The 2022 Chevrolet Trax will be a carryover model with a slight upgrade to its engine power output. The SUV will be available in two trim levels which are LS and LT. The price for the LS starts at $22,595 for the standard FWD layout while the AWD costs slightly more at $23,215. The price tags are quite pocket-friendly and the SUV gets a handsome list of features that include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, cloth upholstery, Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker sound system, 60/40 split-folding rear seats along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The LT trim starts at a price of $24,395 for the FWD layout and further adds LED running lights, leatherette upholstery, heated exterior mirrors, and remote start among other features. Some of the optional features include a Blind-spot monitoring system, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and faux leather upholstery with heated front seats.

We would recommend the base LS trim along with the optional features and the AWD layout for the best experience with the SUV. The LT trim is best suited for those who desire those extra features for added convenience.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax engine is a 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged I-4 unit that received an increase in power output over the previous year’s model. It now delivers a decent 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. The motor doesn’t get quite sporty or lively under any circumstances and sometimes you might feel the turbocharger is there for the sake of its presence. Daily drives around the city and suburban limits are where the motor performs at its best and can carry around the vehicle confidently even under a full load. The motor is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that performs quite well and keeps the engine at its optimum level most of the time. The 0-60 or the quarter-mile timings of the SUV aren’t available yet and we’d happily give it a pass considering the power and torque levels of the motor.

The Ford EcoSport gets the biggest motor here, a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, and puts out the highest power figure too at 166 horsepower. Despite that, it takes a painstakingly long 10.2 seconds to complete the 0-60mph sprint and 18 seconds to complete the standing quarter-mile stretch. Moreover, the driving dynamics and the nature of the motor are duller than what you’d get from the Trax. The Honda HR-V gets a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated motor but has the lowest power and torque figures among the rivals here. Surprisingly though, it takes 9.9 seconds to complete the 0-60mph sprint. The Buick Encore is the mechanical twin of the Trax hence its motor and the power figures are identical to the latter as well.

Subcompact SUVs do serve the purpose of being a great city vehicle and are also aimed at returning some better fuel economy figures as compared to full-size SUVs and mid-size crossovers out there. The 2022 Chevrolet Trax rides on the same formula but its mpg figures are nothing quite interesting. It manages to return 24mpg within the city limits, 32mpg out on the highways, and 27mpg of combined mileage. With a 14-gallon gas tank, the SUV can go 336 miles within the city and 448 miles out on the highways before stopping at a gas station.

The Ford EcoSport offers a better city mpg figure than the Trax while offering the lowest highway mileage among the rivals here. Moreover, it gets a smaller 13.8-gallon gas tank resulting in a lower highway driving range but a surprisingly high city driving range. The Honda HR-V is the most fuel-efficient of the lot here yet fails to impress owing to its smallest 13.2-gallon gas tank and unimpressive driving range numbers. The Buick Encore has almost similar mpg figures to the Trax along with a same-sized gas tank as well.

Affordable and subcompact SUVs are the perfect recipe for a great urban vehicle and not much should be expected from the interior and creature comfort features of those vehicles. The 2022 Chevrolet Trax interior gets all the basics right yet the extensive use of budget materials bogs down the overall experience. The cabin also lacks refinement and you might find some irritating panel gaps as well. The robust build somewhat makes up for it and the cabin gets a decent list of features for the price tag as well. The front seats are quite comfortable and spacious, offering excellent headroom and legroom for both the driver and the passenger while the rear seats do offer a decent level of comfort too with adequate headroom and legroom along with a 60/40 split-folding capability as well. 

The cabin feels quite airy and the all-around visibility is great too courtesy of the big windows. The window glasses are acoustically laminated for better insulation but at highway speeds, the desire for better insulation might arouse owing to the amount of road noise infiltrating inside the cabin. The cargo capacity behind the rear seats is decent at the most, measuring 18.7 cu-ft.

The cabin of the Ford EcoSport is best described as functional at the most. The interior gets a heavy dose of exposed plastic materials that are cheap to keep the cost in check while the list of features might please the buyer. The rear seats do offer a decent amount of space but the headroom and legroom are shorter than what the rivals offer here. The Honda HR-V offers a minimalistic yet the best cabin among the rivals here. The design is strictly functional, while the quality of materials and the fit and finish levels are commendable. The seats are more comfortable than what the rivals offer and it has the biggest cargo capacity too among the rivals on the list. The Buick Encore is almost as spacious as the Honda HR-V but gets a similar capacity cargo hold to the Trax. The notable thing inside the Encore is its level of comfort that is further enhanced by the supple ride quality.

The Chevrolet Trax received a major exterior facelift back in 2017 and evolved from a timid-looking SUV to a matured and slightly aggressive-looking one. The 2022 Trax will continue with the same design and it is quite at par with the rest of the rivals in the segment. The front end gets a two-part front grille design and the sleek headlamp units do give the SUV a lot of character. The side profile is clutter-free yet smart-looking owing to the curves and the creases around the wheel arches. The rear end gets a slightly polarizing design language that doesn’t gel in with the front fascia design. The ground clearance is decent at the most at 6.2 inches and even with the AWD layout, it remains strictly a city vehicle.

The Ford EcoSport gets a bolder design language as compared to the Trax and stands as the most compact offering here on the list with the shortest length and wheelbase. Moreover, its overall design makes it look more premium than it actually is and the disappointment of the interior is not visible on the exterior design thankfully. It impresses with its 7.8-inch ground clearance and can take rough patches of roads with ease. The Honda HR-V looks anything but rugged, unlike both the Trax and the EcoSport. It is more of a big city car ideally suited for those looking to upgrade from a mainstream sedan. The bold front grille design does give the SUV a distinctive appeal yet its overall appearance feels weaker in front of the rivals here. The Buick Encore might be based on the Trax yet it has a more easy-going design language and reflects its comfortable cabin and ride quality on the outside too.

Chevrolet doesn’t joke around when it comes to the safety of its vehicles even though it is a mass automobile producer. The Trax got a top 5-star rating from the NHTSA for 2021 MY, while the IIHS also gave it the highest rating of “Good” as well. The scores of the 2022 model are yet to be released. Apart from that, the vehicle gets all the basic safety techs on board, but the advanced techs are scarce, unfortunately.

The Ford EcoSport is a decent offering in the segment with an affordable price tag. Yet, it falls short in front of the Trax in almost every aspect barring the cargo capacity. The most disappointing part is the performance followed by the cramped rear seats. The fuel economy department is where the EcoSport manages to triumph over the Trax but only in the city mileage.

Like every other Honda vehicle, the HR-V stands as the most sensible and fuel-efficient competitor in the segment, with a lot going for it. The cabin of the vehicle is the best part of it with a simple yet practical design and offering the best-in-class rear-seat space. The cargo capacity is also among the highest in the segment, while the performance aspect is where it lacks the most.

Chevrolet Trax vs Buick Encore 

The Buick Encore is essentially the mechanical twin of the Trax hence most of its mechanicals, interior dimensions, and powerplant are identical to the Trax. The Encore manages to best the Trax in terms of interior comfort along with segment-leading ride quality and handling as well.

Among the cut-throat competition in the highly competitive segment, the Trax manages to hold its ground firmly with a decent performance, a great price tag, a practical interior, and decent driving dynamics. On the practical side, the vehicle might disappoint a bit with its fuel economy numbers, yet it makes for a great city vehicle if considered as a package.
