About 2017 Ford Escape

3.8

Overall Rating

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard with the base, while a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine powers the SE and Titanium trim. There is also a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes as optional.

Among a crop of great contenders, stands the 2017 Ford Escape. It receives style and power upgrades along with improved cargo storage and an updated infotainment system. The chassis now looks sportier than most in the competition, and the overall look of the Escape is quite stylish.

It has a lineup of powerful engines that responds to every need of the throttle offering a comfortable and pleasant ride. The Ford Escape can be said to be a good option in the compact SUV segment. It has ample passenger and cargo space, along with a well-built interior cabin. However, one downside of it is that it is low on fuel mileage.

We would recommend going with the Ford Escape SE trim with the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as it delivers strong acceleration along with reasonable mileage. You can also opt for the various stand-alone packages and pick and choose features according to your need.

It has been running well, except now we have a few minor issues that dealership won't fix. We do get free oil changes for life that's a plus ! Also have tire insurance as well, but we do have a check engine light on and a warning sign saying engine fault service. Cons

To many engine issues, Not long enough warranties

I got my escape as a certified pre-owned I had it not even a year and the entire engine gave out and I've heard nothing but bad things about the engines in escapes.. also bad transmissions I liked the car besides all the complications

2017 Ford Escape Review

Pros

  • powerful engine options
  • Plethora of tech options
  • Ample cargo space
  • Nimble handling

Cons

  • Base model only available with 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine
  • Antiquated dashboard design with small buttons

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard with the base, while a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine powers the SE and Titanium trim. There is also a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes as optional.

Overview

Among a crop of great contenders, stands the 2017 Ford Escape. It receives style and power upgrades along with improved cargo storage and an updated infotainment system. The chassis now looks sportier than most in the competition, and the overall look of the Escape is quite stylish.

It has a lineup of powerful engines that responds to every need of the throttle offering a comfortable and pleasant ride. The Ford Escape can be said to be a good option in the compact SUV segment. It has ample passenger and cargo space, along with a well-built interior cabin. However, one downside of it is that it is low on fuel mileage.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Ford Escape is available in three trim levels, namely S, SE, and Titanium. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard with the base trim, while the SE and Titanium get a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is optional on both the trim. A six-speed automatic transmission along with a front-wheel drive comes standard.

Here is a list of the key features that are available with the trims of the 2017 Ford Escape:

We would recommend going with the Ford Escape SE trim with the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as it delivers strong acceleration along with reasonable mileage. You can also opt for the various stand-alone packages and pick and choose features according to your need.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

There is a trio of powerful engines that powers the 2017 Ford Escape. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which is rated at 168 horsepower and 170-pound-feet of torque. The SE trim meanwhile is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that churns out 179 horsepower and 177-pound-feet of torque. Optional for SE and Titanium trim is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is rated at 245 horsepower and 275-pound-feet of torque. All the engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

All the engines are quite powerful to pull this vehicle. The power from the engine is delivered to the front wheels as standard, while there is an option to opt for an AWD setup for the SE and Titanium trim. The base S trim is available in a single-engine configuration. The 6-speed automatic transmission is smooth, but the powertrain is lethargic and is the slowest among the competitors.

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is the most powerful car in this comparison with a maximum power output of 200 hp. The second position is occupied by the Mazda CX-5 with 187 hp, followed by the Honda CR-V. All the vehicles in this comparison are equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the Honda CR-V gets a CVT transmission.

2017 Ford Escape 0-60 MPH Acceleration

The base Ford Escape equipped with the 2.5-liter engine accelerates from 0-60 mph in 9.1 seconds, which is the slowest in the class. However, if you want more power, then you can opt for the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which goes from 0 to 60 in less than seven seconds. The base engine of the SUV takes 6.8 seconds to complete a quarter-mile.

A similar performance is seen in the quarter-mile acceleration where the Escape takes around 16.8 seconds to cover the distance. The Volkswagen Tiguan is the quickest in 0-60 mph acceleration in 8.3 seconds but lacks behind on a quarter-mile stretch.

As can be seen, Volkswagen gets the votes of the people for the best acceleration timing. Though it could not compete with the Mazda CX-5 in the quarter-mile acceleration as the Mazda overtakes everyone in the segment to land itself up in the top position in the quarter-mile sprint. Top Speed is another segment and here also the Volkswagen Tiguan emerges victorious.

2017 Ford Escape Braking and Handling

The 2017 Ford Escape comes standard with a front-wheel-drive with an option to upgrade to an all-wheel-drive setup. This compact SUV feels more athletic than most of its competitors. The steering feels sharp while the well-tuned suspension makes the ride smooth. The new base engine is not the quickest and thus takes away the driving fun. The 2017 Ford Escape comes with an impressive set of brakes, with 12.8 inches at the front and 12.0 inches at the rear.

The Ford Escape gets the largest brake rotors that can’t be seen in any other competitor. So, it can be expected it is going to perform well. However, the car is quite heavy with a curb weight of 3515 lbs which provides a hindrance in the braking performance. But it can be seen the Ford Escape performs outstandingly and well beyond our expectations having a 60-0 mph stopping distance of just 112 ft.

Following the Ford Escape, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a comparatively bigger set of brakes than the remaining two. Even with smaller brake discs, the Honda CR-V provides a great braking performance with 0-60 mph covered in just 117 feet. The Mazda CX-5 lacks here with a braking distance of 126 feet. Thus the Ford Escape leads this segment.

2017 Ford Escape Towing Capacity

If you feel that towing a large amount of load is going to a big part of your requirement, then go with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can tow up to 3,500 pounds. These numbers are impressive considering what the competitors are offering and should be enough to pull a small boat. But the base engine is not that powerful and thus offers a maximum towing capacity of just 1500 pounds.

Fuel Economy
6.7/10

The 2017 Ford Escape is not the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class. The base 2.5-liter engine checks in with 21 mpg city, 29 highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the front-wheel-drive gets 23/30/26 mpg. Add all-wheel drive, and that rating falls to 22/28/24 mpg. The 2.0-liter turbo 4 meanwhile is listed at 22/29/25 mpg with the front-wheel drive and 20/27/23 with the AWD.

As already discussed the Ford Escape is not the most fuel-efficient. Also, it is not the least as Volkswagen takes that spot with a combined fuel economy of 22 mpg. The most fuel-efficient in the segment is the Honda CR-V followed by the Mazda CX-5. With a tank capacity of 15.7 gallons, the Ford Escape can happily run for 330 miles on the city and 445 miles on the highway.

Interior
7.0/10

The interior design of the 2017 Ford Escape is quite decent in this segment. The quality of materials used in the interior is quite good. While the base trims get cloth upholstery, the higher trims get much more comfortable leather upholstery. The interior provides considerable spacing to all the passengers. The center console is easily accessible from the front row and supports are the control buttons.

Ingress and egress are made easy by the big wide opening doors. The eight-way power driver seat in the SE trim along with manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel combines to help the driver get a good view of the road. Escape seats five, and there is plenty of space and support for the passengers in the front row. The rear seat also has an ample amount of head and legroom but fails to impress when it comes to what competitors are offering.

  • 8-way power-adjustable driver seat

  • Ford MyKey System

Exterior
8.1/10

The 2017 Ford Escape has gained some visual refinement. For 2017, Ford has retained all the same dimensions in length, width, and height from the previous year. Upgrades have been done in the cosmetic part, and that includes new front and rear styling. With the new styling, it has been more aerodynamic, and the noise levels have reduced considerably.

The exterior design of the Ford Escape is quite straightforward with any fancy design elements or accessories. The front chrome grille, sleek headlamps, and a raised rear gives it a typical compact crossover SUV proportions. The bigger 19-inch wheels go very well with the exterior design and thus completes the look of the vehicle.

Here are a few of the exterior features of the 2017 Ford Escape:

  • Alloy wheels
  • Automatic headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Foglights
  • Keyless entry keypad
  • Rear privacy glass

Competition
7.0/10

2017 Ford Escape Vs Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the best compact SUVs in the segment and is a better vehicle than the Escape. Though the Escape can easily accommodate adults in the second row, the CR-V offers slightly better legroom in the second row. Honda also leads when it comes to cargo space with 76 cubic feet.

2017 Ford Escape Vs Volkswagen Tiguan

The 2017 Ford Escape is a better SUV than the Volkswagen Tiguan. It offers better mileage and towing capacity. Even in terms of space, Ford offers better legroom in the first row and also has better cargo capacity. When compared to the sticker price, Ford Escape is more than $1000 cheaper than Tiguan, making it a better option of the two.

2017 Ford Escape Vs Mazda CX-5

Both these SUVs are well equipped to meet the demands of consumers. They both seat five, although Mazda offers more legroom in the second row than Escape. It also has better mileage and offers more cargo space than the Ford. When compared in engine power and torque, again Mazda holds an upper hand, which makes us lean towards it.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Escape is a solid choice to go with. It gets one of the best cabins in the class with high-quality material and a soothing overall design. Abundant passenger and cargo space make it one of the best family haulers at an affordable price. Apart from this, we cannot deny that other segments in the segment do bring some things which are missing from this American offering.
