The 2022 Subaru WRX Sedan is now based on an all-new platform but with this, the line-up remains the same as far as the features are concerned. The 2022 WRX though is on sale in four configurations now which includes the all-new GT trim at the top of the trim ladder. Now, there is also the WRX STI trim will be covered separately once its launched.

The prices aren’t released by Subaru yet but expect a healthy hike due to the changes made this year. As standard, expect the WRX to get dual-zone climate control, sports front seats & sports steering wheel with the new vertically-oriented large touchscreen infotainment system. The Premium trim adds more convenience features along with the larger wheels. 

The Limited trim adds more technology and leather upholstery while the new top-end GT trim features an adaptive suspension setup, drive modes selector, Recaro performance seats, and a premium audio system. Options and packages are to be announced yet as well, and while AWD is standard, the CVT transmission can be had for an additional sum of $1,900. 

With the new engine, the 2022 Subaru WRX Limited trim offers the best balance with plenty of creature comforts and a decent price tag. Apart from this, the Limited trim can also be equipped with an optional package that adds in features like a Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, reverse automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2022 WRX is based on Subaru's Global Platform. That means it shares some commonality with the current-generation Impreza sedan as well as the Crosstrek and Outback. - Edmunds

The Subaru WRX was always known for its distinctive growl of the Flat-4 cylinder engine. Now, the 2022 Subaru WRX takes that performance to a whole new level with the latest interaction of a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer-4 engine that now produces 3 hp more than the 2021 WRX's 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque on offer. As for the super-sport 2022 WRX STI, it is expected to produce close to 400 bhp of power and above 300 lb-ft of torque with the help of a downsized 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine.

Irrespective of the trim option, the Subaru WRX is expected to continue with a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT transmission option, with a standard AWD drivetrain. The distinctive Boxer engine sound, the relatively lower center of gravity than before, and a new engine is expected to invoke pure driving pleasure amongst owners and enthusiasts globally.

It does 0-60 MPH in 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 145 MPH, while covering the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds. 

The WRX 2022 is undoubtedly one of the most powerful sedans in the segment and yet comes at a competitive price. The Elantra N has more power and torque which makes it far quicker in the quarter-mile drag run. That said, it is also considerably more expensive. The Civic lacks the grunt but is more affordable while the Jetta GLI also seems a bit pricier for the segment.

The high-performing turbocharged 4-cylinder Boxer engine makes the 2022 Subaru WRX one of the most pocket-heavy cars when it comes to fuel efficiency. With an EPA rating of 19 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined, it clearly doesn’t earn any bonus points with its EPA figures. Even with the larger 15.9-gallon fuel tank on offer, it still barely manages to offer 400 miles of range on the highways.

While the competitors offer AWD optionally, they return much better fuel economy figures as compared to the new WRX 2022. The Hyundai Elantra N is the least impressive of the lot, while the Honda and Volkswagen engines are the most frugal of the lot. With a decent-sized gas tank capacity, the Jetta GLI offers the most impressive range here.

The interior and cabin space of the 2022 Subaru WRX are expected to have any drastic improvements in terms of interior design aesthetics. Even, better quality interior fit and finish are expected out of the 2022 model along with better insulation and sound-deadening materials. Moreover, with a new platform on which the Subaru 2022 WRX will be based, we can expect a bigger cabin space overall. 

Just like the previous generations, the 2022 WRX wouldn’t be compromising with the quality of the interior, which carries over from the previous generation like the supportive and comfortable seats along with the optional Recaro seats and the excellent outward visibility of the car. While the front row seats are quite spacious, the rear seat has limited legroom and the 12 cu-ft of trunk space isn't the best in the business either. 

The Hyundai Elantra N has the most spacious cabin here while the Civic Si is marginally behind in that comparison. In terms of trunk space, the Imprezza WRX lags the end of the pack while the other three have a very similar trunk capacity that is a bit larger than the Subaru. 

The massive infotainment screen at the center of the dashboard is what makes the WRX feel sophisticated. 

The 1.6-inch touchscreen system is one of the largest units available in the segment today. Along with the touch, there are physical knobs and switches for ease of use, while there is also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility offered as standard. There's also an 11-speaker Harman/Kardon premium audio system on offer for audiophiles.

The 2022 Subaru WRX takes exterior design cues from the new Levorg. The new-generation 2022 WRX, on the exterior design front, will not be that far-fetched from the previous iterations of the WRX. The Subaru WRX will get a new bigger grille, along with a set of new headlights and taillights that look distinctive and stylish. The camouflaged look showcased a larger hood scoop apart from the new fenders which is also the case with the production unit. 

The 2022 WRX might come across as a little bit polarizing for some people with its flamboyant and extravagant exterior design. But, one must respect the Subaru for being what it is. Opting for the 2022 WRX STI will also get you bulging fenders apart from the sporty rear spoiler. The available color schemes and options packages with their prices aren't disclosed yet while the 4.9-inch ground clearance should continue similarly for this year as well. 

Clearly, the Subaru WRX is definitely the heaviest amongst most of its competitors and also the smallest. But, surprisingly the interior of the Subaru WRX does seem to have the kind of outright cabin-space it is supposed to have. The VW Jetta GLI is the largest in terms of dimensions while both the Civic Si and the Elantra N lie in between, with all three offering better ground clearances as well. 

On the streets, the 2022 WRX looks the most dominating while the Elantra N is the one that looks more modern and sophisticated.

The 2021 Subaru WRX has got 5 on 5 stars in the latest safety crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. Now knowing a platform change is being made on the 2022 WRX, it should remain similar to the 2021 Subaru WRX, offering the SUBARU STARLINK feature as a standard safety fixture across the lineup. The 2022 WRX could get an even wider array of active and passive safety features on offer.

While the 2022 WRX is far quicker off the mark, the Civic Si is much more fuel-efficient. Honda also offers more passenger and trunk space along with a more premium cabin and a lot more features, making it the preferred choice. 

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Hyundai Elantra N

The Elantra N has a more powerful engine and is much more expensive as well over the WRX but it is only one-tenth of a second quicker. That said, the Hyundai is more frugal and has a more spacious cabin than the Subaru. Hyundai also offers more technology and safety feature and the impressive warranty program tilts the scales completely to its side. 

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

While the Jetta GLI is not as powerful as the 2022 WRX, it is only half a second slower. The VW is the pricier of the two, but it is almost 50% percent more efficient and has a more spacious cabin to offer. There are more safety features and technology available as standard but it isn't as fun to drive as the WRX, which is why prefer the Subaru between the two.

The release date for the 2022 Subaru WRX was set for sometime around late 2021, but it is yet to hit the showrooms. While it is not a perfect all-rounder, it is definitely quite a capable automobile but there is are better alternatives at a similar price point. Nevertheless, in case you like the exterior appeal of the new Subaru WRX for the 2022 model year and want to experience the many joys of a Boxer engine along with the standard AWD drivetrain.
