About 2020 Mclaren 720s

3.7

Overall Rating

Priced at around $300,000, the 720s is nowhere close to being cheap or affordable. It is something you’ll have to think about before putting your money down. But if you can and if you do, you would not be disappointed.

Have you ever thought about buying a supercar that can do 200 miles per hour in a flash and tackle corners with ease as well? Have you ever thought about buying a spaceship? Have you ever thought about buying a Mclaren 720S? Well, you cannot buy a spaceship but you can buy something that looks like one. The Mclaren 720S is probably as close as you can get to buy an actual spaceship.

For 2020, the McLaren 720S continues to sport an enlarged 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 rated at 710 hp and capable of doing 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. It also packs a modified carbon tub which is dubbed as the ‘Monocage II” and a redesigned cockpit.

The Mclaren 720s is offered with different options and packages. Which option to go for totally depends on the customer’s needs and requirements. If one likes performance, Mclaren offers the performance package. If one wants to go for comfort, there’s a Luxury package on offer that makes the interior just that more comfortable. And for those who seek a mix of both, there a Base 720s available as well.

  • Mind-numbing acceleration
  • Comfortable ride for everyday use

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

Probably the single most accomplished supercar we’ve ever driven  -Topgear.com

The Mclaren 720s is one of the most extreme and powerful vehicles on sale. It is powered by a 4-liter V8 assisted by a twin-turbo setup. What’s really impressive about the engine that it is actually assisted by a couple of “twin-scroll” turbochargers. This means that the turbo can spool up very quickly, providing an instant boost.

The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is capable of making 710 horses at 7250 RPM and 568 lb-ft of torque at 5500 RPM. The best part is that this engine feels stress-free throughout the rev range. Mclaren has made sure that there is no turbo lag and the 720 takes off as soon as you put the pedal to the metal.

The Mclaren 720S manages the 0-60 dash in a mind-numbing 2.7 seconds. Yes, 2.7 ticks from the factory. That is the definition of blisteringly fast. The Mclaren 720s breaches the quarter-mile mark in a very impressive 10.1 seconds.

In terms of displacement, the Lambo and the Ferrari have the biggest engine. Both of them are powered by a naturally aspirated 6.5L V12 motor. The Aston Martin is powered by a 5.2-liter V12. Yes, the Mclaren is the only one in this bunch that offers a V8 powertrain. However, the Mclaren can manage to give the other vehicles in this bunch a run for their money.

The twin-scroll turbochargers make sure that the 720 never feels out of boost. The Carbon mono cage is super light which is inspired by the P1. The complete carbon-fiber tub adds to the weight reduction which is quite necessary for a vehicle of this caliber. The 720s is equipped with Mclaren’s “Proactive Chassis Control II”. The 720 is equipped with 15.3 and 15-inch rotors in the front and rear respectively.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

a sophisticated braking setup acts as a torque-vectoring system, sending power to the wheel that needs it most - Kbb.com

Fuel economy is one area where the Mclaren really impressive. As long as you don’t feel like running sub 3 seconds 0-60 sprints, the 720 is expected to return a gas mileage of 15 under city conditions and 22 at highway speeds.

This leads to the 720 having a combined fuel economy of 18.1 miles to the gallon. These figures are mighty impressive for a vehicle having such caliber. The fact that the 4-liter V8 of the Mclaren is assisted by a twin-turbo setup.

The McLaren 720S Coupe and Spider offer an inviting cockpit that may surprise you with their spaciousness and features - Kbb.com

The 2020 McLaren 720S doesn’t just go fast, it also ensures both the driver and the passenger are well seated and comfortable when doing so. The interior is filled with high-quality materials all around. With wood, leather, and Alcantra covering most of the panels, the 720S is good enough as it is. If you want a more sporty feel, you can also go for the carbon fiber option. Every corner of the cabin can be illuminated as well.

The visibility is excellent. The A-pillars are thin to provide a wide view of the front, while the B-pillars can be made of glass to further improve the visibility. The rear view is a bit restricted, substantially so with the spoiler up. The sunroof is electrochromic and can be darkened or lightened with the push of a button. The front and back trunks of the 2020 McLaren 720S boasts a storage space of 5.3 cubic feet and 7.4 cubic-feet respectively.

McLaren does not offer much for this part of the car. There is an 8-inch central touchscreen for all trims. It is crisp and swift to operate, but the display easily washes off in bright light. You don’t get Android Auto but Apple CarPlay is supported. The default 4-speaker audio system suits you if you think the 4.0L V8 is the best soundtrack. However, for the music enthusiasts, McLaren offers an upgrade in the form of a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
