The 2022 Ford Mustang is the last model year of the current S550 generation of the ride. Hence, it will adorn the best outfit for the current generation. Offered in a choice of 5 trims, it starts at an MSRP of $27,205 and the 2022 model could hit the dealerships in late 2021. Powered by a 2.3L Ecoboost engine that produces 310 hp, the Mustang will set the stage perfectly for the next generation that will arrive in 2023.
The Mustang is one of the most popular cars in the world and it gets new appearance packages for 2022 alongside the already available high-performance options, and two body styles -coupe or convertible. Pricing for the 2022 Ford Mustang starts at $27,205 for the fastback while the convertible begins from $32,705. New-for-2022 Mustang EcoBoost Coastal Edition adds a body-colored grille, fixed rear spoiler, side scoops, and a vinyl stripe for just $1,995. The new Ice White package, also available with Mach-E, adds a few exterior and interior cosmetic changes as well.
Power comes from a punchy turbocharged four-cylinder or a mighty 5.0-liter V-8. Both motors drive the rear wheels through an engaging manual transmission or an excellent 10-speed automatic. Though the base Mustang with Ecoboost engine is fun to drive, Ford offers track-focused Mach 1 and even more aggressive 760-hp Shelby GT500. In comparison to the Chevy Camaro, the Mustang can be driven every day and has a roomier back seat and better outward visibility. The 2022 Mustang will mark the last outing of the current S550 generation and the seventh-generation Mustang S650 model series will take the baton forward from 2023. This top-rated pony car goes up against the Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro.
"The Mustang requires a steady hand on the configurator." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Ford Mustang comes in six main trims: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, Mach 1, and Shelby GT500. Starting with the EcoBoost Fastback, aka coupe, the 2022 Mustang has a starting MSRP of $27,205, excluding destination. The base Mustang convertible will costs $32,705. Next-in-line, the 2022 Mustang EcoBoost Premium begins at $32,225 and adding the new Coastal Limited Edition package to it will cost $1,995 extra. The Premium trim ups the price by almost 5 grand with a rather upscale outlook to the ride, thanks to leather upholstery on the seats and steering wheel as standard, with heating function.
The Mustang GT that has a V8 engine instead of the standard turbo-four, will go on sale for $36450, and the coupe-only Mustang Mach 1 is priced at $53,000. Topping the lineup is the most powerful Mustang, the Shelby GT500 with a starting price of $72,900.
In terms of customization, Ford offers a wide range of options for the EcoBoost and GT models. We recommend the High-Performance Package with the Ecoboost models as it adds torque-sensing (Torsen) limited-slip differential, sportier suspensions, adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, Pirelli summer tires, adaptive cruise control, sport exhaust, and a Black Accent package. With the Premium versions you can upgrade to a heated steering wheel, 20-inch alloys, Recaro sport front seats, Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker audio system, plus the new Coastal, Stealth and Ice White exterior packages.

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT Fastback trim is the one we recommend. The powerful 5.0L V8 is punchy, refined, and gives the real Mustang thrill with its 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds. We also recommend the 6-speed manual transmission for a complete experience. At $36,285, the GT is on the affordable side of the Mustang performance. The GT performance package will enrich the driving experience, but will also cost around $6,500.
"Don't be fooled by its cylinder count - the standard turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder has enough punch to embarrass V-8 Mustangs of old." - Car and Driver
The 2022 Ford Mustang carries over the turbocharged four-cylinder and V8 engine options across the trim lineup. The base version of the 2022 Mustang has a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which makes a respectable 310 horsepower or 332 horsepower with the High-Performance Package. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 10-speed automatic available for upgrade. All new Mustangs are only Rear-wheel drive.
For this American icon, the thump of the V8 is a must. The 2022 Mustang GT and Mach 1 (reviewed separately) have a 5.0-liter V8 unit developing 450 horsepower and 470 hp each. Both the GT and Mach 1 engines have reduced output this year, each one losing 10 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque. The Shelby GT500 (reviewed separately) adds a supercharger to its 5.2-liter V8 for a 760 horsepower output.
The gearbox is smooth, with quick shifts that are precise and lag-free. Thanks to the brute strength of the turbocharged engine, the Mustang Ecoboost can go from 0-60 mph in as little as 5.0 seconds when equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission. The quarter-mile comes up in 13.7 seconds and it has a top speed of 121 mph. The Mustangs with the EcoBoost High-Performance package does a zero-to-60 straight-line sprint in the mid-four seconds. The GT and the Mach 1 with the 5.0L V8 return a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, whereas the Shelby GT 500 accelerates from 0-60 mph in a quick 3.3 seconds.
The Mustang comes with four driving modes: Normal, Sport+, Track, and Wet/Snow. The Mustang's Ecoboost engine packs enough punch and is an engaging car to drive. Despite the driving mode, the Mustang is an excellent handler. The steering is well-weighted, with tremendous feedback from the chassis and the tires. The handling is sharp, with well-controlled body roll in the turns thanks to the independent suspension setup. We recommend the High Performance Package, adding an uprated suspension for better handling and ride quality.

When compared to its long-term adversaries, the Mustang takes the top spot by all means. The Dodge Challenger slips into the second spot with its 303 hp 3.6L V6. The 275 hp Chevy Camaro is actually in the last spot, however, it proves its mettle by securing the second spot in the 0-60 mph run with its 5.4 seconds timing. The Challenger is the slowest of the lot, with its 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. In terms of pricing, however, the Camaro is the most affordable car in the lot.
"The Mustang doesn't try to hide its appetite for octane." - The Car Connection
The Ecoboost engine from Ford is actually known to be fairly fuel-efficient and the 2022 Ford Mustang will offer 21 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG overall with the 10-speed automatic gearbox. These figures drop as low as 19 MPG city/ 25 MPG highway/ 21 MPG combined with the manual gearbox. The Mustang gets a 15.5-gallon fuel tank which gives it a combined range of 372 miles.
The 5.0L V8 engine returns as low as 15 MPG/24 MPG/ 19 MPG city/highway/combined with the automatic. Mach 1 with the manual sees a fuel economy of 14 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined. The Shelby GT500 returns as low as 12 MPG in the city, 18 MPG on the highway, and 14 MPG combined. Fuel costs for the standard Mustang come around 0.15 dollars/mile over 5 years with a yearly running of 15,000 miles.

The Mustang is the most efficient car among the lot, followed by the Challenger at 23 MPG combined, and the Camaro is the least efficient at 21 MPG combined. The Mustang's tank capacity limits its range by a significant gap against the rivals, whereas the Challenger and Camaro both benefit with their larger 18.5-gallons and 19-gallon tanks. The Challenger serves to be the most economical car, overall.
"The Mustang interior is better than ever. " - Car and Driver
The 2022 Mustang has a pleasant interior with the high build quality. Without any major changes this year, Mustang's interior boasts a mixed level of quality as it has bits of hard plastics but the overall arrangement is good enough. Though this muscle car does not offer a lot of standard features inside, the SYNC 3 infotainment system includes many popular features. The controls are logically placed and are easy to reach while driving. Also, Ford offers varied premium features such as heated and cooled front seats, the Mustang still lacks the upscale feel of some of the rivals.
The Mustang is a 4 seater, and like every other coupe, it does not have any meaningful rear passenger space. For that, Dodge Challenger is the only car with a useful rear passenger room. Inside Mustang, the front seats are excellent for long hours unless you are thinking of the special Recaro sport seats. The rear legroom and headroom both are limited, and the seating is mostly cramped. Ingress and egress to the front row are not a problem with the wide-opening doors, but the doors themselves are long and heavy. Visibility through the Mustang is decent all around, thanks to the thin pillars and large rear windows.

Depending on the trim, you get cloth or leather upholstery for the seats, and the ventilated and heated option seats work on point. The seats and the steering both are adjustable. Against the rivals, the Mustang's front row is the most spacious, whereas the Challenger's front row offers the most headroom. In the back, the Challenger has the best legroom and headroom, which makes this a great family car as well. The Mustang's cargo capacity of 13.5 cu-ft is decent, but the Challenger's ahead at 16.2 cu-ft.
You get the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Ford Sync 3 as standard in the center of the dashboard and auxiliary controls for it in the multifunction steering wheel. The touchscreen is bright, and the user interface is sleek and easy to use. Response to touch inputs is precise, and the smartphone integration is seamless. There is an optional digital panel, and this panel is quite useful in most situations. Some interior features on the Mustang are:
"The Mustang gives a master class on being an icon." The Car Connection
The 2022 Ford Mustang is an excellent-looking car. The hood is long and suave as is expected from it, and it looks like a total drool-worthy eye candy for any passerby. The triple-strip DRLs supported snake-eyed headlamps look downright handsome and aggressive while the black grille adds another dimension to it. As you move to the side the 17-inch wheels mark their entry in full glory, all the while carving the same familiar and handsome silhouette.
The triple strip tail-lamps pay a homage to the '67 Mustang, and still have a modern flair to them. No matter from where you look at it, the Mustang has an enchanting road presence that cannot be overlooked. For 2022, the Mustang gets an Ice white Edition that adds the Oxford white exterior color, with ice-white elements around the taillights and around the 19-inch wheels. The Mustang is 188.5 inches long, with a wheelbase of 107.1 inches.

Both the Mustang and the Camaro are excellent at being the right affordable sports cars with on-demand power. The Camaro has more interior technological features, is affordable than the Mustang, and has a powerful array of engines. The Mustang is more powerful, more fuel economical, better in terms of safety, and has more trunk space in this category. All in all, the Mustang is the car to choose from thanks to its better base engine, good visibility, and an excellent array of safety features.
The Challenger is a direct rival to the Mustang. Both are priced very close, and offer ample power and handling at a low MSRP. The Mustang has a powerful array of engines, comes with excellent safety systems, and is also available as a convertible car. The Challenger on the other hand comes with an optional AWD system, has a very powerful V8 engine and the rear is spacious than the Mustang. The combination of more interior space and AWD is a plus one for the Challenger over the Mustang.
The Ford Mustang is going to mark the last outing of the S550 generation in 2022. It has been the perfect manifestation of the statement “Going in Style”. It certainly is a head-turner despite being a common sight and gives you that macho feel right from the first time you take a seat in it. With the minor bump in price and stylish outlook to everything, you will definitely find a long-lasting ride of a lifetime as it sets the stage for the next-gen S650 Mustang.
