About 2019 Toyota Sienna

3.4

Overall Rating

Starting at $32,160 with a 3.5L V6 engine, Toyota has given the tame looking minivan a heart of a demon, paired to the 8-speed automatic transmission, makes a deadly combination.

Even while the trend on owning a minivan is seeing a steady decline, there are some brands that continue to offer a value for money and versatile minivans. The Toyota Sienna minivan is one such example which offers a first in class all-wheel-drive setup and also loads of standard driver-assist features. However, when it comes to the style quotient, it lacks behind its rivals. The 2019 model year is part of the same generation as its predecessor but it offers minor changes and updates for a refreshed experience.

The Toyota Sienna SE is the best value for money trim to buy in the lineup with massive optional 19-inch wheels, perforated leather interior, and a power liftgate. It has the best mix of features and affordability in the trim lineup.

2019 Toyota Sienna Review

Pros

  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Quick acceleration of the V6 engine
  • Still, the only minivan to offer all-wheel drive
  • A spacious and versatile cabin

Cons

  • Not as feature-loaded as its rivals
  • Below-average safety score for the class

Starting at $32,160 with a 3.5L V6 engine, Toyota has given the tame looking minivan a heart of a demon, paired to the 8-speed automatic transmission, makes a deadly combination.

Overview

Even while the trend on owning a minivan is seeing a steady decline, there are some brands that continue to offer a value for money and versatile minivans. However, when it comes to the style quotient, it lacks behind its rivals. The 2019 model year is part of the same generation as its predecessor but it offers minor changes and updates for a refreshed experience.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 2019 Toyota Sienna with its 3.5L V6, makes 296 hp and 263 lb-ft torque. The engine makes more power than any of the competitive minivans in the segment and so is the torque. The engine may not rev like a sports coupe but you can pull away fast from intersections with smooth power delivery.

The 8-speed automatic transmission is unrefined as the ones you find in other minivans but better than the 6-speed from the Ford Flex. The Toyota makes more power than Chrysler Pacifica, making 287 hp, along with the Ford Flex. The Kia Sedona has the least power sent to the front wheels at 276 hp, from the 3.3L engine.

2019 Toyota Sienna 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration

This may not be the best criteria to judge a minivan, but the Toyota Sienna makes it from 0 to 60 miles an hour in 7 seconds flat, and then through the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds. Despite the soft suspension and the initial squat, the minivan accelerates pretty well.

The fastest one from 0-60 mph is the Honda Odyssey taking merely 6.6 seconds, most Minivans can't manage that. Followed by the Ford Flex with 7.0 seconds on the clock. The Kia Sedona ties with the Grand Caravan taking the same time in the 60 mph sprint, however, the Dodge pulls ahead in the quarter-mile.

Ride and Handling

The Toyota Sienna's ride is unexpectedly soft and compliant, recommended for minivans during long journeys or if you're planning to spend most of the time in the cabin. Although the minivan is quite easygoing for the urbanscape, it gets quite cumbersome in maneuvering through parking lots. On the highways, the Sienna holds onto the tarmac pretty well and has decent driving dynamics.

The competition, however, benefits from driver-assist features like collision warning, which make the job of city driving and parking much easier. The Honda Odyssey and the updated Chrysler Pacifica handles well not only in the city but also on the highways.

Braking performance

The brakes are rather mushy and the minivan awkwardly lurches into a nosedive upon sudden braking. However, the brakes are decent enough for a minivan of this magnitude, and the brake fade upon continuous usage is virtually non-existent.

The braking distance has not been tested, but its larger size and magnitude would mean a bit more tarmac needed to stop than the rivals. The Kia Sedona exhibited the least stopping distance in the panic brake test compared to the Chrysler Pacifica and the Ford Flex which have been tested.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

Although untested by the EPA for fuel economy, the Sienna chugs like an Irish. With an average of 22 miles to the gallon combined fuel economy, it works well as a fleet vehicle. Comparatively, the other minivans in the segment also boast a similar fuel economy of 22 miles to the gallon, ergo the high gear ratios in the 9-speed transmission make the drive surprisingly efficient on highways.

The Toyota Sienna L minivan offers one of the best fuel economy figures in the city as well as on the highway. The Ford Flex SE on the other hand offers the worst fuel economy figures with 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The smaller 18.6 gallons of fuel tank capacity of the 2019 Ford Flex limits the maximum range to 428 miles.

Interior
7.5/10

Despite the comfortable cabin space and great visibility all around, the low headroom at the rear is rather disappointing. The interiors lack ergonomic foresight and the controls are awkwardly placed.

The front and second-row seats are spacious but the third row lacks the roominess that you get in a larger minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. Most minivans lack premium materials in the cabin, however, the Toyota is worse than the Chrysler and Kia, even in the top trims.

The Toyota Sienna is one of the minivans with the highest cargo volume in the segment. Stow the rear and third-row seats and you get plenty of room to store cargo. Along with that, the low loading and unloading height makes the minivan easy to pack your luggage in. The biggest cargo bay award goes to the Honda Odyssey, with 158 cubic feet volume, the Honda has no equal. The Chrysler and Dodge have equal capacities of 140 cubic feet at the rear. Here is a list of the interior features that are available with the 2019 Toyota Sienna:

  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable driver seat
  • Fabric/leather seats
  • Rear-seat entertainment system
  • Heated steering wheel

2019 Toyota Sienna infotainment system

There has been a lot of improvement in the infotainment system features that are available with the 2019 Toyota Sienna. The Toyota's Entune 3.0 infotainment system, standard across all trims, offers smartphone connectivity, navigation, and a premium audio system in the minivan.

With the higher trims you can upgrade to the JBL surround sound system as well as WiFi and 4G LTE connectivity. Here is a list of the infotainment features that are available with the 2019 Toyota Sienna:

  • Entune 3.0 infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Navigation system
  • Touchscreen display
  • USB port
  • Voice control

Exterior
3.0/10

The 2019 Toyota Sienna minivan is awkwardly designed to include edgy elements, but the end result is probably not what the engineers at Toyota expected. The huge plastic grille up front along with the slanting headlamps surround the Toyota logo in the middle. You can get side skirts and upgraded bumpers in the sportier trims which make the minivan look a tad better.

The Sienna is one of the minivans with ground clearance on the higher side, making the ride more compliant on rough stretches. However, Toyota is the shortest of the bunch, while Flex is the narrowest. The Chrysler is the tallest minivan among the competition, while the Honda odyssey sits the lowest to the ground. Here is a list of the exterior features that are available with the 2019 Toyota Sienna:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Roof rails
  • Power-sliding rear doors
  • Keyless entry
  • LED DRLs
  • Xenon headlights
  • Automatic wipers

Safety
8.9/10

The NHTSA has given the 2019 Toyota Sienna a full five stars in its crash test. However it had not received any accolades from the IIHS. It offer a long list of features which includes automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Other safety features on offer are:

  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Toyota Safety Sense
  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Rear Child Safety Locks
  • Back-Up Camera

Competition

Toyota Sienna vs Honda Odyssey

Despite the overpowering engine in the Toyota Sienna, the Honda pulls ahead with better features, better handling, well-laid interiors, and comfier seats. The engine may not be as brutal as the Toyota's but the smoother 9-speed transmission not only improves shifting but also saves fuel in higher gears. So, power aside, the Honda is a better minivan for your garage.

Toyota Sienna vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is one of the best-looking minivans in the class. With an equally impressive interior and engine. The transmission is much smoother on the Chrysler, however, the Pacifica gets you much more of the top-end power that you need for hauling trailers and campers up the inclines.

Toyota Sienna vs Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is a good-looking minivan in the segment, compared to the awkward front grille in the Toyota. On the inside, Toyota has a much better interior as well as much more advanced infotainment than the Kia. The engine on the Kia feels underpowered compared to the Toyota Sienna.

Final Verdict

The 2019 Toyota Sienna is a powerful and capable minivan with a spacious interior and advanced infotainment. In this minivan, you can carry up to 8 passengers comfortably and still have space left for storing cargo. This means that it is quite a practical minivan that offers oodles of features. The engine is efficient and smooth throughout the rev range and in comparison to the rivals, the Toyota Sienna offers impressive versatility if making a style statement is not your primary requirement.
