The 8-speed automatic transmission is unrefined as the ones you find in other minivans but better than the 6-speed from the Ford Flex. The Toyota makes more power than Chrysler Pacifica, making 287 hp, along with the Ford Flex. The Kia Sedona has the least power sent to the front wheels at 276 hp, from the 3.3L engine.

2019 Toyota Sienna 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration

This may not be the best criteria to judge a minivan, but the Toyota Sienna makes it from 0 to 60 miles an hour in 7 seconds flat, and then through the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds. Despite the soft suspension and the initial squat, the minivan accelerates pretty well.

The fastest one from 0-60 mph is the Honda Odyssey taking merely 6.6 seconds, most Minivans can't manage that. Followed by the Ford Flex with 7.0 seconds on the clock. The Kia Sedona ties with the Grand Caravan taking the same time in the 60 mph sprint, however, the Dodge pulls ahead in the quarter-mile.

Ride and Handling

The Toyota Sienna's ride is unexpectedly soft and compliant, recommended for minivans during long journeys or if you're planning to spend most of the time in the cabin. Although the minivan is quite easygoing for the urbanscape, it gets quite cumbersome in maneuvering through parking lots. On the highways, the Sienna holds onto the tarmac pretty well and has decent driving dynamics.

The competition, however, benefits from driver-assist features like collision warning, which make the job of city driving and parking much easier. The Honda Odyssey and the updated Chrysler Pacifica handles well not only in the city but also on the highways.

Braking performance

The brakes are rather mushy and the minivan awkwardly lurches into a nosedive upon sudden braking. However, the brakes are decent enough for a minivan of this magnitude, and the brake fade upon continuous usage is virtually non-existent.

The braking distance has not been tested, but its larger size and magnitude would mean a bit more tarmac needed to stop than the rivals. The Kia Sedona exhibited the least stopping distance in the panic brake test compared to the Chrysler Pacifica and the Ford Flex which have been tested.

Although untested by the EPA for fuel economy, the Sienna chugs like an Irish. With an average of 22 miles to the gallon combined fuel economy, it works well as a fleet vehicle. Comparatively, the other minivans in the segment also boast a similar fuel economy of 22 miles to the gallon, ergo the high gear ratios in the 9-speed transmission make the drive surprisingly efficient on highways.

The Toyota Sienna L minivan offers one of the best fuel economy figures in the city as well as on the highway. The Ford Flex SE on the other hand offers the worst fuel economy figures with 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The smaller 18.6 gallons of fuel tank capacity of the 2019 Ford Flex limits the maximum range to 428 miles. 

Despite the comfortable cabin space and great visibility all around, the low headroom at the rear is rather disappointing. The interiors lack ergonomic foresight and the controls are awkwardly placed.

The front and second-row seats are spacious but the third row lacks the roominess that you get in a larger minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. Most minivans lack premium materials in the cabin, however, the Toyota is worse than the Chrysler and Kia, even in the top trims.

The Toyota Sienna is one of the minivans with the highest cargo volume in the segment. Stow the rear and third-row seats and you get plenty of room to store cargo. Along with that, the low loading and unloading height makes the minivan easy to pack your luggage in. The biggest cargo bay award goes to the Honda Odyssey, with 158 cubic feet volume, the Honda has no equal. The Chrysler and Dodge have equal capacities of 140 cubic feet at the rear. The Chrysler Pacifica is one of the best-looking minivans in the class. With an equally impressive interior and engine. The transmission is much smoother on the Chrysler, however, the Pacifica gets you much more of the top-end power that you need for hauling trailers and campers up the inclines.

Toyota Sienna vs Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is a good-looking minivan in the segment, compared to the awkward front grille in the Toyota. On the inside, Toyota has a much better interior as well as much more advanced infotainment than the Kia. The engine on the Kia feels underpowered compared to the Toyota Sienna.

The 2019 Toyota Sienna is a powerful and capable minivan with a spacious interior and advanced infotainment. In this minivan, you can carry up to 8 passengers comfortably and still have space left for storing cargo. This means that it is quite a practical minivan that offers oodles of features. The engine is efficient and smooth throughout the rev range and in comparison to the rivals, the Toyota Sienna offers impressive versatility if making a style statement is not your primary requirement.
