2021 Land Rover Defender Review

Pros

  • One of the most off-road capable vehicles on the planet
  • Smooth on-road ride quality
  • Responsive engine
  • Plush and practical cabin
  • Ample of tech

Cons

  • Low fuel economy
  • Optional accessories add a lot to the base price
  • Heavy cargo door

The brand Land Rover reopened the chapter of its prestigious nameplates with introducing the new Land Rover Defender in 2020; the car was completely redesigned from tip to toe for the 2020 model and the 2021 model will not get any new significant changes.

Overview

For the year 2021, Land Rover expands the availability of the Defender 90 compact SUV by introducing more trims to its US lineup. Then, a new X-Dynamic model comes in to bridge the gap between the base Defender and Defender X trims. With prices starting from $46,100 for the base trim, the 2021 Land Rover Defender is available in 2 body styles - the three-door "90" variant, and the five-door "110" variant which is reviewed separately.

The new 2021 Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic has glossy Navik Black doors and wheel arches cladded in Silicon Satin skid plates to set itself apart. Land Rover offers several options such as graphics packages, contrasting while/black roofs, roof racks, roof-mounted ladders, and much more across all models of the Defender. At the same time, the 2021 Defender's interior is loaded with ample tech and features to make every journey delightful.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 will be offered in 5 different trims: Base, S, X-Dynamic S, First Edition, and X. The prices start from $46,100 and range up to $80,500 for the top-of-the-line trim. Leasing a 2021 Land Rover Defender will cost you around $1,019/month for 36 months after a 10% down payment rounded off.

The 2021 Defender 90 and Defender 90 S models gets a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 (P300) engine while all the other variants get a more powerful 3.0L Twincharged (turbocharged + supercharged) mild-hybrid inline-6 (P400) engine.

Buying Advice

While even the base model is loaded enough, according to us the the ‘X-Dynamic’ trim is the best Land Rover Defender you can buy. At a price of $57,800 MSRP, the 2021 Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic is the cheapest model you can get with the 3.0L Twincharged inline-6 engine and features such as 19-inch wheels, premium LED headlights, and Meridian Sound System.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

"In all, the Defender is as capable as the best Wrangler off road with a more comfortable, refined, and controlled demeanor on the road." - TheCarConnection.com

The  Defender gets a total of 2 engine options - a 2.0L Turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.0L Twincharged inline-6. The Base variant gets the 2.0L Turbocharged inline-4 which produces 296 hp and 296 lb-ft torque that is more than enough for regular day-to-day use. In case you are into more power and serious off-roading then you can go with the new 3.0-liter inline-six that is available in the 2021 Defender's X-Dynamic, First Edition, and X variants.

The 3.0L engine of the Defender will be twin-charged (supercharged+turbocharged) and also it has got a 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance system that's good for a combined 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. As standard, the Defender will be offered with 8-Speed automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive, and Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system.

The eight-speed automatic gearbox and All-Wheel Drive systems certainly make the Defender a capable and comfortable vehicle that is a strong hitter in the performance division. The 2.0L engine under the hood of the Defender is one of the most powerful units in the segment. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler's 3.6L V6 engine ranks second with its 285 ponies and 260 lb-ft of twisties.

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro's 4.0L V6 engine is the biggest displacement engine in the class yet belts out the meekest power figures. The 2021 Land Rover Defender with its base 2.0 engine does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the Land Rover Defender P400 goes from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The mild-hybrid system assists by compensating for the turbo lag, making sure you have plenty of torque even at low revs.

Whereas, the 2021 Defender 3.0L P400 gets a fuel tank capacity of 23.4 gallons. The Jeep Wrangler's fuel efficiency outshines the entire segment. The Jeep Wrangler is capable of doing 22 MPG in city traffic conditions, which is impressive considering it is a full-sized off-roader. However, the Defender gets the biggest fuel tank of the lot and in turn, offers a better range between fuel stops.

Interior
7.0/10

"The Defender is (unlike the Jeep) super-roomy too, with a wide cabin and loads of rear legroom." - TopGear.com

The 2021 Land Rover Defender's interior is a perfect blend of quality and utility. The Defender gets an all-new designed dashboard, however the moment you step inside, you still find the styling cues of an authentic Land Rover. The brand has managed to give it a modern look with a hint of an old-school design. The visibility from inside is impeccable, which comes in really handy when treading off the road.

You also get a long list of toys to play with and the amazing Land Rover terrain response makes the Defender relentless while on the move. There is nothing too luxurious, but the Defender's interior is comparable with many other current-generation SUVs. The overall build quality is good, and some small noticeable hints give you the same vibe as the old Defender.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender offers highly configurable space, giving you a choice of two front seats in a walk-through cabin, a front jump seat, and a seven-seater layout. The center-stack mounted gear lever helps open up space alongside the driver and passenger and also enables certain models to have a folding jump seat.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender offers a cargo capacity of 15.6 cubic feet. The storage is not only limited to the inside. A Land Rover Defender with a roof rack can carry more than 660 lbs of luggage and there are additional hooks for hanging fuel cans. The Defender gets the brand's all-new touchscreen infotainment system which is dubbed with Pivi Pro and makes use of a single 10-inch screen.

The UI and response time is much better and is equipped with the latest smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unlike the dual-screen systems in their new offerings such as the Velar and Evoque, the Defender makes do with a single screen. Land Rover grants the Defender a satellite-linked navigation system that is active even without the need for any internet or cell phone reception.

Moreover, Meridian grants three options for the audio system for the 2021 Land Rover Defender. A basic 6-speaker sound system, a 10-speaker 400W audio system with subwoofer and active noise cancellation which is available in the First Edition trim, and a 14-speaker premium audio system with a 700W amplifier and Trifield Surround Sound technology which you get when you upgrade to the X trim.

Some of the most prominent infotainment features of the 2021 Land Rover Defender are:

  • AM/FM/HD Radio
  • 2 USB Ports
  • Universal Remote Transmitter
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • External Temperature Display
  • Air Quality Sensor

"Land Rover didn’t go overly retro with the Defender, instead building a modern SUV with nods to the Defender’s past." - TheCarConnection.com

Land Rover has managed to give a hint of the 50s model to the new Land Rover Defender, it would easily strum your heartstring and not lose its practicality and capabilities too. Following and matching all the regulations and being safe at the same time too. The new Defender looks modern and at the same time maintains the boxy characteristics of a big SUV.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is one tough cookie. The body is protected by skid plates and reinforced steel bumpers. This takes off the worry that you'll break something the next time you go trailing into the Rockies. A 1.7-gallon water reservoir with a spryer hose enables you to wash out the dirt and mud off the car. Going camping? A Land Rover Defender with roof tent makes for a perfect space.

The roof can also be equipped with a roof rack, insulated tent, bike stand, or a ski-snowboard carrier, depending on what you fancy on your voyage. The new 2021 Land Rover Defender gets exterior features such as LED headlights, panoramic roof, 20-inch wheels with all-season tires, and much more. The list of features increases as we go up the line-up.

2021 Land Rover Defender vs 2021 Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler is much cheaper than the Defender. However, it is not as practical as the Defender. The stiff suspension setup of the Wrangler gives it great off-road capabilities, however, it feels a bit harsh on the normal roads. The Defender can handle the off-road tracks and the normal city driving conditions with the same poise.

The Defender also triumphs the Wrangler in terms of interior space and features offered. The Defender is also more powerful than the Wrangler. However, the Wrangler offers more horsepower per dollar as well as better fuel efficiency.

2021 Land Rover Defender vs 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The Defender is a more modern and luxurious option to go with and also has a bigger heritage push. Both of the cars are better in their own ways, the prices of these cars are somewhat similar. The 4Runner TRD Pro gets a better value as being a Toyota, the reliability and maintenance become very easy. On the other hand, the Land Rover will come in handy in case you like to take the roads less taken!

The 4Runner TRD Pro is comparatively more expensive than the Defender and offers less power. Moreover, the 4Runner TRD Pro is also less fuel-efficient than the Defender. When seen as a complete package, the Defender proves of better value in almost every aspect.

Final Verdict

The Ultimate off-roader, the Defender is back with a bang. The new Defender is modern and completely up to date with the latest techs. The unformidable Land Rover Terrain Response system gives the Defender an ultimate go-anywhere attitude. However, all of the fun comes at a certain price. The 2021 Land Rover Defender will have a starting price tag of just a shy under $50,000. However, the latest iteration certainly feels worth the price.
