2019 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

Pros

  • Seating for up to nine people
  • Impressive towing capacity from the standard V8 engine
  • Quiet and nicely trimmed cabin
  • Optional 6.2-liter V8 provides additional power and capability

Cons

  • High trunk floor leads to a reduction in cargo space
  • Below average brake performance
  • Handling in tight spaces is compromised due to big size

The big and powerful Tahoe in 2019 is here and will surely be praised by full-size SUV lovers. Unlike a common crossover SUV that is usually based on a Sedan, the Tahoe is based on a truck architecture.

Overview

The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe boasts practical space for 8 and good towing ability, making it a great large SUV. Chevy offers two powerful V8 engines making the 2019 Tahoe a popular seller. This large SUV is easy to drive but has a relatively poor fuel economy. The Tahoe's quiet cabin, comfortable seating, and a long list of tech features come at a starting price of $49,295. The Top-end Tahoe Premier goes up to $66,995.

In addition, both engines come with a cylinder deactivation system as a standard tech, which helps boost the miles per gallons figures. The Tahoe offers an excellent infotainment system but is rated subpar for the cargo space.  Avaialble with RWD or AWD, the Chevy Tahoe competes against the Ford Expedition and Nissan Armada in the full-size SUV class. Let's find out should you buy a Chevy Tahoe or not? Designed to be practical and luxurious at the same time, is the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe a good SUV?

Buying Advice

We would go for the LT trim as it comes with an array of respectable standard features such as a power-adjustable driver's seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an upgraded premium stereo. The Tahoe LT offers a long list of options to choose from. We also liked the latest 6.2-liter V8 powertrain that is offered with the Premier trim.

Engine and Performance
6.9/10

The 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engine in the 2019 Chevy Tahoe, makes it a capable SUV.  With the standard V8, Chevy Tahoe gets 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, the power-torque ratio is enough to pull this heavy 5355 lbs SUV. The 6-speed automatic transmission is standard while a 10-speed automatic is an available option. With either RWD or AWD drivetrain, the Tahoe is good to drive. Though the bigger V8 block is more capable and powerful, it returns less fuel economy. The Tahoe can tow up to 8,600 pounds when properly equipped.

The Tahoe roves like crazy and being built on the body-on-frame architecture, the car offers a balanced ride and handling. The ride quality is comfy in long routes, thanks to its large size. It offers a turning radius of 19.5 inches, which is again decent for an SUV.  The Magnetic Rise Control Suspension adjusts the shocks automatically on rough pavements.

The base engine is slow at first but picks up slowly and sprints zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The Ford with its smaller V6 is a bit quicker in this matter and it's quicker than both the Armada and the Tahoe. Despite having a smaller engine, the Expedition produces the most torque at 470 lb-ft hitting as early as 3500 rpm. The Nissan Armada accelerates quickly and with 390 hp it is the most powerful vehicle, but not as powerful as the optional 6.2-liter Corvette-sourced V8 engine in the Tahoe.

Fuel Economy
6.1/10

The Chevy Tahoe offers a decent fuel economy in the city at 15 mpg and 22 mpg on the highway. The V8–powered Tahoe with a six-speed automatic feel underpowered. The more powerful 6.2-liter engine MPG ratings exceeded the smaller block by 3 mpg, for 22 mpg on the highway.

Interior
7.5/10

Once you enter inside the 2019 Tahoe, you'll find wide and cushy seats that are ideal for long trips. The cabin offers a seating capacity for over 9 people. The second row is equally enjoyable whether you opt for the bench seats or bucket seats. The cabin is spacious and airy around the first two rows. However, the Tahoe's third-row offers very little space with limited legroom that can only accommodate small children or short people.

The steering wheel's telescopic range is not satisfactory but the power-adjustable pedals are a boon. The power folds rear seats make the third row easily accessible. Competitors in this segment offer similar space on the interior front.

2019 Chevrolet Tahoe: Infotainment System

The infotainment system comprises an 8-inch touchscreen that comes integrated with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When it comes to the standard tech, Tahoe outshines its competitors. Competition
6.0/10

2019 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. Ford Expedition

When it comes to towing capability, the Ford Expedition is Tahoe's unbeaten rival. The Expedition beats Tahoe with a maximum towing capacity of up to 9000 pounds. The Expedition offers more cargo space than the Tahoe. Expeditions turbocharged V6 is also more powerful than the Tahoe. The Tahoe, on the other hand, offers a quiet and pleasant interior.

2019 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. Nissan Armada

Nissan Armada offers comfortable seating across all the rows. The Tahoe offers more headroom and legroom on the front seats. Also, due to a smaller turning radius, maneuvering is quite easy with Chevy Tahoe. In terms of power, the Armada is a clear winner here. Nissan Armada is priced lower than Tahoe, but Tahoe offers better towing and fuel efficiency.

Final Verdict

We don't say that the Chevy Tahoe is the best but we can say that it's better than most of the rivals in the class. The standard features that come with the Tahoe are just making the SUV lovable. If you are looking for an all-around big-size SUV, a better choice can be Nissan Armada or Ford Expedition. Tahoe, on the other hand, offers good handling in comparison to the rivals.
