The Range Rover Sport costs less than its larger brother the Range Rover. Still, it's almost as good off-road, as luxurious inside, and as imposing outside. Still, if you really must have the Range Rover, spend more and get one. For most of us, Sport is more than enough. HSE Dynamic comes out to be the best value for money proposition in the Range Rover Sport lineup.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport SE comes packed with a 3.0L supercharged V-6 engine along with an 8-speed automatic transmission that manages to give out an output of 340 bhp @ 6,500 rpm and 332 lb-ft @5,500. The engine delivers the power smoothly and stays hushed through most of the rev range.

The Porsche Cayenne also offers a V6, but is considerably less on power at 300 bhp. The Volvo XC90 only offers Turbo-supercharged Inline-4, but the Q7 is available with a V6. Bothe Audi and Volvo revolve around the power of 250+ hp. When compared in torque figures, again Range Rover Sport takes the top spot with 332 lb-ft.

Acceleration

Despite having the most powerful engine amongst the competition, Range Rover Sport SE is one of the slowest cars in terms of acceleration as it does 0-60mph is only 7.1 sec and the quarter-mile timing is 13.9 sec. 

The fastest car compared here is the Volvo XC90, which can do 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds. It is followed by the Audi Q7 and the Range Rover. The Porsche Cayenne trails all the cars with a 0-60 mph time of 7.3 seconds.

Riding and Handling

The Range Rover Sport provides a deeply cushioned ride that gobbles up pavement imperfection with ease. And being a Range Rover, off-road performance is right there with the best in class. The handling is sufficiently sharp for an SUV, but if you are specifically looking into adventures of enjoying handling phenomena, go for the Cayenne.

Braking

The Range Rover Sport gets 14.3-inch brake rotors up front and 13.8-inch brake rotors at the back. These can stop the 4,839 pounds SUV in 124 feet. That's average among the competition. The best performer is the Audi Q7 taking 120 feet to stop from 60 mph. All the cars are nearly the same in terms of braking performance.

Cars with lesser curb weight have an advantage over the others in terms of braking. 

Here, the lightest of the lot is the Volvo XC90, and the Range Rover Sport happily announces itself to be the heaviest. However, the Range Rover ties with the Volvo XC90 delivering the same stopping potential as its lighter counterpart delivers. Both the cars make a halt from 60-0mph in 124 ft. All that being said, it is the Audi Q7 who silently secures the first position in terms of braking.

Towing capacity

With a Towing Capacity of 7,716 pounds, the Range Rover Sport will easily pull large campers through grades. The competitors offer similar towing capacity except for the Volvo XC90. The XC90 is the only SUV compared here that is limited to a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

The Range Rover is no tree hugger. The supercharged V6 delivers 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The Combined EPA rating is 19 mpg. The most efficient car compared here is the Volvo XC90 thanks to its tine 4-cylinder engine.

It can be seen that the Volvo XC90 is quite efficient in this segment. The low displacement engine in Volvo helps it to achieve superior mileage figures. Same as the Volvo, the Audi Q7 also comes with a 2.0 Liter engine but it is not as efficient as the Volvo. The Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne are impressive with their huge tank capacity that helps the fuel-thirsty SUVs to achieve a higher range on the odometer.

The interior now has been updated for the Land Rover Range Rover Sport with impeccable comfortability. Also, the cabin is quiet, which adds some bonus to the interior. Only the engine growl can be heard in case of intense acceleration, otherwise the cabin is noise isolated from the exterior sounds.

For a person having interior space as the biggest priority in buying a car, then the Range Rover SE will impress. In the front, it has 39.5-inch headroom, 60.7-inch shoulder room, and 42.2-inch legroom. In the back, it’s 39.1/59.5/37.0 inches headroom, shoulder room, and legroom respectively.

Infotainment

The infotainment and other interior features are controlled by the new Touch Pro Duo System. It sure looks futuristic and the display is sharp which enhances the look of the infotainment screen. However, the system is quite slow and does not respond quickly to user inputs. At the same time, it is complicated to use too.

Of all the cargo spaces on offer the Volvo XC90, Volvo’s flagship SUV emerges victorious. It has the highest cargo space of 41.8 cu-ft in the rival SUV segment. The Range Rover reserves for itself the second place in the lot with a cargo capacity of 24.8 cu-ft followed by the Porsche Cayenne. The Audi Q7 is a big car but it does miss out on offering a decent cargo space. 

At 4839 pounds, the Range Rover Sport SE is the heaviest among the cars compared here. Despite the weight, the Range Rover is actually the smallest three-row SUV compared here. The impressive ground clearance of 8.7 inches hints at its off-road prowess.

No doubt, the Range Rover Sport is one of the most elegant looking SUVs in the premium SUV segment. It looks big with a floating roof and a sporty character. The Sport moniker in the name does justice by putting up blacked-out roof pillars and a thick grille at the front. Also, the bulging wheel arches and sloped roofline reveals it’s sporty DNA. The Volvo XC90 brings a unique and refreshing Swedish flavor to the increasingly homogeneous luxury SUV market. The XC90 is spacious, supremely comfortable, and comes with the safety many associates with a Volvo.

However, the Range Rover is decidedly better off-road and comes with a much better engine.

Land Rover Sport vs. Audi Q7 2.0T Premium Quattro

The Audi Q7 offers 7 seats, a spacious interior, a smooth ride, and a stable high-speed ride. It looks sharp but elegantly simple in typical Audi fashion and will satisfy anyone in the market for a large luxury SUV. However, the Range Rover packs more charm and off-road credibility.

The 2018 Range Rover Sport brings in all the virtues of its big brother The Range Rover at a lower asking price. Its interior features the softest of leathers, all the bells and whistles found on a modern luxury SUV, and pillowy ride quality.

The engine is potent and the transmission is smooth all topped off with legendary off-road capability. However, the reliability history of the Range Rover leaves a lot to be desired and if that bothers you, consider the Germans.
