely redesigned this vehicle with an all-new chassis which is quite nimble on its wheels, plus this year’s model also experiences some additional features too. The front fascia looks really cool and slightly stylish with those sharp automatic headlights while the chrome trims around the front grille and fog lamps with Chevrolet badge in the middle further enhance its looks.

The side profile has some aggressive lines and curves but most of the side profile look is basic, other than that the base trim comes with the 15-inch alloy wheels and the upper trim gets the machined finished gray wheels which somewhat improves the basic looks of this hatchback. Nothing much is happening at the rear side but Spark does get some unique taillights and bumper reflectors.

As per the data mentioned above, Chevrolet Spark seems the lightest hatchback with a curb weight of just 2248 pounds while others in the competition fall around 2500 pounds weight category. Chevrolet isn’t only the lightest but also the shortest in length and wheelbase which certainly gives it an upper edge while maneuvering through tight city conditions. Hyundai Accent is also special in its own way as its height and width ratio with somewhat less weight than Ford and Honda keeps it stable on turns but its long wheelbase might restrict its movement in tight situations. Some highlights of features on Chevy Spark exterior are:

  • 15-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Rearview Camera
  • Foglights (on upper trims)
  • Power-adjustable ORVM (on upper trims)
  • Remote keyless entry (on upper trims)
