About 2022 Nissan Pathfinder

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has finally debuted in its 5th Generation with plenty of changes and has a fall 2021 release date. The SUV is now on sale and has started arriving in Nissan dealerships across the country with the MSRP starting at $34,855 for the base S trim with 2WD and topping out at $49,240 for the Platinum 4WD trim. The 2022 Pathfinder gets an overhaul for the interior and adds more technology and Safety features as well.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder finally gets a complete redesign after being in production in its fourth generation since 2012. The Pathfinder has already started to roll off the assembly line and it retains the 3.5L 284 hp V6 engine with both FWD and 4WD guise.  It continues to be offered in four trim configurations, namely, S, SV, SL, Platinum, and with Nissan bumping its prices for the Pathfinder, the MSRP starts at $34,855.

The interior sees leaps and bound improvement over the 2021 model. It no longer feels like the insides of a truck and higher trims even feature premium elements with a very modern design. It sheds its aging design for a rugged and modern design and is available for sale right now. The Pathfinder competes in the midsize 7-seat SUV segment against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and Toyota Highlander.

The SL trim with a 4WD drivetrain priced at an MSRP of $42,640 offers immense value and should be the preferred choice.

Although it gets considerably pricier when compared to its competitors, the larger infotainment system, leather upholstery, heated front seats & steering wheel, 360-degree camera system, and adaptive cruise control, make it the most valuable offering in its lineup. The Scarlet Ember Tintcoat looks striking and costs just $395 more, that said, opting for the dual-tone color scheme will cost $745.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder Review

Pros

  • Modern interior and exterior design
  • Quiet and comfortable cabin
  • Plenty of storage and impressive maximum towing capacity

Cons

  • Unimpressive driving dynamics
  • Higher trims are expensive than its rivals

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has finally debuted in its 5th Generation with plenty of changes and has a fall 2021 release date. The SUV is now on sale and has started arriving in Nissan dealerships across the country with the MSRP starting at $34,855 for the base S trim with 2WD and topping out at $49,240 for the Platinum 4WD trim. The 2022 Pathfinder gets an overhaul for the interior and adds more technology and Safety features as well.

Overview

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder finally gets a complete redesign after being in production in its fourth generation since 2012. The Pathfinder has already started to roll off the assembly line and it retains the 3.5L 284 hp V6 engine with both FWD and 4WD guise.  It continues to be offered in four trim configurations, namely, S, SV, SL, Platinum, and with Nissan bumping its prices for the Pathfinder, the MSRP starts at $34,855.

Pricing and Features

"The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder packs a value with good standard features and roomy interior." - The car connection

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder will come in a total of 4 trims, namely, S, SV, SL, and Platinum. Even in the base S trim, the 2022 Pathfinder comes loaded with plenty of features like the Nissan Safety Shield 360, three-zone climate control, an 8-inch infotainment system, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

All 4 trims will be offered with 4WD as an option for $1,900 more. The SV trim adds more driver aids like lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitor and ProPilot assist along with heated front seats and remote engine start functions. Upgrading to the SL trims adds more technology along with a larger infotainment screen, and leather upholstery, while the top-end Platinum trim features larger wheels, tow hitch receiver, ventilated front, and heated rear seats along with plenty more creature comforts.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"Despite the improvements, the Pathfinder fails to impress as it is a chore to getting the SUV to highway speeds." - Motortrend

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is powered by the same 3.5L V6 engine as the previous model.

Unlike the older fourth-generation Pathfinder, Nissan has focused on coupling their V6 to a robust transmission unit for the 2022 Pathfinder. The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder generates 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque from the V6. The engine is capable enough for quick overtakes and serves the SUV well in most driving conditions.

The V6 is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission which powers the front wheels as standard with the option for 4WD also being available. The 2022 Pathfinder can do the 0-60 mph run in 6.7 seconds and the quarter-mile sprint in 15.3 seconds while topping out at a top speed of 119 MPH.

The standard 3,500 lbs towing capacity can be bumped to 6,000 lbs with the tow hitch.

The turbocharged engine under the hood of the Ford Explorer is the most powerful one here and hence is the quickest of the lot. It also has the highest towing capacity to offer. Both the Highlander and the Telluride are equally quick which is on par with the Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder is priced competitively but loses out in terms of towing capacity against all its peers.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Since the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder carries forward the same V6 powertrain as the 2021 model, we expect similar EPA fuel economy ratings. It is rated for 21 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined as per the EPA.

Opting for the 4WD brings down the fuel economy ratings only by a small margin. It is rated for 20/15/22 MPG in the city/highway/combined driving conditions. The 18.5-gallon fuel tank offers a decent driving range of over 400 miles, no matter the drivetrain choice.

Interior
8.0/10

"The Pathfinder does a good job of hauling people and cargo in relative comfort and Nissan has given a lot of tech and driver-aids too." - Edmunds

The interior of the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has seen massive improvements as compared to the outgoing model. Compared with its predecessor, the new Pathfinder's dashboard looks far more attractive, and its tech offerings are finally up to class standards. The cabin feels more premium and the overall design is more modern than the truck-like designs of the past.

The base S trim does not get the power front seats but gets recline function for both the second and third-row seats with cloth upholstery. Upgrade to the SV trim and you get the heated front seats with a power driver seat and a leather steering wheel. A three-zone climate control system is also standard across the trim ladder.

The SL trim gets both power front seats along with a heated steering wheel and leather upholstery. The Platinum trim adds ventilation function for the front seats and heated rear seat. A wireless charging pad is also standard while the garage door transmitter is available from SL trim onwards

Opt for the regular middle-row bench and seating jumps back to a total of eight passengers. Interior quietness has been greatly improved, with acoustic laminated front glass, thicker 2nd-row glass, increased door, and floor isolation, and a 60 percent increase in engine noise absorption. The 16.6 cu-ft of trunk space is just on par with the segment standards but folding down both the rear seats can open up a maximum of 80.5 cu-ft.

The Highlander has cabin space similar to that of the Pathfinder both in terms of passenger and cargo space. The Telluride offers the largest cargo capacity in this comparison while the Explorer with its longer wheelbase opens up the most amount of legroom and a larger trunk than the Pathfinder.

Nissan offers an 8-inch infotainment screen as standard which is bumped to a 9-inch head unit on higher trims.

The standard infotainment system is an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, there's also a 12.3-inch driver digital instrument screen as an option. The larger infotainment screen can be had with wireless Apple CarPlay capability and a wireless smartphone charging pad as well. Satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, and an in-dash navigation system are also standard on the new 2022 Pathfinder.

The standard 6-speaker audio system is also upgraded to a 13-speaker Bose audio system with dual subwoofers on the top Platinum trim.

Exterior
5.0/10

"The new exterior design of the 2022 Pathfinder is bolder and more rugged-looking, but with an universal appeal." - Carbuzz

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder takes a monumental leap in terms of exterior design. The 2022 Pathfinder is all-new from the ground up. Every inch of the vehicle was carefully designed to convey a sense of strength and capability with a strong front face, wide stance, blister fenders, and a shorter front overhang. The Pathfinder also features Trailer Sway Control that aids its 6,000 lbs towing ability.

As standard, the Pathfinder is offered with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard which are upgraded to 20-inch machine-finish alloy wheels on the top Platinum trim. They add more gravitas and grandeur to the SUV. The LED headlights and tail lights are also standard across the lineup.

Distinctive Nissan signature features are integrated into the new Pathfinder design, such as the V-motion grille with a three-slot grille incorporated as a homage to the original Pathfinder. The Motion-activated Liftgate allows for easier access to the Cargo area of this SUV. The 2022 Pathfinder is available in 6 standard color options with two premium color options for $395. Opting for a two-tone paint scheme costs $350 additionally, while the Scarlet Ember Tintcoat and Pearl White Tricoat paint cost $745 for the dual-tone color scheme.

In terms of dimensions, the Ford Explorer is the largest SUV here with class-leading ground clearance and wheelbase. The longer wheelbase opens up more interior space for the Explorer, as compared to the Pathfinder.

The Telluride and Explorer look the most impressive on the streets while the new Pathfinder has an aggressive design language that will find takers in many. The Toyota Highlander has a softer exterior design but is the least impressive amongst the SUVs present here.

Safety
9.6/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder gets 'Good' ratings in almost all the aspects of the test from the IIHS. While the NHTSA is yet to test the SUV, we expect it to perform equally well once it goes under the hammer, considering the fact that it received a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA for the 2020 model year.

Every 2022 Pathfinder comes equipped with Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, and Rear Automatic Braking. Also standard are plenty other features that are listed below:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front and rear collision mitigation system
  • ProPilot assist with Navilink
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Blind-spot monitor and driver monitor alert
  • Around View Monitor w/aerial-view system
  • Front and Rear SONAR system

Competition

2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2022 Ford Explorer

The turbocharged Ecoboost engine under the hood of the Explorer makes it the most powerful SUV in the segment. At an MSRP of $34,540, the Explorer is far quicker and more frugal than the Pathfinder. It also has a higher towing capacity as standard and the longer wheelbase offers more legroom inside its cabin and a larger trunk. Therefore, the Explorer makes for a stronger choice in almost all aspects against the Pathfinder.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2022 Kia Telluride

While the Telluride is marginally more powerful than the Pathfinder but the Telluride is quicker off the mark. The Telluride offers higher towing capacity and similar fuel economy figures. That said, the more spacious cabin, larger trunk, and feature-loaded nature of the Telluride at an affordable price tag make more sense between the two, especially with the superior 10-year warranty program.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2022 Toyota Highlander

The Highlander is pricier than the Pathfinder and has similar acceleration performance as well. The Highlander has a higher towing capacity and is also more frugal. Both also offer a similarly sized cabin and trunk space. Even though the Highlander is more reliable, the new Pathfinder is expected to be on par with the segment standard. Therefore, the 2022 Pathfinder is the one to go for between the two.
