Overall Rating
The Veloster is powered by a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 147 hp and an optional 1.6 liter turbocharged which puts out 201 hp. Both powertrains are mated to a six-speed manual while a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional.
First introduced in 2011, the Hyundai Veloster received a complete overhaul in the year 2019. The unusual three-door design continues to be its unique design element to save weight and keep dimensions in check. Handling and performance have improved, thanks to its multi-link suspension and turbocharged engine.
The 2019 Hyundai Veloster starts at $18,500 and offers several benefits a compact hatchback has to offer, along with darty dynamics and a lively engine to play with. In this review of the 2019 Hyundai Veloster, we'll delve deeper into the subtler aspects of the Korean hatchback, and how much relevance it actually holds in the American market.Â

The Veloster produces the highest number of horses with its little 1.6-liter engine and the Civic sport takes the second spot followed by Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Cruze. Interestingly, the 2019 Ford Fiesta ST offers the most torque, with the Hyundai Veloster and the Chevrolet Cruze following closely.
The response from the turbocharged engine is energetic and it only takes 6 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. The curb weight is also very low ranging from 2,701 pounds and rises to only 2,987 lb on Turbo Ultimate.

The Veloster is a clear winner here and no car can match its acceleration as its engine puts the highest amount of horsepower.
The turbo engine of the Veloster is athletic and fun to drive with the manual transmission but the automatic transmission is sluggish in downshifts. The audio system amplifies a synthetic engine noise which can be toggled down from pop-and-crackle to mellow and sweet. The 2019 Veloster rides sharp with a stiffer body and independent multi-link setup, replacing the outgoing torsion beam unit in the rear. The front gets a lighter, rigid independent suspension that uses MacPherson struts. Ride quality has improved and it soaks up bumps and undulations very well.
Column-mounted electric rack-and-pinion power steering is tuned to deliver a decent feel and weight. The chassis works well and there is minimal body roll on corners. The steering isn't quick and dead off-center but it is fine.
The Veloster is equipped with disc brakes in the front and rear, plus ABS. It will come standard with 13.0-inch front and 11.8-inch rear brakes, while upsized 13.6- and 12.4-inch units will be optional. The traction control uses wheel-speed sensors coupled with ESC algorithms to apply precise braking force to the inside front wheel during spirited cornering.

The Veloster scores the shortest stopping distance and the Civic takes the second spot followed by Corolla and Cruze hatchback.
The Veloster uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that uses Atkinson-Cycle for high efficiency and lower emissions. Fuel economy estimates range up to 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 MPG on highways, depending on engine configuration. The 2019 Hyundai Veloster does show an incredible amount of promise in terms of fuel economy and offers quite the competition to its rivals.

The Honda Civic is the most fuel-efficient here with 33 mpg combined. The Veloster bags the last spot because of its higher power output. The Chevrolet Cruze and Corolla are delivering similar numbers.
The 2019 Hyundai Veloster's interior has been inspired by the Kona, but has risen to new levels of quality. Like the exterior, the asymmetrical design inside the Veloster is driver-focused. A contrasting color scheme separates the Turbo variant from other trims. While the overall feel is fairly plain, the cabin feels extremely cozy and nice to be in. Quality of materials is very high, and the Hatchback feels quite premium for the price you pay to get your hands on one.Â
The front seats are quite comfortable and there is a clear division between the driver's and passenger's sides of the front cabin. The second row is tight in legroom and headroom for an average adult. Getting in and out of the Veloster is a chore because of the two-plus-one configuration. We absolutely love the steering wheel, which offers a firm feel and inspires confidence in the driver.Â

The Veloster being smaller in dimensions have a spacious cabin just like other rivals. The Civic has the most spacious cabin followed by Corolla and Cruze. While almost all cars in the lot offer to seat up to 5 occupants, Hyundai recommends seating 4 people in the Veloster.Â
The Hyundai Veloster offers sophisticated technologies paired with an intuitive infotainment system to keep passengers informed and entertained. There's a brilliant 8-inch infotainment screen on offer, which features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hyundai also offers an incredible 8-speaker sound system with the Veloster, which also comes with a subwoofer to truly enhance your music experience.
You can stream music via Bluetooth Audio Streaming, or just plug in your MP3 player. There's also USB and Aux support for added flexibility. We love the fact that Hyundai offers a Wireless Charging Pad with the Premium trim, which keeps your phone charged up during long trips. All in all, we're pretty impressed with what the 2019 Hyundai Veloster has to offer in the infotainment space. The following is a list of Infotainment aids offered with the 2019 model year"
The new Veloster also offers generous rear cargo capacity, with 19.9 cubic feet of interior volume behind the 2nd-row seat. This can also be increased with the 60/40 rear folding seats to accommodate more cargo.

The Veloster offers similar space to the Corolla and Civic and there is not much difference. The Fiesta, however, disappoints with its 10.1-cubic inch cargo space. Interestingly enough, the 2019 Subaru Impreza Hatchback has the most cargo room to offer, and clearly dominates the competition in this department.Â
The 2019 Hyundai Veloster retains a unique two-plus-one door configuration that seats four people. It merges the design appeal of a sports coupe with a handy third door for easier rear-seat access. The LED headlights with the daytime running lights flank an aggressive cascading grille. Functional air splitters add to the visual appeal of the Veloster with a low stance.
The sharp character lines accentuate body sides for an athletic look with a beetle-like roofline, rounding towards the rear fascia. The back end houses a short back window and squinty LED tail lights. Veloster's centered twin tailpipes under the bumper look pleasant and impart a sporty feel. A contrasting roof is available for the Turbo model as well.

With a 104.3-inch wheelbase and a 166.9-inches overall length, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster is only fractionally larger than the first-generation model. All of the rivals are ahead in terms of dimensions which accounts for more interior space.
The Hyundai Veloster is not yet tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it comes loaded with advanced safety features that make your driving safer. The Veloster's stiff platform helps in absorbing impacts and keeping you secure. There's also an abundance of airbags to cushion shocks during a collision. Additionally, Hyundai fits the Veloster with several electronic aids to help prevent mishaps. The following is a list of safety features offered with the 2019 Hyundai Veloster.
Powered by a dreary inline-four that produces 136 hp, the 2019 Toyota Corolla will please those who prefer safety over performance. Mated to a clunky CVT or an energetic 6-speed manual and the Corolla's fuel economy lags behind its rivals. The interior is rather roomy but feels cheap. Overall, there's not much about the 2019 Toyota Corolla that impresses but as an everyday appliance, it's hard to fault this little car. The Veloster is way ahead in terms of overall performance and driving dynamics. Go for Veloster if you want the fun to drive a car and if reliability is your concern then choose the Corolla.
The Honda Civic comes available in a wide variety of body styles. It offers great fuel efficiency and best-in-class driving dynamics. It has one of the nicest interiors in the class, a good amount of cargo space, and plenty of tech features. The Veloster is good, but the Civic is a bit better - and it costs about the same. Go with the Honda.
Chevrolet Cruze is a pretty good car in terms of safety and reliability. It has decent handling with a fair amount of engine power. The Veloster is way ahead in terms of overall performance. Cruze is priced way lower than the Veloster. The cabin is much impressive in Veloster and the Cruze doesn't have enough reasons to sway you away from the compelling Hyundai.
The Hyundai Veloster is a terrific car if you are ready to live with a silly door layout. On a serious note, the Veloster's performance is exciting, with the hatchback offering incredible driving dynamics and a punchy turbocharged engine. The Veloster is stylish and satisfying to drive when compared to the rivals. This hatchback features plenty of interior space and a user-friendly infotainment system. We simply can't complain about the interior either, which features great materials and a driver-focused layout. Fuel economy and cargo space are great too, and the Veloster offers a pleasant amount of interior practicality. With excellent safety features and reassuring Korean reliability, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster stands as a complete package of performance, safety and practicality.
