2021 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Segment-leading fuel-efficiency from four-cylinder engine
  • Multiple engine option choice - 4-cylinder, V6 or Hybrid
  • Comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features come standard
  • Plenty of cabin and cargo space as compared to rivals
  • Now available with AWD drivetrain

Cons

  • Wind and road noise creep inside at highway speed
  • 2.5L motor offers lethargic acceleration

The 2021 Toyota Camry is available for sale for a base price of $25,045 and comes with five trims on offer. For 2021, the mid-size sedan retains the two engine options; 203 hp 2.5L inline-4 and the 301 hp 3.5L V6 for the XLE, XSE, and TRD. Apart from that, the Camry also comes in a Hybrid version which costs $27,270 and can offer gas mileage up to 53 MPG.

Overview

The 2021 Toyota Camry gets quite a few updates for 2021. For starters, Toyota's Safety Sense 2.5+ safety suite is now standard fitment across the board. Furthermore, the Camry receives styling enhancements on the front and gets new exterior colors, and new wheel designs as well. Available for sale for a starting MSRP of $25,045, there are 5 trims on offer that are powered by a 203 hp 2.5L I-4 engine as standard. The choice between FWD and AWD is also available right from the base LE trim.

Even the interior of the 2021 Toyota Camry gets Herringbone Pattern seats in the XLE trim. Thanks to the option between the 7-inch and 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the tech is more refined as well. For power lovers, the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD with the 301 hp 3.5L V6 is also available for $32,360. And the fuel frugal folks can settle for the Camry Hybrid that starts from $27,270 and offers up to 53 MPG at its best.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

How much does a 2021 Toyota Camry cost?

The 2021 Toyota Camry is available in a total of six trims - LE, SE, SE Nightshade, XLE, XSE, and TRD - splitting into 13 different configurations. Like the 2020 Camry, the 2021 model's diverse engine options appeal to the masses. You can get a 2021 Camry XLE with the 203 hp 2.5L inline-4 starting at $29,945 while the 2021 Toyota Camry XSE, with the available 301 hp V6 engine, has an MSRP of $35,620. Though, the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD (reviewed separately) is still the cheapest of all Camry models to equip the V6 engine.

Which Toyota Camry model is right for me?

The 2021 Camry has a new entry point with the LE trim, starting at an MSRP of $25,045. Next-in-line SE trim starts at $26,560 while the SE Nightshade costs $27,260. The 2021 Toyota Camry XLE is priced at $29,945 while the XSE starts at $30,495. For the AWD drivetrain, Toyota charges $1,400 extra on all Camry trims. All Camry Hybrid models get a lower starting MSRP by almost $1,200 starting from the model year 2020. The gas-only Toyota Camry offers two engine options - a base 203 hp 2.5L inline-4 as standard and a more powerful 301 hp 3.5L V6 engine as optional for the XLE and XSE trims only.

Buying Advice

The 2021 Toyota Camry gets minor updates this year and adds safety and tech features. However, from the trim levels available, the XLE should be the one to pick for $29,945. With the Camry XLE, you get a taste of all of the best features of the moniker like the bigger 9-inch touchscreen system, leather upholstery, and power-adjustable and heated seats to name a few. However, it does not go exorbitantly high to cross the 30 grand mark and hence forms the perfect bargain as a family car.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"Toyota has optimized it to get high fuel economy, but the trade-off is rather sluggish acceleration off the line." - Edmunds.com

The Toyota Camry offers a total of 3 engine options to choose from - a 203 hp 2.5-liter I-4 (206 hp in XSE), a 301 hp naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6, and a 208 hp hybrid (reviewed separately). All gasoline models, except Camry TRD, get the 2.5L naturally aspirated Inline-4 engine generating a torque output of 184 lb-ft (186 in XSE) as standard. The higher trims like XLE and XSE, both of which come for $35,070 and $35,620 respectively, get the smooth and punchy 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor producing 267 lb-ft of torque as well.

Is 2021 Toyota Camry AWD?

An 8-speed Direct Shift ECT-i Automatic is standard across all the trims. For your 2021 Camry, however, you will be able to choose either a standard front-wheel-drive (FWD) or an optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) costing around $1,400 more than the FWD. The Camry Hybrid even offers multiple driving modes - Eco, Normal, Sport, and EV - too. For 2021, Toyota adds the range-topping XSE trim to the Camry Hybrid's lineup as well.

Which 2021 Toyota Camry is the fastest?

The gas-only Camry manages to reach 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds and takes 15.7 seconds for completing a quarter-mile. The V6 equipped Camry TRD takes 5.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill and has a top speed of up to 136 mph. In comparison to the rivals, the Accord turned out to be the fastest with a 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds.

Compared to the others, the Camry does not do justice to its specs since the Honda Accord offers better 0-60 mph performance. The Hyundai Sonata is even slower than the Camry at 7.9 seconds. The Nissan Altima is the most underpowered and yet is just 0.1 seconds slower in the 0-60 mph sprint.

Can the 2021 Toyota Camry drive in snow?

With a compliant suspension on offer coupled with decent driving dynamics, the Camry turned out to be confident behind the wheel as well as comfortable. The suspension takes in all the irregularities with ease and at the same time offers low understeer and body roll too. As a result, the cabin feels calm at most times, which is not very well insulated to keep out most noises. The optional AWD setup of this midsize sedan, however, ensures plenty of control in all driving conditions, including snow.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Toyota Camry will get almost the same fuel efficiency for 2021 as the outgoing version since the powertrain remains identical. The gas-only models of this midsize sedan will offer maximum mileage of 28 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, with a combined efficiency of 32 mpg. If you opt for the AWD Camry, the combined fuel economy drops by about three mpg in the city and on highways.

The trims like TRD, XLE, and XSE, all of which come with the 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor, put out a lower combined gas mileage of 25 mpg, with 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. However, if you opt for the hybrid variant on offer, it returns an excellent combined mileage of 46 mpg. With a fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons, it manages to provide a combined cruising range of 607 miles.

The high MPG figures of the Toyota Camry make it a popular choice among buyers. The Honda Accord, however, comes to the top position with a combined 33 mpg, which is followed by Nissan Altima with 32 mpg combined. However, the Altima leads with its 16.2-gallon tank to offer up to 632 miles of driving range in a single fill-up.

Interior
8.0/10

"The Camry's cabin won't wow you with its opulence but instead nails the fundamentals across the board." - Edmunds.com

Inspired by its predecessor, the 2021 Camry would be perked up with a slightly updated version of its Y-shaped dashboard and comfortable seats. The cabin also comes wrapped in three different color shades, namely ash leather, black leather, and cockpit red leather.

Which 2021 Toyota Camry has leather seats and sunroof?

When it comes to the features, the top-of-the-line XSE trim gets leather upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment system, heated seats, and metallic interior trim. If you shell out $1,360 more, you could get the panoramic glass roof with front power tilt/slide as well. The Camry offers the least space in its first row as compared to its competition while the Sonata gets the most spacious front row in the segment with more than 46 inches of legroom. The 2021 Accord provides the most spacious rear seat among all the rivals here. However, Accord's 16.7 cubic feet of trunk space is best in class, followed by the 2021 Sonata's 16.0 cubic feet.

Toyota offers an upgraded Entune 3 infotainment system with 7-inch or 9-inch touchscreen displays in the 2021 Camry, just like the new 2021 RAV4. The display is a floating unit now, which has helped in freeing up space on the dashboard and bring in a refreshing change to the layout.

Standard features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You can opt for an optional Audio Plus package that adds an 800W 9-speaker JBL sound system in the higher trim levels.

Some of the other interior and infotainment features offered with the 2021 Toyota Camry include:

  • Rearview Camera with Dynamic Guidelines

Exterior
7.0/10

"Those who simply prefer a stylish and comfy family sedan, with driver assists and popular features galore, will also adore the 2021 Camry." - CarAndDriver.com

The 2021 Camry gets a mild exterior refresh this year that comes with an LED headlights and LED DRLs along with a blacked-out grille and elegant looking 19-inch alloy wheels for the higher trims like XSE. Toyota offers a new look up front which distinguishes the LE and XLE grades from the SE and XSE as well. To add more appeal, the revised design is augmented by a new Blueprint replacing Blue Streak Metallic in the color palette. The XSE trim now offers the two-tone Supersonic Red with Midnight Black Metallic roof combination.

The $30,420 Camry XSE also gets many more exterior features like dual exhaust, two-tone body color, gloss-black exterior trim pieces, and many more too. The latter team gets a broad front grille ornamented with a single uncut piece that takes a broader space. The vehicle’s 17 and 18-inch wheels sprinkle an additional touch to the design. The $32,185 TRD has wonderful black exterior bits with a blacked-out mesh grille and red accents too, which makes the car look sporty.

At 5.7 inches, the Camry offers the highest ground clearance amongst its rivals while the 2021 Sonata has the longest wheelbase at 111.8 inches. However, in the mid-size family sedan class, the dimensions of the Accord, and that of the Altima are almost similar to Camry's, especially when it comes to length, width, and height.

Some of the most notable exterior features of the 2021 Toyota Camry are:

  • Moonroof
  • LED headlights
  • Automatic Headlamps
  • Rain Sensing Wipers

2021 Toyota Camry vs 2021 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is probably the Toyota Camry’s biggest rival in the segment. In terms of the engine, Toyota somehow manages to beat Honda’s turbocharged engine in terms of performance numbers. However, the Accord surpasses the Camry in terms of acceleration and when it comes to fuel economy too. Nevertheless, the base LX trim of the 2021 Honda Accord comes at a lower MSRP of $24,770, undercutting the Camry by close to $200.

2021 Toyota Camry vs 2021 Hyundai Sonata

The 2021 Toyota Camry is a much-improved car and flaunts more features than it has ever had. The cabin inside is spacious and the ride inside is buttoned down. Want something sportier, there is a strong V6 up for grabs too. However, Hyundai gave the buyers an all-new Sonata model just last year, so the 2021 model only gets mild updates. Undoubtedly, the 2021 Sonata has a radical design and upgraded features. But between the two, Camry makes for a better choice overall.

2021 Toyota Camry vs 2021 Nissan Altima

The 2021 Toyota Camry, similar to its previous model, is not a lot better than the 2021 Nissan Altima. When it comes to interior space, Nissan Altima turned out to be slightly better. But when it comes to reliability, the Camry will be more reliable in the long run due to its bulletproof reliability in comparison to the Altima, whose reliability has constantly been going uphill for the last few years as well.
