Overall Rating
For the 2014 model year, the Challenger coupe is unchanged and carries a starting price tag of $27,490 for the base V6 variant and goes against the other two true American pony cars, the Chevy Camaro and the Ford Mustang.
Dodge Challenger gloats of a rare fusion experience of the raw brute power of a pony car and the subtlety of a coupe in one form. There is ample power available at the touch of the pedal to be taken to a track day, and there is enough space on the inside for both passengers and luggage to be used as a daily driver. For the 2014 model year, the Challenger coupe is unchanged and carries a starting price tag of $27,490 for the base V6 variant and goes against the other two true American pony cars, the Chevy Camaro and the Ford Mustang.
Although the R/T variant too lacks the bells and whistles in terms of comfort and technology, just a few thousand dollars over the base, you get a much more potent and capable V8 engine alongside quite a few additional features that sweeten the deal overall. Even though there is a lack of comfort creatures in R/T trim, still, the trim brings the best value for money.

The 2014 Dodge Challenger is available in four trims with only the base SXT variant being powered by the V6 engine, as the other three trims get a V8 with different configurations. The R/T trim onwards features a limited-slip differential at the rear, whereas there is cylinder deactivation available for the most powerful SRT8 Core and SRT8 trims. Most of the modern creature comfort features are available only on the top-spec SRT8 trim, and that’s a bummer, as many rivals offer them at a much lower price.

The Challenger is powered by three engines, a V6, and two V8 engines. The higher trims get either of the two V8s, a 5.7-liter which is good for 375 hp, and a 6.4L which produces a maximum of 470 hp. The base SXT variant is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels only via a 5-speed automatic transmission.
The performance is underwhelming considering the engine output and 6.4 seconds taken to achieve 60 mph from standstill is a testament to that. The slow-ish 14.8-second quarter-mile run is thanks to the aging 5-speed automatic gearbox, which is slow to respond and takes its own time to shift under heavy acceleration but performs extremely well under normal conditions.

The 2014 Ford Mustang is the most affordable offering in this lineup, and despite having lower power output than the Camaro, the marginally higher torque helps it be the fastest in the acceleration tests. The Camaro with its higher power output is right at its tail, whereas the Dodge Challenger, led down by its gearbox, is placed last and is also the most expensive car here.
Owning a pony car comes along with fuel bills, and that is evident by its fuel efficiency figures. Yet, the V6 engine isn’t that thirsty as the larger V8 engines and is rated for 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while the overall combined fuel efficiency is rated by the EPA at 21 mpg. The low fuel efficiency is compensated by a large 19.5-gallon gas tank, which helps on long-distance touring as it can be driven for over 500 miles on a single tank of gas.

It is the Mustang that excels in the frugality section as it has the most efficient engine amongst the pony cars present here. The small fuel tank does affect its driving range but the Camaro with the larger fuel tank and lower fuel economy travels only marginally further. The Challenger has the best driving range and that too by a considerable margin despite having higher fuel consumption than the Mustang.
Unlike the bold and aggressive exteriors of the Challenger, the interior is pretty anticlimactic. Apart from the gear shifter knob and the large dashboard that might remind you of the Challengers of the past, there is nothing much to attract attention about. The seats too aren’t that great as the front seats, although wide, are pretty flat and do not offer lateral support.
The SRT8’s seats offer better side bolstering which also gets the more premium leather upholstery. Although, when cruising out on the highway, these seats are well cushioned to be comfortable for long journeys, and there is ample headroom and legroom even at the back, in spite of the coupe body style.

The Challenger is the most spacious of the lot as it not only offers more headroom, but at the rear, the seats are manageable for an average American adult, the Mustang and the Camaro on the other hand are pretty compact. The Challenger also has a huge 16.2 cu-ft of trunk space, which is way beyond what Ford and Chevy have to offer. Few major interior features include-
The 2014 Dodge Challenger coupe does not get the larger, much better, and intuitive 8.4-inch touchscreen system and continues to be offered the aging infotainment system which is pretty rudimentary and is crude to use, to say the least.
There aren’t many features as well, and it is one aspect that feels in desperate need of a replacement. The 6-speaker audio system is decent and the Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio are a welcome inclusion. Major infotainment features are-
The 2014 Dodge Challenger is distinctive from any angle and any automotive enthusiast can identify it just from its silhouette. The flat hood, round quad headlamps which are recessed inside, the shoulder line that rises up from the B-pillar, and the large rims, all make it look the part of being a mean machine.
It is a long car that offers a bit of practicality with its 5.2-inch of ground clearance.

The Challenger is the largest car here in terms of length, width, height, and wheelbase as well. Both the Camaro and the Mustang are smaller and hence are lighter as well. The Mustang and Challenger offer similar ground clearance but the Chevy Camaro lacks in that aspect. Major exterior features available with the coupe are-
Since there aren’t many safety features and driver assistance aids on offer and the lack of crash test reports from the IIHS, one might wonder if it would be a safe bet to buy one. But the 2014 Dodge Challenger scores a perfect 5-star overall rating in NHTSA testings, and there are few handy safety features along with a host of airbags all around the cabin to provide for a safe haven no matter if you are on the road or on track. Few important safety highlights include-
The 2014 Dodge Challenger is a versatile coupe that can go up against midsize sedans as well in terms of interior space and trunk capacity. The base V6 engine is outperformed by the rival pony cars but decent fuel economy and cruising abilities give it some much-needed advantage. If the outdated interiors and the aging infotainment system isn’t the point of worry for you and space is of utmost importance, the Challenger is the way to go for you.
