Modern meets Retro in Mustang

Pros

Like the retro / modern styling, Performance

Cons

Stereo could be higher end, Exhaust note could be little louder

I have owned my Mustang for over 2 years now. I bought the Ecoboost for the combination of reasonably strong performance and 30 MPG on the highway. The car has not disappointed at all. I really have like this model year style since the day I saw it. The car is very comfortable to drive and has lots of creature comforts with the Ecoboost Premium package it has. The interior is good quality a... Read more

2016 Ford Mustang Review

The mighty Mustang arrives in 2016 with three new packages which add in more features with an already equipped model. The 2016 Ford Mustang is equipped with multiple engine options that help provide exceptional power output and overall performance.

The Ford Mustang has been the ace card that has racked up innumerable sales for the brand. Credit it to the way it looks or performs, either way, the Mustang builds a favorable reputation in the segment. For the MY 2016, Ford has brought about noticeable changes to their bread-winning member. It now sports improved exterior packages and a new infotainment system. The trim line-up also includes the newly launched Shelby GT 350 and Shelby GT 350R, for higher performance.

Priced at $24,145 the 2016 Ford Mustang goes up against the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro, Subaru BR-Z, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The base engine comes with a V6 layout and includes a 6-speed manual transmission. An inline 4 powertrain is also available to make it more efficient. It is the epitome of performance and handling as can be expected from an American muscle car.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2016 Ford Mustang mainly comes in five main trims, namely V6 Coupe, EcoBoost Coupe, EcoBoost Premium Coupe. The V6 Coupe is the cheapest one and comes at a price sticker of $24,145 while the top-end EcoBoost Premium Coupe comes at around $29,645. The base trim is the only trim to feature a V6 engine, both the upper trims have an inline 4 setup that is lower on power but high on efficiency.

We Recommend

The V6 Coupe trim is cheap and is more power-packed. So, it is focused on performance rather than on anything else. However, it still has some features that make it worth considering. For the price of $24,145, you get a powerful V6 motor, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry, and many others. So, it’s our recommendation to go with this trim.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2016 Ford Mustang V6 Coupe is powered by a 3.7 Liter V6 engine. The engine is capable of churning out 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. With the help of a 6-speed manual transmission, the power from the engine is delivered through wheels. Being a front-engine car, it showcases a rear-wheel-drive layout. The engine has enough power to overtake cars in highway passing. The feedback from the steering wheel is tight and is very noble around corners.

Apparently, the 2016 Ford Mustang is the most powerful car in the segment because of its V6 engine which delivers power more than its rivals. The Chevrolet Camaro with its inline 4 engine gives a tight competition to the Mustang producing 275 horsepower. The 2016 Subaru BR-Z and Mazda MX-5 Miata have lower outputs. All competitors share a similar drivetrain and transmission setup, however, differ in engine options.

2016 Ford Mustang Acceleration

The 2016 Ford Mustang is the quickest in the segment. It accelerates to the red line, to bestow neat and linear acceleration. The midsize coupe with its V6 engine option accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a matter of 5.3 seconds. The quarter-mile mark can be achieved in 13.9 seconds, while it records a top speed of 155 MPH. With the other engine options, the Ford Mustang manages better performance, being able to dust all of its competitors easily.

On the other hand, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and Mazda MX-5 Miatas are the only coupes that come close to the Ford Mustang in the 60mph acceleration test, clocking 5.4 and 5.6 seconds, respectively. However, in the quarter-mile run, the 2016 Camaro falls to last place alongside the 2016 Subaru BR-Z, while the 2016 MX-5 Miata continues to rank second managing a time of 14.5 seconds.

2016 Ford Mustang Ride and Handling

The 2016 Ford Mustang will impress you with its agility and nimbleness. The versatility to shift from a smooth to quick-firing ride makes it an advantageous choice over its counterparts. While the V6 engine option is an all-around option with its smooth and autonomous gear changing 6-speed manual transmission, the turbocharged Ecoboost 4-cylinder and V8 engine have unmatched prowess. Despite the growling sound note of the V8 engine, the tranquility of the cabin is a commonality between each trim option.  Like the transmission, the suspension system is sophisticated and refined and a standard rear-wheel-drive option works well for the vehicle. However, it lacks the ability to handle itself on rough patches. Consequently, uneven terrains are not an option with the 2016 Mustang.

2016 Ford Mustang Braking Performance

The 2016 Ford Mustang features a rather large set of brakes when compared to its direct rivals, measuring 12.6-inch at the front and rear. However, its curb weight is an essential factor hindering its capabilities. Consequently, when decelerating from 60mph to a halt, the 2016 Mustang covers 120ft of ground.

In the segment, while the braking capabilities of the 2016 Subaru BR-Z and Chevrolet Camaro are not known, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is an undisputed winner. While it features a smaller set of brakes measuring 11-inch at the front and back, its lighter curb weight directly helps in improving its performance. The Mazda covers 111ft when coming to a standstill from the 60 MPH mark.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2016 Ford Mustang V6 Coupe delivers an economy of 17 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. The V6 engine is powerful and is targeted towards performance, not economy. So, expecting results similar to an efficient sedan would just let us down. However, the EcoBoost engine, which is a turbocharged four-cylinder unit has better efficiency averaging 25 MPG.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the most fuel-efficient as is quite clear from the above figures clocking 30 MPG. The second in line is the Subaru BR-Z, followed by the Camaro averaging 25 and 24 MPG, respectively. The Camaro here has an advantage over the Mustang as it comes with a larger tank capacity of 19 gallons, which results in producing a better range of 399 and 570 miles in the city and on the highway respectively.

Interior
8.0/10

The Ford Mustang V6 Coupe can seat 4 passengers except for the Shelby GT350R trim. Though the front seats are comfortable and spacious, passengers seating in the rear seats can feel a bit cramped. The rear seat is low in legroom and headroom because of the sloping roofline. However, the interior of the Mustang has a modern look with a touch of retro styling.

The cabin of the 2016 Ford Mustang is uncomplicated and every usable element seems to be in the right place.  The quality of the materials and the fit and finish is first class and if asked about cabin visibility, it is pretty good too. External noises are skillfully masked and the insulated cabin isolates you from the hustle and bustle that goes on outside. To enhance an already holistic experience, Ford provides the Mustang with two equipment group packages to add to the existing feature load.

Here, it happens that the Mazda MX-5 Miata is the only car to accommodate a total of 2 passengers. All the others in the competition have a rear seating position. The 2016 Ford Mustang has the best space both up front and at the rear. However, if closely noticed space is comparable and it's the rear seats that are suited best for kids and cargo.

2016 Ford Mustang interior features include:

  • Power steering
  • Power Mirrors
  • Keyless entry
  • Auto-off headlights
  • Steering wheel controls

2016 Ford Mustang Infotainment System

The new SYNC 3 infotainment system now replaces the old MyFord Touch, which is a very good gesture from Ford. A long list of standard features is also available, which includes Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and many others. The infotainment system can now be controlled by voice controls. Another standard feature included in the Mustang now helps in recording lap times and performance data, which is very useful for enthusiast drivers.

Some of the infotainment features present in the 2016 Ford Mustang Coupe are as follows:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB Port
  • Voice controls
  • Ford SYNC 3
  • MyKey
  • 12-speaker Shaker Audio System(optional)

2016 Ford Mustang Cargo Capacity

The 2016 Ford Mustang is undoubtedly the most practical midsize coupe among the lot. It manages a total cargo capacity of 13.5 cubic feet, which is ample for a car in a coupe segment, considering that buyers may not be using the boot too often.

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2016 Ford Mustang resembles a typical coupe. The exterior design flaunts a slender roofline with a big bonnet in the front. The big bonnet houses the mighty powerplant. In the front grille, you get to see the Mustang logo. Being a coupe, it has two doors that open and the front seats that fold down to give entry to the rear.

While the 2016 Ford Mustang Convertible with its soft-top roof has a better appeal, the coupe is also undeniably striking. It weighs 3,526 lbs and is the longest, widest, and tallest in the segment, measuring 188.3, 75.4, and 54.4 inches respectively. While its ground clearance is not known, the wheelbase of 107.1 inches is not the longest.

When the overall length of the coupe is taken into consideration, it can be seen that the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang are quite similar in length. The Mazda and the Subaru could not compete with the duo. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has the longest wheelbase of 110.7 inches. On the other hand, the Subaru BR-Z and Mazda MX-5 Miata share a similar ground clearance of 4.9 inches. Some of the exterior features include:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • The front license plate bracket
  • Over the top Racing stripe
  • Hands-free entry
  • Rear Spoiler

Safety
9.7/10

The 2016 Ford Mustang has a pretty good safety score. It performed very well in the crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) has tested it, and it has achieved a 5-star overall rating. Even the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety(IIHS) has evaluated it and it has received an overall score of ‘Good,’ which is the highest rating the IIHS offers.

So, you can be pretty sure that the Mustang does not lack anything in terms of providing safety to its occupants. Some of the safety features that are present in the Ford Mustang are as follows:

  • Rear-view camera
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Forward collision warning
  • Cross-traffic Alert
  • Brake Assist
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring

Competition
7.0/10

2016 Ford Mustang vs 2016 Chevrolet Camaro

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro comes equipped with an almost equally-powered inline-4 engine that produces similar outputs. It manages similar acceleration capabilities off-the-line, but slows over, eventually. But the Chevy manages better fuel efficiency, a higher range, and a larger fuel capacity. On the inside, both coupes have similar interior space, with the rear seat being a tad bit cramped. However, the infotainment system lacks the intuitiveness the new SYNC 3 system provides. It's similar in dimensions, but the 2016 Ford Mustang is the better choice, given its striking design, aplomb handling, and finer interior build.

2016 Ford Mustang vs 2016 Subaru BR-Z

Off-the-top of our head, the 2016 Subaru BR-Z is shorter, has lower interior space, and underwhelming boot size. Its engine churns out lower outputs and even the acceleration timings differ, rather considerably. However, like the Chevrolet Camaro, it manages higher fuel efficiency. While it can seat four passengers, the rear seats are best suited for kids or cargo. Though it's a similar story with the 2016 Ford Mustang, the midsize coupe provides an extra bit of refinement and passenger/cargo space.

2016 Ford Mustang vs 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata has all the right ingredients for a subcompact convertible. With its smaller proportions, an appropriately tuned engine that grants almost class-leading performance. Additionally, it is highly efficient and manages a higher range. Even in terms of braking capabilities, the 2016 MX-5 Miata is rather superior. However, it can seat two passengers only and has a lower space for the occupants. Even its trunk volume is smaller and the 2016 Ford Mustang has a better visual appearance and better road presence.

Final Verdict

The Ford Mustang is known mainly for its masculinity and athleticism. Peaked at the hardcore driving enthusiast, it’s a V6 engine for the base trim. Interior wise, the car is quite modern, with seats that offer ample comfort. Exterior wise, it has all the design aesthetics to make it look like a modern muscle car. A high safety rating also makes it a car worth buying.
