The Veloster is Hyundai’s attempt at capturing a market that had been growing significantly. The Veloster is the newest car in the Hyundai lineup and brings in that element of rejuvenation that the brand had been looking for.
Hatchbacks have long been known for that extra bit of designing refinement, interior space, and cargo capacity. The Veloster is Hyundai’s attempt at capturing a market that had been growing significantly. The Veloster is the newest car in the Hyundai lineup and brings in that element of rejuvenation that the brand had been looking for. But being the latest inclusion doesn’t translate into the car being a faultless hatchback. The Veloster feels riddled with problems that Hyundai would have to work on to make it a viable option against the likes of the Volvo C30 and Volkswagen Beetle.
The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is available as a single trim with both manual and automatic transmissions. The manual transmission is priced at $17,300 while the automatic transmission is priced at $18,550. However, the car is available with three different interior options; a red, black, and gray interior.

We Recommend
The Hyundai Veloster is available as a single trim and that is our only recommendation. It comes standard with features like cruise control, keyless entry, and heated mirrors. We suggest buying a manual transmission that provides better fuel efficiency.
The engine on duty on the Hyundai Veloster is a 1.6L inline-4 engine that is capable of producing 138hp of power @ 6300 rpm and 123lb.-ft of torque @4850rpm. It is capable of racing to the 60 MPH mark in 8.5 seconds. In the quarter-mile run, the Veloster clocks a time of 16.7 seconds at a speed of 84 miles per hour.
While the performance figures may seem fair for a car in its segment, the Veloster is actually sluggish in acceleration. It manages a top speed of 118 MPH, which is again low as per segment standards.

In comparison, the Volkswagen manages similar quarter-mile timings clocking 16.7 seconds, even though it lags 0.2 seconds behind in the acceleration test with a total time of 8.8 seconds. While the performance figures for the Volvo C30 are not known, its 2.5L I05 engine produces maximum torque and power at 236lb.-ft and 227hp, respectively. All three cars use a manual transmission with the only exception that the Beetle uses a 5-speed-manual as compared to the Hyundai’s and Volvo’s 6-speed-manual transmission.
Perhaps, the Veloster’s fuel efficiency is the ace card that Hyundai has up its sleeve. The hatchback manages to trump other competitors in the market by considerable margins, clocking a mileage of 27 MPG in the city and 37 MPG when driven on the highway. Combined, the Veloster manages 31 miles per gallon of fuel. Its fuel tank of 13.2 gallons capacity might be the smallest in the segment, but the Veloster manages impeccable range both on the highway and in the city covering a total distance of 488.4 and 356.4 miles respectively.

In comparison, the Beetle and C30 manage a combined mileage of 25 and 24 miles per gallon of fuel only. The C30 has the largest fuel tank at 15.9 gallons, followed by the Volkswagen Beetle at 14.5 gallons. Despite larger tank sizes, the C30 and Beetle manage lower range both in the city and on the highway because of lower fuel efficiencies.
The distinctiveness in the Veloster’s design is limited to its exterior, on the inside, the hatchback is true to Hyundai’s cabin design. Behind the steering wheel is a small information cluster surrounded by the speedometer and the tachometer. The entertainment unit sits centrally and adds a lot of character to the entire cabin. The Hyundai Veloster can seat 4 passengers only. While front seats accord a lot of comfort and space, the rear seats remain rather constrained in terms of head-room, credits to the attenuating roofline.
All in all, while the luxury is supreme, the comfort feels compromised, but something that helps to make a favorable case is that the cabin feels quiet with no outside noise. However, the steering is synthetic and lags in response. The Hyundai Veloster has a total head-, shoulder- and legroom of 39/55.6/43.9 and 35.3/54/31.7 inches at the front and rear, respectively. It has a total cargo capacity of 15.5 cubic feet.

The Volkswagen Beetle has almost similar cargo capacity at 15.4 cubic feet, while the Volvo C30 has the lowest space at 12.9 cubic feet. All cars have a seating capacity of four passengers, which is the segment standard. In terms of overall space, all cars have similar amounts of space, and it is difficult to declare a certain winner. Some salient interior features include:
The infotainment system on the Hyundai Veloster, like any other car from the brand, is easy and natural in its usage. The extensive list of features that the Veloster boasts of include standard Bluetooth connectivity, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and a Blue Link platform. The Blue Link platform has loads of functionalities, one of which is enhanced roadside assistance. An optional package also adds a navigation system. The display quality of the touchscreen is precise and crystal clear. Other salient features include:
Idiosyncrasy is one word that appropriately defines the Hyundai Veloster’s design attributes. It looks like a coupe-hatchback, where the roofline tapers excessively. Upfront, the Hyundai Veloster looks rather sporty with an imposing grille, athletic and chiseled bonnet, and a set of headlights that add subtlety to the aggressive design.
At the rear, it is the way in which the roof is designed that garners all attention. However, as much as one can love the design, it feels rather impractical. The hunkered down bonnet feels advantageous from a visibility perspective, but the viewing angles at the rear are rather farcical. Statistically, the Veloster has a total length, width, and height of 166.1, 70.5, and 55.1 inches, respectively. Despite its total ground clearance of 5.6 inches, the ride quality can be harsh. The wheelbase is the longest in the at 104.3 inches

In comparison, the Volkswagen Beetle is the heaviest car in the segment at 3,200 lbs. The Volvo C30 is the longest, widest, and tallest car in the segment at 168.4, 71.2, and 58.5 inches. Despite its overall length, the Volvo has the shortest wheelbase at 99.9 inches. The Beetle’s wheelbase is 103.9 inches long, while its ground clearance is not known, the C30 has a ground clearance of 5.7 inches. Major exterior features include-
While there are many areas where the Veloster loses its competitive edge, its safety features and ratings are top-grade, and there is no doubting the reliability and dependability of this hatchback. As standard, the Hyundai Veloster gets daytime running lights, child seat anchors, and stability control. The hatchback receives an overall “good” rating in the IIHS crash tests. Some salient safety features include:
The Hyundai Veloster may not be top-notch, but it is definitely praiseworthy. It excels in fuel efficiency and cargo capacity, but this where its advantage over the competitors starts to fade. It is sluggish in acceleration and has very little headroom for the rear seat passengers. The ride quality feels subpar because of unresponsive steering and is something that might irk buyers in the segment. If you’re looking for a car only for its looks, the Hyundai Veloster is your go-to car. However, we would look elsewhere for that refined ride quality.
