About 2022 Nissan Altima

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Nissan Altima will be a carryover model and will be available for sale at an MSRP of $25,525 for the base S trim and go all the way up to $35,225 for the Platinum trim. The 2.5L 188 hp inline-4 engine is carried forward this year too which returns a maximum of 39 MPG on the highways. There are no improvements made to the interior build quality either and Nissan continues to offer the same 5 exterior color options only.

The 2022 Nissan Altima is a carryover model from 2021 since it underwent a facelift just last year. It is available for sale at a retail price of $24,550 excluding the $975 shipping charges. It is powered by a strong 188 hp engine which returns a maximum of 39 MPG. That said, the interior fit and finish isn't as good as expected nor is it as cool as the rumored interior of the upcoming 400Z. Also, it is also only available with the 5 color options as before.

Nissan offers AWD for all the trims except the base S trim, while the top Altima Platinum trim gets AWD as standard. Nissan released the 2022 Altima in September 2021 and will begin deliveries soon by the end of the year. In the competitive midsize sedan segment, the Altima faces competition from the likes of other popular sedans like the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Toyota Camry.

The SL trim with AWD drivetrain is the one that offers maximum value for money because it offers almost the safety features and technology that Nissan has to offer along with the practicality of the AWD. Also, it doesn't appreciate too much in price like the Platinum trim, which also happens to ride on 19-inch wheels that compromise ride comfort.

NISSAN ALTIMA BEST BUY FOR YOUR BUCK

Pros

Easy to drive, Al the extra features

Cons

Gas tank could be bigger, More trunk space

I bought a Nissan Altima. The gas mileage is great in the city and on thr freeway. The interior is tough its taken a beating from the kids and still looks new with hardly any cleaning needing to be done. It's quiet but fast yet it Looks professional and sleek.

2022 Nissan Altima Review

Pros

  • Agile handling & easy-to-drive nature
  • Fuel-efficient powertrains
  • Front seats offer exceptional comfort levels
  • Available AWD option
  • Long list of driver assist features

Cons

  • Base motor can get vocal and feels slow
  • Thick roof pillars and poor resolution rear-view camera affects rearward visibility
  • Interior fit and finish isn't up to the mark

The 2022 Nissan Altima will be a carryover model and will be available for sale at an MSRP of $25,525 for the base S trim and go all the way up to $35,225 for the Platinum trim. Pricing and Features
7.0/10

"The 2022 Nissan Altima is something of middling midsize sedan. It has quite afew stromg points but can't quite compete with the class leaders." - KBB

Nissan will continue to offer the 2022 Altima in five different trims with prices ranging from $25,525 for the base S trim to $35,225 for the Platinum trim. While the 2.5L inline-4 engine is standard across the lineup, a 2L turbo-4 is available optionally with the sporty SR VC-Turbo trim at an MSRP of $31,875. FWD is standard and there is an option to opt for the Intelligent AWD system for all but the base trim, while Platinum gets AWD as standard.

There are plenty of safety features baked in the Altima right from the base trim while the SV trim adds plenty more technology to the mix. The SR trim is the sporty version of the Altima and gets unique design elements along with a sport-tuned suspension setup and larger wheels. The SL trim adds more functionality to the cabin of the 2022 Altima while the top-of-the-line Platinum trim offers more creature comforts like ambient lighting, memory function, and 360-degree cameras.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"Even though the Altima SR comes with a sportier suspension and manual paddle shifters, Nissan could have done more to make it a true sports sedan." - Carbuzz

This year, the 2022 Nissan Altima continues to be powered by a 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine that produces 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. There is also a 2L turbocharged engine available with the SR trim that generates 236 hp and 267 lb-ft. Both the engines are paired up with an XTronic CVT automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. AWD is available for an additional $1,400 and is available with all trim apart from the base S trim.

Nissan for some reason offers this powerful engine only with the FWD drivetrain and just with a single trim, which is not even the top-end trim. The CVT transmission is smooth at shifting but there is a noticeable delay in the power delivery which limits quick acceleration. In terms of driving dynamics, the new Altima is a pleasure to drive as compared to the fleet-car feel of the previous generation. The light & accurate steering, agile chassis, and a well-tuned suspension setup aid in offering both comfort and sporty feel.

With the delayed power output from the CVT transmission, it takes 8 seconds flat for the 0-60 mph sprint. The quarter-mile is covered in 16 seconds while the top speed is limited to 119 MPH. The turbo-4 on the other hand brings down these timings to 6.5 seconds to achieve 60 mph and shaves off a second from the quarter-mile drag run. The brakes are quite well refined as well which allows the sedan to stop from 60-0 mph in a braking distance of 120 feet.

Nissan might have priced their 2022 Altima at a considerably lower starting price than its competitors but its lackluster transmission makes it the slowest one of the lot. The Toyota Camry is the quickest of the lot with its class-leading power output. Both the Accord and Sonata are just a hair-length behind the Toyota. All midsize sedans get the FWD drivetrain as standard but only Nissan offers an AWD drivetrain across its lineup.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

"The latest Altima generation is more appealing thanks to solid fuel economy and useful driver safety aids, but it fails to truly match the segment all-stars." - Edmunds

The 2.5L engine from Nissan is quite robust and very fuel-efficient, and since the 2022 Nissan Altima will carry the same powertrain from 2021, the MPG figures will also remain intact. It returns a maximum of 39 MPG on the highway and 32 MPG combined. The turbo-4 engine is rated for 25/34/29 MPG in city/highway/combined as per the EPA ratings. The large 16.2-gallon fuel tank offers an impressive range of over 600 miles of highway cruising with the base engine and over 450 miles with the turbocharged engine.

Opting for the AWD drops the MPG figures by 2 MPG in each aspect, but that's just the compromise that you make for added practicality. In comparison, the Honda Accord returns slightly better fuel economy figures combined but the Altima does better on the highways, by just 1 MPG though. The Toyota Camry on the other hand has identical fuel efficiency figures as the Altima. The large gas tank capacity of the 2022 Altima provides the best range in the business which is about 50 miles better than the Accord and Sonata.

Interior
7.5/10

"The Nissan Altima is a comfortable cruiser for five, but it doesn't match the cabin quality and driving engagement of many rivals." - cars.usnews.com

Of the several upgrades that the 2022 Nissan Altima is bound to receive for its interior, one that stands out is its zero-gravity seating. These seats deliver the most comfortable experience one could dream of. Otherwise, the interior is fitted with a standard hard plastic dashboard and easy-to-use switchgear. There are also options for several other interior customizations like the seat material, color, tones of the inserts, accents, and in some cases, wood inserts.

When it comes to the interior space provided for the occupants, the 2022 Altima doesn't make any significant changes. There is ample room for the front passengers with enough legroom and headroom to accommodate even taller passengers. However, when you move to the rear, you can't help but feel slightly cramped. It seems like Nissan has shoved all the space in the front and left the rear cabin to remain short on space. However, the cargo space of 15.4 cu-ft is ample enough for daily usage.

Compared to the Honda Accord which has the most spacious interior, the 2022 Nissan Altima stuffs all of the space in the front part of the cabin. The Toyota Camry strikes the middle ground in terms of interior space. The Hyundai Sonata also follows Nissan's approach of stuffing maximum space in the front part of the cabin. However, the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system of the 2022 Nissan Altima will be getting some much-needed tech upgrades.

The infotainment system already comes with the Nissan Connect suite of connectivity. This includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and WiFi. However, this year may mark the entry of newer connectivity tech. The sound system is pretty decent and does a great job at keeping the occupants immersed in the music. The following are some of the notable features of the infotainment setup of the 2022 Altima:

  • 9-speaker sound system
  • 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • In-built navigation
  • SiriusXM Satellite radio
  • NissanConnect Services

Exterior
8.0/10

"The Altima is handsome, user-friendly and drama-free family sedan that neither thrills nor offends." - Caranddriver

The 2022 Nissan Altima will have no exterior cosmetic changes and will be the same exterior design from the 2021 model year. The sleek angular design of the car does not really say performance but the SR trim gets sporty elements like the dark-chrome V-motion grille. LED headlights are standard from SL trim onwards both the SR and Platinum trims get a glass moonroof as standard.

The 17-inch alloy wheels are standard which get bumped to 19-inch on both these trims. The 2022 Nissan Altima will also get Chrome inserts both on the inside and outside, the prominent Chrome fittings on the exteriors can be seen on its grill, sides, and tailgate. It is offered in same 5 colors as before and gets an optional 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheel set for $910. The 5.1-inches of ground clearance remains the same with both set of wheels.

The Camry offers the highest ground clearance which is half an inch greater than the Altima, while both the Accord and Sonata offer decent ride height too. The Sonata is the lightest one in this comparison which is similar to the Accord, which is longer and wider than the competition. The Camry is the heaviest of the lot which the Altima is marginally lighter than the Camry. That said, all four sedans have an almost identical wheelbase length.

Safety
9.4/10

"The Nissan Altima has a plain-spoken appeal, not to mention the high safety scores and great low price." - Thecarconnection

The 2021 Nissan Altima carried a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA and an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS. Furthermore, it was also the 2021 Top Safety Pick+ which assures you of the build quality of the ride. The 2022 Altima will not see any changes made as the Nissan Safety Shield360 will hold the reins to keep the passengers safe during traveling, therefore carrying forward the top safety ratings as well.

Though there are many features that the 2022 Nissan Altima is already known for, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 is the all-powerful safety suite in the brand's lineup. It covers all the basic and advanced levels of safety and driver assistance features that provide a safe haven for all its occupants. The following are some of the most standout safety features that will be provided from the start:

  • Nissan ProPilot Assist and NissanConnect Services
  • Forward Collision Warning w/Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Front & Rear Collision Mitigation and Driver Monitor Alert
  • Surround-view camera w/front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord costs a bit more than the Altima, but it is marginally quicker and returns better fuel economy figures. It also has a good-looking and well-built cabin that is loaded with features. It is longer and hence offers more rear-seat space and cargo space as compared to the Nissan. Hence, the 2022 Accord feels worth the additional investment over the lower base price of the 2022 Altima.

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is only marginally pricier than the Altima but offers a lot more value to buyers. It offers a quick, efficient and comfortable ride. There is plenty of space at the front seat and in the trunk, but the rear seat space is very cramped. That said, it is loaded with features and technology right from the base trim and also comes with an impressive warranty program. All these aspects make the 2022 Sonata the preferred choice.

2022 Nissan Altima vs 2022 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is the most expensive sedan in the segment. For that much money, you get class-leading power output, impressive performance, high efficiency & reliability, and great levels of comfort. It also offers better back seat comfort and the overall build quality and fit & finish is superior to the Nissan, which makes it the obvious choice over the 2022 Altima.

Final Verdict

Pegged for release in Fall 2021, the 2022 Nissan Altima will reach dealerships for sale with a starting price tag of $24,500. Though the ride might feel a little rough around the edges, the changes in store are trying to turn it into a smooth sailing package. While the competition is stiff the 2022 Nissan Altima is a perfect car for many out there who are on the lookout for an affordable, frugal and safe family car.
